Unfortunately, since the pandemic, the educational situation has worsened and online classes have become an impediment for children and adolescents to have access to quality education and practice their right of access to information. This strategy infringes the right to good quality education and access to information.
Not only does rural communities lack the access to vital services such as light. In Mexico, 27% of students in rural areas have access to a computers and internet; this means 73% lack the service. In addition, people face difficulties in handling electronic devices, evidencing the lack of digital literacy.
Therefore, we propose the solution of a mobile unit, which is, a vehicle in which we can bring internet to the most remote communities allowing them to connect to our network.
As mentioned previously, in our country, only 27% of students living in rural areas have access to a computer and the Internet, which means that 73% of children and adolescents cannot exercise their right to education or access to information since they lack these services. Added to this, most of the population does not know how to operate electronic devices, leading to the phenomenon called digital illiteracy.
As if that was not enough, since the pandemic of COVID-19, the situation has worsened and has forced the population to take online classes, which implies a challenge for them and taking into account the context mentioned.
The children and adolescents of the region (Morelos) have expressed to our organization their concern for their studies, which are being affected by their lack of access to computers and the Internet. This is an extremely serious problem that needs urgent attention, since the fact of not being able to receive quality education can negatively impact their future and their access to future job opportunities. In turn, this prevents them from achieving a better quality of life for themselves and their families.
We have in mind the equipment of a vehicle that can serve as a mobile unit that brings the internet to the neediest communities. The idea is that with this vehicle we can go to the most remote rural communities of the state of Morelos, those where telephone companies do not reach, in order to allow children and adolescents to connect to our mobile hotspot to be able to take their online classes and turn in their assignments on time so they can receive a quality education and continue their studies without compromising their performance and grades.
Morelos is a state with multiple small towns whose population lacks basic services, including technological infrastructure such as the internet. Although this affects people of all ages, our organization and the project we have in mind is focused on serving children and adolescents from rural communities in Morelos, including: Miacatlán, Tetecala and Mazatepec.
Our organization has an active participation in these communities, so we are close to their population and we know their needs first-hand since they are often the ones who come to us for help. We decided to focus on minors since they are the ones who represent the student community and have been the most affected since the pandemic by seeing their learning truncated. We are interested in helping them take classes and deliver their assignments so that they do not continue to fall behind in their learning and can exercise their human right to a quality education, as well as the right to access information.
- Provide low-income, remote, and refugee communities access to digital infrastructure and safe, affordable internet.
Morelos is a state with lots of rural/ remote regions in the surroundings, whose communities’ lack of access to digital infrastructure, including internet and computers. Our project directly addresses these necessities by giving the population access to the necessary tools for them to take classes and deliver their assignments.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea.
We selected the concept stage, since our project is still an idea whose viability is explored, but hasn´t been executed yet because of the lack of resources to get it started. However, we know it is a realistic project with potential to become a reality. And the most important of all; we know because of the experiences that the population has shared with us, that we would be addressing one of the main educational problems faced by the children and adolescents of the region.
- A new application of an existing technology
In our country, there isn´t any solution of the kind. The internet is a well known and vital technology; however, there is a strong inequality in terms of access to it. Therefore, the innovation in our project relies on the fact we want to contribute to an equal access to it by giving children and adolescents of remote comunities the chance of using internet and computers for their education.
