Kinetic Diabetic
Today, there is a global epidemic of 1.4 billion people afflicted with diabetes.Let's fight diabetes together.
In the US there are 30 million diabetics, but when pre-diabetes is included, it swells to 100 million people with diabetic conditions, and that doesn’t include family members affected by their loved one’s disease. Globally, there exists 422 million diabetics and a total of over 1.4 billion people affected when pre-diabetes is included. Diabetes is such a health crisis in the US that more people died from it in 2017 than there were deaths from opioid overdoses. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the US and, according to the World Health Organization, it is one of the top four killers worldwide.
Just like there are countless studies proving a proper diet can potentially reverse type II diabetes, there are also numerous studies that prove involving family and friends with the diabetic’s treatment yields positive impacts their medical success.
Our algorithm-driven product and international community will not only provide such an environment, but the psychology of working together as units with a worldwide network of support, will build family bonds, help the diabetic succeed in managing their disease, and cause a reduction in this global epidemic.
Along with this network, Kinetic Diabetic will even further resolve this global issue by offering special meals, based on individual DNA test results, delivered from a number of local warehouses. These meals will be designed by AI and be catered specifically to the individual’s dietary tastes and needs, not only to better manage their diabetes, but they will cover other dietary food-as-medicine resolutions for other medical issues of the diabetic. For example, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, weight & obesity, AIDS, cancer, or digestive disorders are only a few of the problems specific diets can address. Thus, our software will function as a recommendation machine, offering meal choices catered to the individual’s taste and the food supplies available locally.
Diabetes is a problem that we all need to address. Greater publicity was given to the opioid crisis in 2017 than diabetes. That needs to change, especially on an international level. Both of these issues can be cured with proper help, although in either case, it’s a true battle. Our solution will change the dynamics of the global diabetes disaster by creating a healthy environment within the body. Both my wife and I are diabetic, so our very survival depends on Kinetic Diabetic’s success. Diets and involving family and friends is a start in curing the problem of diabetes. Kinetic Diabetic will save lives…fast!

IMPACT! Kinetic Diabetic (KD) creates life extending impact around world. A 50 year-old diabetic will live 8.5 years less than someone without the disorder, and it shows a lowered life expectancy at every age. KD is pledged to extend those numbers. Big pharma has a solid grip on those with diabetes, but our solution is designed to free people of the dependence of medications and the billions of dollars spent on them. Our community, meals, and nutritionists carter themselves to the tastes, ethnicities, preferences, and local food supplies to create diets that are highly anticipated.
These meals will be designed by AI and catered specifically to the individual’s dietary needs, not only to better manage their diabetes, but also other dietary food-as-medicine resolutions for medical issues of the diabetic such as high cholesterol, osteoporosis, weight & obesity, AIDS, cancer, or digestive disorders which are only a few of the problems specific diets can address. Our algorithms will function as a recommendation machine, offering meal choices catered to the individual’s taste and the food supplies available locally. The specific intent of this technology is to extend the life expectancy of diabetics across international borders.
The first goal we have set is to increase awareness of the critical nature of the diabetes epidemic. In 2017, we saw 70,000 deaths in the US as a direct result of diabetes. Internationally, in 2015 (most recent figure) 1.6 million deaths attributed to the disorder. We will spread the word about this life-threatening problem and that, largely through nutritional science and family aid, we can extend life expectancy. This will be achieved by reaching our target audience. We are hopeful that expertise and funds awarded to us in the Solve Challenge will aid in our marketing efforts.
As we grow, so will our goals. After the US (with its 10% affected population or 30 million diabetics), we will then develop our company in regions in order of need. Countries with low to moderate rising economies have the fastest expanding rates of diabetes. Our first international effort will be in the Marshall Islands that has 33% of its population with diabetes. Our next expansion will be China. Although their affected population is similar to the US, that accounts for 146 million people. At this point we will be able to see the number of lives saved.

Our message will emphasize that that many diabetics die early. People to feel they must participate or face death, thinking, “Joining is very wise.”
We will offer meals marketed with online ads and email, postal mail (to technophobic seniors), in stores, and at public events. Our vision is to prepackage and premeasure meals similar to Blue Apron. Our competitive advantage is that our meals will be created for individual need.
Our survey, promoted on the largest Facebook group for diabetics, will determine the best way to reach our target market.
We will spend much Solve prize money on marketing.
Regrettably, Kinetic Diabetic is in the prototype stage. We have completed the Social Enterprise Greenhouse Health & Wellness Accelerator in Providence which provided all of the tools to run a successful business. We have performed several informative surveys to better understand our audience and gain positive (and some negative) insights into our business. Also, a panel of MBA students at Roger Williams University did extensive research into the diabetes market so we would better understand our clientele.
I cannot think of an alternative initiative that can bring such a meaningful impact on the life extension of my fellow man.
With proper funding we will be able to reach many US and international communities in 1 – 3 years. Ideally, we see covering the hardest hit localities in the US in 18 – 24 months. In three years, we hope to at least start expansion into the Marshall Islands.
Our progress metrics we maintain information about KD’s successes. We will learn more as we progress forward, thus, we will know how our populations are victoriously affected.

I have a good solid network on LinkedIn as well as many connections that resulted from participating in the Social Enterprise Greenhouse Health & Wellness Accelerator. I am also widely connected in the regional diabetes network. I would be happy to share all of these connections with anyone needing them. Also, I have worked as a journalist and could help with publicity.
We will generate income by selling healthy meals, ready to cook, to our clients. Kinetic Diabetic will gain these clients through our efforts to build a community of diabetics who will be supported in managing their medical regiment which will control their disease. Our meals will be made from locally available food supplies and specifically designed to the tastes and dietary needs of our individual customer. This will create both a need and a desire for continued commitment of our client base.
Solve’s network will widen our reach. Solve mentors will provide this important input to further advance ourselves. Our success rests upon finding a way to develop DNA tests and algorithms to design meals fitting tastes and dietary requirements of our clients. We feel confident that MIT’s student body, professors, and campus will be able to create a hackathon or similar action to design such algorithms. Lastly, the publicity generated from our involvement with the Solve program will help us increase awareness of the diabetes epidemic which affects 1.4 billion people across all nations and cultures.
Kinetic Diabetic needs a large technical component that we lack. Our success, as we stand right now, depends on DNA tests and algorithms that we simply do not have the know-how to generate. We have done much market research, so we know there is a great need for a company such as ours. Doug has a great understanding of the user experience, but the programs running our operation is where we lack. We need Solve’s connections to realize our dream.
