X-P3 BioShield
Our technology enabled, cost-effective face shield is designed to protect the wearer’s face and mucus membrane area from infectious, biohazardous, or pathological COVID-19 aerosols by creating a protective Dynamic Ingress Barrier (DIB). This DIB blocks and transports aerosols away from the often breached and problematic periphery of mask/respirator protective zones. Additionally, this new PPE tech is designed to enhance air particle's flocculant properties by disrupting the structural integrity of the coronavirus electrostatic double layer and reduce its electrokinetic potential before accelerating it back into the airspace. Thereby increasing exiting air flocculation with active viral aerosols, and subsequent settlement out of the airspace for cleaning, or capture via a filter. Most importantly, this AI enabled PPE technology facilitates contact tracing which will prove to significantly reduce global COVID-19 R (0) and preserve life by minimizing a specific mode of transmission and addressing the OSHA Hierarchy of Controls on multiple levels:

While the X-P3 BioShield is designed to effectively combat COVID-19 transmission through protection, prevention, and prediction, the challenge area where it will make the biggest impact is in strengthening disease surveillance and predictive systems which thwart disease outbreaks.
Unfortunately, disparate impacts have been unleashed upon the world's most vulnerable LMIC, elderly and ethnic communities. Especially in the following countries:

Key virulence drivers coalesce around efficacy, application and predictability:
- Geospatial Predictive Heat-Mapping - Lack of AI/ML/RWD driven prediction models which empower public health stakeholders to make preemptive, data-riven resource allocations to stymie outbreaks. (Khakharia, 2020).
- Surgical Masks - University of Edinburgh determined that most surgical masks aren't certified effective against infectious aerosols. Other studies show as much as 20% of aerosols leak into mask's breath space.
- N95 Respirators - The COVID-19 crisis has proven that supplies are limited, and can be ineffective in preventing polydispersed aerosol transmission. (TAOH, 2013)
- Face Shields [existing] - Utilized by millions in medicine and industry, but unfortunately: “Due to the lack of a good facial seal peripherally that can allow for aerosol penetration, face shields shouldn't be used as solitary face/eye protection, but rather as adjunctive to other PPE. ” (Dr. R. Roberge NIOSH, CDC)
Through the use of integral or external micro-blowers, our technology facilitates the creation of a protective Dynamic Ingress Air Barrier to prevent fine particles and bioaerosols from crossing the face shield plane and transport them away from the often breached periphery of mask/respirator protective zones. Integral to this process, the novel design enhances a viral particle's flocculant properties by disrupting the structural integrity of its electrostatic double layer before accelerating it into the airspace, form heavier colloids, and subsequently settle out of the airspace for cleaning, or capture via a filter. If coupled with face masks, this novel design increases mask effectiveness by eliminating its primary failure mode of fine particle entry about its periphery due to innate porosity, improper donning, or ill-fittingness.

A temperature sensing adaptive padding with digital display provides visual indication of wearers body temperature for facility entry screening. This body temperature variable is part of a dataset which includes GIS/GPS, building zonal air exchange rates, zonal Temp & Humidity, and local climate data. The removable electroceutical filter can be routinely tested for virus presence to facilitate AI algorithm development for outbreak GIS predictability.

Technologies Utilized: UV, Electroceuticals, Biotechnology, AI/Data Analytics, Colloidal Science, Biomimetics
As noted in the challenge synopsis, with well over 110 million confirmed cases and nearly 2 million deaths, COVID-19 has tragically devastated the world. Unfortunately, global LMIC's and historically marginalized citizens along the lines of race, ethnicity, age, gender, and income have borne the brunt of the disparate impacts.
Equally as problematic, due to environmental racism and disparate impact, COVID-19 is poised to be a double edged sword for under privileged communities. After prolonged viral devastation, then making minor strides in suppressing the spread of COVID-19 within these communities via social distancing and disposable masks, LMIC communities are now facing another grim reality. Recent reports indicate that of 1.5 billion disposable masks have entered our oceans. Due to the fact that many landfills are located directly within underprivileged communities, these used masks will ultimately end up as contaminated pollutants at their doorsteps of LMIC citizens. By utilizing our washable, reusable face shield technology, not only will more lives be saved but it will help prevent disparate ancillary environmental justice impacts as well.
Contrary to popular belief, the preservation of the citizenry’s health and restarting the world economy no longer has to be viewed as mutually exclusive concepts. Our primary focus is to reduce the disparate COVID-19 related impacts on the LMIC, Elderly, and Ethnic communities. Our secondary market focus is front-line Health Care, Education, and Critical Industries (i.e. Meat Processing and Airline).
Due to the products muti-functionality and AI adaptability, licensing can open channels in the following areas of commercialization and rapid uptake :
- Public Health Organizations (Data Driven, Informed Planning via Predictive algorithms)
- Building Managers (Virus attenuating building controls via Big-Data Analytics)
- Personal Protective Equipment Industries (Face Shield)

In as much, for the public good, we intend to work with public-private partners to provide flexible no-to-low cost licensing for manufacturing and distribution to the most disparately affected populations (LMIC, ethnic, and Elderly). Globally, we'll pursue working with the WHO to get this technology to the countries in most need at-cost.
For the past year, we've monitored national and global incident rates, demographic trends, and secondary impacts. We've also stayed abreast with the latest research on best practices and interventions to improve our design efficacy.
- Strengthen disease surveillance, early warning predictive systems, and other data systems to detect, slow, or halt future disease outbreaks.
While our solution has varying degrees of alignment with multiple challenge areas, as the useful data-set grows it will ultimately be most directly aligned with facilitating preemptive, data driven planning and disease surveillance, early warning predictive systems, and other data systems to detect, slow, or halt future disease outbreaks.
As the data-set matures further, and becomes even more robust and usable for machine-learning, predictive analytics and modeling, it's value and effectiveness will be harnessed on national/global scale. This will allow governmental, public health, and healthcare workers to better coordinate evidence-based rapid response plans to preserve health, social, and economic impacts.

The innovation's scientific crux is Biomimetics with an undergirding of particle physics, colloidal chemistry, and fluid dynamics among others. Biomimetics has sparked many useful innovations through the imitation of models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems.
Biomimetic Design Inspiration:
- Ingress Barrier - Straits of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean sea meets the Atlantic. A hydrologic flow current barrier prevents ingress and mixing of these waters as its impermeability is paramount to the continued existence of differentiated alien species and sea-life in each.
- Particle Transport & Ventilation Effectiveness - Anemophilous pollination of various flora types. Crosswind speeds with sufficient particle entrainment velocities efficiently transport fecundation pollen of aerodynamic size ranges similar to coronavirus colloids (5 micrometers).
- Virus inactivation/disinfection - Natural anti-viral and antimicrobial effects of Solar UV in mineral (earth) and aquatic systems
- Flocculation & Settlement - Lakes are often seen to have areas of green algal matter floating on their surfaces. Mimicking natural processes, dissolved air flotation (DAF) is often employed in the removal of this type of material after coagulation and flocculation (Carty, 2002)
Our design leveraged biomimicry in order to create catalytic market change and greater impact by providing:
- Dual Viral Protection System
- Droplets via Face Shield
- Aerosol via Dynamic Air Ingress Barrier (DIB)
- Redundancy in Virus Deactivation
- Ultraviolet (UV Light)
- Electroceuticals

Personally, I'm passionate about this solution as I'm a product of the target LMI-C population. Unfortunately, the city of which I grew-up, Port Arthur TX has been referred to by the EPA as "Cancer Alley" due to its disparate health/environmental impacts from industrial pollution. My team is equally as passionate as Atty Vaughn grew up in the same city, and the bulk of my advisory team is comprised of my 2 sons, 2 daughters and niece.
Due to recent events, the fabric of our country has become frayed and is tearing along seams of distrust sewn between it's citizens. Some feel that those who don't look, think, or believe exactly as they do, are liabilities to this nation. On the contrary, I believe that our heterogeneity is the elixir which makes this nation great.
Similarly, I'm confident that inclusive, diverse environments help to foster competitive and catalytic thought spaces which spark diverse thinking, nurtures innovation, and provides varied approaches to problem solving. As an African-American, in my career I've sometimes encountered misconceptions that my contribution to the diversity equation is solely a factor of color or race. Of course, one's race may be an undeniably visible biomarker of human composition. But because the Diversity & Inclusion equation is far more differential than it is linear, all variables, factors, and derivatives of who we are must be considered and included. Yes we're a nation of many races, creeds , and colors, etc - But we're also a nation with a cornucopias assortment of skill-sets, interests, education, cultural backgrounds and viewpoints. Our purposeful summation of these variables will yield our greatest national resource = Formidable heterogeneous ideation teams capable of finding novel, broad, and impactful solutions.
As such, our team is composed of African-American, Trinidadian-American, and Asian-Americans of varying genders and backgrounds. Further, for STEM capacity and pipeline building within underrepresented populations, we've engaged researchers from an excellent HBCU engineering & research university - Prairie View A&M University.
- Organizations (B2B)
Our reason for applying to solve is because it affords a single-point, multi-stakeholder engagement platform which can connect us with financial, commercial and SME resources we wouldn't have had access to on our own. For instance, our solution involves a considerable amount of translational science and technology. The opportunity to engage MIT's world renowned scientific community was simply too hard to pass on.
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development, etc.)
- Business model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Financial (e.g. improving accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Legal or Regulatory Matters
- Public Relations (e.g. branding/marketing strategy, social and global media)
- Monitoring & Evaluation (e.g. collecting/using data, measuring impact)
- Product / Service Distribution (e.g. expanding client base)
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design, data analysis, etc.)
Financial: The initial round of funding required to fully develop and optimize the product/technology in the following areas: design, manufacturing and testing.
Technical: Timeliness and scientific efficiency in integrating XP-3 Bioshield data points into legacy platforms for predictive Algorithm development.
Legal: Develop strong International IP protections
Cultural: Risk-aversion oftentimes vary along lines of geography and economic status. To ensure a diverse workforce in the countries we will serve, we need to create an agile corporate framework that fosters an entrepreneurial culture and attract diverse human capital with entrepreneurial personality traits. Foundationally, the resulting framework needs to be girded by unwavering pillars of social impact & community stewardship.
Market Barriers: In addition to the relatively small amount of market education and info-messaging required to amplify our value proposition, we’ll need to port into existing distribution channels for rapid scaling and adoption.
We hope to partner with the following P3 organizations or similar :
- WHO
- CDC
- DOE
- American Medical Association,
- 3M
- Kensa
- Apple
- Nike
