Indonesia has one of the largest education system in the world but unfortunately, its performance is under others (OECD, 2018). In 2018, there are 6.87 million unemployment people in Indonesia, the highest percentage of it consists of vocational school graduates which is 8.92% (Central Bureau of Statistics, 2018). One of the factors that cause the high level of unemployment of vocational high school is the lack of quality in education because the teaching materials itself do not meet the industrial standards (Alfa, 2017). Furthermore, vocational high school partnerships with the industrial world is relatively weak (Efendi, 2016). Whereas, the cooperation of vocational school with industry is very important considering the benefits to be gained from the cooperation, such as the competence given to learners really in accordance with that required in industry, so that the students of vocational school can be directly accepted in the working world.
From our research, here are the reasons why the industry does not recruit vocational school graduates:
- Gaps between student’s competencies and industrial requirement.
- Only few students have proven portfolios or even experience in actual project.
- Tech company does not even know that software engineering majors exists in vocational high school.
In Arkademy, we focus on vocational school students majoring software engineering because we see that Indonesian digital economy is growing rapidly and it needs a lot of IT graduates but the current talents are still lacking in quality. We concern that a change is needed and we have a mission to educate the students to become technology experts, so here is what we offer:
- Providing online courses that align with industry standard.
- Giving a dashboard for teacher to monitor the growth of their students’ performance & skills.
- Providing online training for teachers.
- Connecting the students to the companies for internship or to get hired based on their performance data and profiles that the students build overtime on our platform.
Here is a successful story about one of Arkademy’s student, Yobel, 17 years old, who have a dream to work as a software engineer after he graduated. He enrolled several courses in Arkademy, then get his first freelance job on our platform. After that successful freelance project, he got hired as fulltime employee by the same company who gave him the freelance project.
What makes us different?
We are data driven. We provide actual performance data to all stakeholder (Student, Teacher/School, Hiring Partner/Company, Government), making education more personal and focused on personal growth instead, so each student can track their own growth, what the industry actually needs, and the teacher can help each of the students reaching those needs.
In short, we are tracking all the skills such as the programming languages used, how many projects were done, what are other achievement that the students have, and teachers can monitor those data using our dashboard. Students learning data are tracked overtime and automatically becoming their online CV and portfolio to help them connect with the companies later.

Why education institution need to be more data driven? because with the student's data they can conclude whether the students already have competencies align with the industry's requirement.

Start from 2017, there are 5200 students, 150 vocational teachers, 31 mentors and 35 hiring partner (company) who are connected on our platform.Up
Up until december 2018, we are planning to add 300 vocational teachers and 2700 vocational students to be connected on our platform. In next year we plan to scale to 624.000 students from 5200 vocational schools. In 3rd year we will expand to higher vocational education and university.

Our team consist of many diverse background based on the value chain, we have in depth technical skills, education researcher, and business development who have years of experiences.
we used to be working in tech company and we know the problem that we are trying to solve is a big problem and we have perfectly fit solution for this kind of problem that will affect both the industry and education institution.
- We use B to B model to partnership with vocational school and education institution (Yearly contract), and the school will be charged by the number of students who subscribe video based material.
- We also charge the companies for each students recruited (monthly paid).
Our target is to provide quality education with global industry standard and we believe by joining solve program will provide us with access to global level industry to synchronize our education program, also to connect our students with global opportunity.
By joining solve we will have global exposure, with the big name of MIT we sure that we could gain trust from both international and local (to break local barriers within education institution bureaucracy).
