Saving Pollinators' nesting sites in Western Kenya
Pollinators; HoneyBees; Wasps; Birds; Rodents; Monkeys; Beetles; Butterflies; Humans; watermelon; cucumber; Pumpkin; crotolaria; Blacknightshade; Amaranth; Bats; nesting-sites
1. Problem: Due to increasing population growth within western kenya partly as result of devolved government system since 2010 and increase in university establishments in the region has witnessed clearance of most nesting sites of basic pollinators such as wasps; honeybees; birds butterflies and rodents among other pollination agents. previous straw-roofed housing that was popular in the region was home to such pollinators as the beetle that pollinated such food crops as soybeans; sorghum and corn that is now showing low yield at harvest times; concrete wall buildings and now shrinking dead-wood
2. Proposed Solution: Establishment of nesting sites and foraging ground for the proposed pollinators and possible green villages
3. Global Effect: With secure ground for prolific pollinators progeny of most plant species that includes food crop shall ensure food security for the region which ultimately addresses The sustainable development goal number 2 - towards ending global Hunger, encourage food security, improve nutrition and agriculture
Western kenya region being home to the only remnant of Tropical rain forest in the country that is host to UNEP, The Kakamega Rain Forest, reliable host of pollinators shall not only address a food-secure Forest Adjucent community that shall act as a reliable Buffer zone to this forest ecosystem, but also guarantee the future of this water-shed of upto 84 rivers and streams that supply the world's largest fresh water lake, The Lake victoria that ultimately supplys The river Nile
Such important food crops as The medicinal amaranth species; crotolaria; cucumbers; sorghum and mangoes trees require particular pollinators which shall be addressed by this activity
- Upskilling, Reskilling, and Job Matching
Establishment of potential green villages within the region shall ultimately inform the constituents how to integrate economic development with environmental sustainability, how to reduce poverty through reducing vulnerability, and how to make the environment everyone's business, including those in both Kenya's National and County governments. Then creation of well gis-mapped nesting sites for pollinators shall be determined as a process for solving the challenge
Satellite imagery shall be sourced as to vegetation cover was say in 1988 and then by 2016 or any latest data available for Western Kenya. Mapped Soil fertility data, Rivers & rate of erosion against population greatly used. Local knowledge available and that documented about crops and tree species, birds, insects and rodents about the region shall be compared in detail to ascertain a near eco-balance in relation to pollinators.
A simple Natural Resource Management Plan shall be incorporated into our model as well as integrating Population, Health and Environment, PHE to create synergy embraced
1. Plant 5,000 specific indigenous tree species to nest certain bird species as pollinators
2. Partner with 50 local learning institutions through created environmental clubs and establish woodlots on the schools' respective land property to plant flowers and or identified tree species for nests and or foraging sites for local pollinators
3. Establish 5 green villages through special zoning model vial local participatory Resource Appraisal, PRAs of the local residents
To eventually Cover the Lake Victoria Basin by offering a platform for exchange visits between communities of this region for knowledge and experience sharing

Initiate exchange visits between selected communities and currently established demo-plots in western kenya. al ready western kenya region under the perceived pilot project area is the main catchment of the lake victoria basin from which North Eastern Tanzania and South Eastern Uganda fall within
60 people are initial implementers of the on-going program through Honey Beefarming project. 2012 i registered a cooperative society called KEITHRO FARMERS COOPERATIVE SOCIETY. KEITHRO is an acronym for Kakamega County Economic derivation from Insects and other viable organisms from phylum arTHROpoda hence KEITHRO. Draining an area of 194200 km2 (Lake Victoria Basin Commission 2007a) with estimated population of 30 million people pollinators shall be and remain key factors of food production for the population. The progeny of sexually propagated flora ensure reliable rainfall for the region as well as vegetation cover hence natural clean air and soil erosion mitigation
In 12 months i project to be serving the projected 2.2 million people that constitute The kakamega county
pollinators conservation shall directly address food security to the population in target communities due to cross pollination
in 36 months my project shall have covered the following counties within western kenya region: Kakamega; Bungoma; Trans Nzoia; Busia; Vihiga; Siaya; Kisumu; HomaBay; Kisii; Migori with a population projection of 12.5 million https://data.humdata.org/datas...

My team and I have Trained in PARTICIPATORY NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT programme; integration of POPULATION, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT, PHE; CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION programme; Geographic Information Systems, GIS; TREE NURSERY MANAGEMENT; NUTRITION & VALUE ADDITION; BASIC BEE KEEPING & HARVESTING TECHNOLOGY
The cooperative society model is to have members make savings from surplus produce from their goods or services supplied in the form of shareholding hence initial ownership of the project by such membership which can eventually access soft credit facility against their shareholding portfolio
I apply to Solve for their elaborate model at Work of the future challenge; the Teamwork options; events; Articles and partnership, the grand offer option is also a stitch in time
all of my project team work on voluntary basis hence at times less motivating; need for specialized skill and raw material to manufacture the right kind of nesting sites that includes bee hives both for carpenter bees, mason bees; The right tree species for hosting special worms and insect that attracts certain bird species need to be bought from specialized and recommended tree nursery by the Kenya Forest Research Institute, KEFRI; Reading/writing material for project members to improve on knowledge currently available; Transport and communication logistics around the region to access sites and farming communities for further recruitment
