Garut Health Home - Saving Next Gen Institute
Saving Mother Lives & Next Generation Using DATA
Indonesian mothers in rural areas face difficulty in accessing the healthcare facilities/services they need during pregnancy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 190 Indonesian mothers die per 100,000 live births. This increases the risk of malnutrition children and stunting. Over 9 million Indonesian children are stunted. More than 4.5 million are severely stunted. Those problems will become threat to the future generation. Garut region, apparently has the second highest death rate of women in cases related to pregnancy or childbirth in West Java Province.
Rumah Sehat Garut (Garut health home) uses a data driven approach to help solve this problem. We mobilize local cadres to submit the data of pregnant woman monthly through the SNGI (saving next generation institute) mobile application, the collected data is leveraged by our dashboard with the help of unique algorithms as an early detection system in case of potential emergency. This system also serves to detect anomaly in child growth.
At this stage the model is very culturally relevant to our social-economic-demographic type in Indonesia, however it addresses an issue that affects many woman in the developing world. This issue is one of most challenging issues in Sustainable Development Goals. After 2.5 years in operation, we have already witnessed a significant decrease in the number of maternal deaths and seen growing support in the community for mothers in rural regions of Indonesia. We aim to expand this solution to other cities in Indonesia, or even in the region.
- Effective and affordable healthcare services
We use data real-time analytic as an early warning system for measuring risk pregnancy. Our data is quite rich, from Bio, number, to medical record (blood pressure, HB, upper arm size, body weight, complications), and other pregnancy history. Based on this data analytic were doing risk stratification and producing suggestion / advice to each pregnancy. All of our education and intervention are based on data. As far as we know, this data-driven approach is new here in Indonesia
We leverage technology to improve maternal health and early pregnancy risk detection. The importance of data analytics has becoming more important than ever, especially in this digital edge. We believe tech is a huge part of it, saving mother lives and the next generation using data.
we are building our own ‘technology’, consist of:
1.saving next Gen apps in android, for local cadres in Posyandu and village midwives to submit the data,
2. Dashboard, where our experts/doctors with the help of special algorithm can do data analyzing,
3. memobayi apps to monitor baby-child growth.
- We currently developing business model with fee for services model, where population who afford to pay our services should pay for the programs, this year 50% of our funding comes from business model.
- In 2019 our solutions will be replicated in the entire Garut city (so it will be recording more than 45.000 pregnancy a year);
- In next 4-5 months we will expanding Rumah Sehat – SNGI to other cities (Bandung and Sukabumi)
We are now working with Dompet Dhuafa (Islamic biggest NGO in indonesia) to replicate this model in 14 cities-provinces in Indonesia starting this year, that’s why they have covered 50% of our annual budget. So in the next 5 years we will reach 1 million pregnancies recorded in our system.
Those are parallel with our advocacy to government as well as corporate; to push evidence based policy so our model could impact more population in Indonesia and the region;
- Pre-natal
- Child
- Female
- Rural
- Lower
- East and Southeast Asia
Were reaching the most vulnerable segment on this maternal death case (poor family) by working with local government and Dompet Dhuafa health facilities; Now, cadres age 25-60 are using their simple mobile phone to submit the data, knowing that their pregnant woman in their neighborhood will not be covered if they don’t submit the data. all of the program are dedicated for all the woman on our dashboard, means they can also monitored easily by our experts everywhere, something luxury they don’t dare to dream of it in the past
11.134 pregnant woman and their babies since 2016;
We are serving them with our monitoring and recommendation, we are also have serial programs such as:
- Frequent Ultrasonografi check by obgyn, children growth monitoring with pediatrician;
- Hemoglobin check;
- Pre Natal academy, to equip newly wedding pair with the proper knowledge and practice of family planning, pregnancy, and psychological preparation;
- Lactation counseling, (60% of Indonesian mothers stop breastfeeding prematurely well within the first 1,000 days of a baby’s life – a period that’s crucial to an infant’s development);
30.000 in 12 months and more than 500.000 in next 3 years.
- Decreasing number of maternal death from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth;
- decreasing number of stunted children and malnutrition case;
- Number of new health cadres;
- Growing number of communities and local governments who support this initiative;
- Research cooperation with universities (currently we have an MOU with University of Indonesia, one of co-founder of SNGI also has a cooperation with fellow researcher and practitioner in Finlandia);
- Non-Profit
- 20+
- 1-2 years
Networking / fundraising;
Data analytics;
Expertise on mother and child healthcare; Entrepreneurship
Fee for service model/Cross subsidy, we currently have a business model with fee for services model, where population who afford to pay our services should pay for the programs, this year 50% of our funding comes from business model;
We are planning to launch SNGI apps as a start up to monetize our data in near future;
Government acquisition, we are doing advocacy to local government to replicate this model as part of their program;
I feel that participating in SOLVE will boost our capacity to meet our vision. I am pretty sure Solve will help us with the exposure to prominent figures working on this issue so we can have a mentor who gives us valuable insight on the e-health business development, data analytics, and impact measurement. I might also meet some fellows working on similar issue, which I can learn from. Moreover we will benefit from the networking during the program.
It takes time to change people behavior, and how community should support pregnant woman;
Long Process to convince government to adopt our model > We are hoping with global exposure with SOLVE can leverage our initiative so they would be aware of this innovation.
