Micro neural circuit transplantation-MNT
1)Problems addressed-
Focal neurological deficit post stroke , brain tumor and neurosurgical operations, quality of life in comatose patients.
2) Solution-
Microscopic neural circuit transplantation to substitute the lost neural circuit during stroke and other injuries to the brain. Plasticity will help form connections between the previously existing neural circuits and newly transplanted neural circuits. The neural circuit will function both anatomically and physiologically.
3) Materials and method-
a)Functional neuronal circuit to be harvested from cadaveric donor.
b) Stored in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (1) and transported. CSF can act medium to store and transport neural circuit as neural circuits retain their functional capacity when stored in CSF.
c)Stored neural circuit is transplanted into the recipient brain after appropriate matching is done.
4) Impact of solution
According to WHO 15 million people suffer from stroke each year. Of these 5 million people die and other 5 million are permanently disabled. Globally there are 80 million people living with experienced stroke. This is surgical modality will benefit this patients.
Problem within the challenge-
Covid-19 has been known to cause stroke in some patients. This surgical modality will help those people having stroke with paralysis or comatose patients. Patients with neurological deficits like paralysis have a increased fatality rate considered to healthy persons in any pandemic.
Scale of problem within the community-
Globally there are 80 million people living with experienced stroke . Every year 5 million people either die of stroke or are permanently disabled. MNT will improve the quality of life those disabled people and people living with neurodegenerative diseases and reduce the amounts of death due to stroke or traumatic brain injury.
Factors leading to problem-
People in both developing country and developed country are having an unhealthy lifestyle.
There are genetic factors leading to neurodegenerative diseases and aging process which leads to both stroke and neurodegenerative diseases.
Traumatic brain injury can be due to accidents.
Statistics of problem-
In 2013, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation unveiled staggering statistics based on research into the prevalence of paralysis across the U.S.
According to the study, there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis – approximately 5.4 million people. That's the same number of people as the combined populations of Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. And that number is nearly 40 percent higher than previous estimates showed.
Solution-
Microscopic neural circuit transplantation to substitute the lost neural circuit during stroke and other injuries to the brain. Plasticity will help form connections between the previously existing neural circuits and newly transplanted neural circuits. The neural circuit will function both anatomically and physiologically.
Materials and method-
a)Functional neuronal circuit to be harvested from cadaveric donor.
b) Stored in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (1) and transported. CSF can act medium to store and transport neural circuit as neural circuits retain their functional capacity when stored in CSF.
c)Stored neural circuit is transplanted into the recipient brain after appropriate matching is done.
Simple terms-
Brain is just like a solved puzzle. A solved puzzle communicates message to the reader. But if a part of puzzle goes missing it doesn't make any sense. We need to replace that part lost with another identical part so that puzzle makes sense. Missing part of the puzzle is analogous to neural circuit. That neural circuit needs to be transplanted to the brain so that circuit could transmit information like in the puzzle to carry out daily activities thus curing paralysis, coma.
Target population-
People living with paralysis and coma, neurodegenerative diseases are target population.
This target population amounts to about 80 million.
The target population has a bad quality of life. This project seeks to improve the quality of life in the target population.
Engagement-
There needs to be clinical trials on this surgical modality in which target population will participate which will improve the life of patients.
Micro neural circuit transplantation is intended to improve the quality of lives of these patients.
- Other
Covid-19 has been known to cause stroke in some patients. This surgical modality will help those people having stroke with paralysis or comatose patients. Patients with neurological deficits like paralysis and coma have a increased fatality rate considered to healthy persons in any pandemic. This will reduce the rates of mortality in future pandemics.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea.
This idea is in its preliminary stages. It's still conceptual as it needs further research to make it as perfect as possible because we are dealing with human lives.
Clinical trials must be done to have the outcome of the modality.
- A new application of an existing technology
Reasons for calling MNT innovative-
Earlier there were only a few modalities for management of patients with paralysis that included physiotherapy, stem cell therapy. This management procedures has shown to be less effective in clinical trials.
Comatose patients were only managed with ventilator support waiting for some miracle to happen.
This surgical modality MNT will be a definitive way of management for paralytic , comatose patients and neurodegenerative disease.
Reasons for being catalytic-
Earlier there were only a few modalities for management of patients with paralysis that included physiotherapy, stem cell therapy. This modalities took months to show minimal improvement in patients.
After a paralytic patients undergoes MNT (surgical modality) results can be expected in matter of days.

Current scenario-
It's still in the preliminary phase
1 yr after developing-
5-10 million people suffer stroke each year . This project will benefit them.
5 yrs after developing-
According to WHO 80 million people have experienced stroke somehow. 80 million people can be benefited.
Indicators to be measured-
1)COOP Charts;
2) Euroqol
3) Frenchay Activities Index; 4) Karnofsky Performance Status Scale
4) McMaster Health Index Questionnaire;
5) Medical Outcomes Study 20-Item Short-Form Health Survey
6) Nottingham Health Profile; 7) Quality of Life Index
8) Quality of Well-being Scale
9)the Sickness Impact Profile
Refferences-
- Not registered as any organization
4 members at present.
Our team has been dealing with paralytic comatose patients for the last few years since our team lead is a neurosurgeon. We are currently working on this patients on previously established modalities to treat them. But we have found it is not to be effective. So we have designed this project to improve the quality of life of such patients.
Diversity-
Our team has members of different races and we are also open to other races. We don't distinguish patients . Any people who will benefit from this project is essential for us irrelevant of his race colour, and gender.
Equity-
We have equity in distributing ranks in our team. We will deal with each patient who will benefit from this project as genuinely as we deal with our family members.
Inclusion statement-
We strive to create an environment in which everyone feels valued and respected. We have kept in mind the underserved people so that our project benefits everyone.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
We are applying to MIT solve because we believe in the credibility of the project. We also need a lab setup to carry out research so that this project is as safe as possible.
- Human Capital (e.g. sourcing talent, board development, etc.)
- Business model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Public Relations (e.g. branding/marketing strategy, social and global media)
We need labs as advanced as those in MIT to carry out our research plus we will be needing funds to carry out our research as we want it to be as safe as possible.
MIT faculty and solve members are the people we would like to partner with since we need a lab to carry out the research and funding too.
- Yes, I wish to apply for this prize
U. S has patients living with stroke and paralysis. According to christopher and dana reeve study U. S has stroke patients in 1in 50 people. This project is going to benefit every stroke patients.

The surplus amount of money generated from this project will go to advance the economic, financial, and political inclusion of refugees.

Stroke is not gender biased. It happens to both woman and man. So we qualify as this would improve female patients living with stroke.
