Continued education through virtual classes for young boys and girls at the refugee camps in south west Nigeria

It has been observed that most of the schools at the various refugee camps are overcrowded and congested. And because of the scourge of covid 19 and the issues of social distancing, most of these schools are no longer functioning and moreover there is scarcity of qualified teachers. This project intend to provide and train the available teachers on how to use the internet to teach students in their various homes and also to train the young boys and girls at the various camps on how to receive classes online. This will limit the problem of crowded classes and also prevent the spread of covid 19 among these displaced persons.

What specific problem are you solving?

The problem we are trying to solve is that of lack of education among the refugees, especially the females among them. In most of the camps more of the boys are found in the schools while the girls are left to do the chores. But with the introduction of these digital learning within the camps, there won't be any excuse or reasons the girls won't be allowed to be in school. This project will also boost the teaching and learning capabilities of both the teachers and the students. It will also solve the problem of illiteracy especially among the females in the camps, which from statistics had shown 2 to 10 ratio of female to male child education.

What is your solution?

The solution to the above problem of illiteracy and lack of competent teachers at the camps will be solved as follows;

Tabs, internet and other electronics that will be used for this training will be provided for the teachers and students.

The first stage of training will be for the teachers and then the students.

After the training there will be a practical section, where both teachers and students will put into practice what they have learned.

At the end of the training both teachers and students will be given free tabs and internet sources that they can continue to use.

Solar system will also be installed for them due to lack of stable electricity.

Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?

The population this project will target are the refugees at uhiogua displaced persons camp in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. We have done several researches at this camp in the past. They are in need of so many things, no regular supply from the government. They are at the mercies of good individuals who assist them from time to time with material things. But amidst all these is the lack of education for the children among these refugees because of congested classrooms and lack of teachers. Several times we visited the camp, we saw the children playing even during school hours.

Getting a good education, in a conducive environment, without covid 19 posing a threat, will help the children in future to get good jobs and be useful to themselves, their family and the society and the nation at large.

The problem, solution, and target population I described above are well-aligned to both the Challenge and my selected dimension because it will equip all the young male and female, regardless of age, gender, education, location, or ability, with culturally relevant digital literacy skills to enable participation in the digital economy and be useful to themselves, their families and society at large.

It will also curb the rate of crime in the society.
