NGO Mama Alice
Frederique studied Orthopedaedic Music Therapy at the Conservatory of Maastricht in the Netherlands. After her graduation she undertook positions as a senior communications trainer at Vodafone, as a tour guide and charity volunteer in Central America and as a workshop leader for the charity, War Child, in Eritrea.
In 2005, Frederique established her own NGO, 'Mama Alice', and has been on the managing team since its inception. She has built a team of local teachers, psychologists, social workers and nurses to create the best possible environment for children and young people to develop their full potential and to contribute to a peaceful future for themselves and for their communities.
One of Frederique’s greatest achievements is the development of a hospitality training center and restaurant - offering employment and internships for young local people who successfully finished NGO Mama Alice’s vocational programs.
Poverty and its serious physical, mental and social consequences is the biggest problem in the rural community and slums Frederique works in. To improve the situation, Frederique wants to offer young, future leaders in rural villages vocational training, the students learn how to start a sustainable, experiential tourism project in their communities. After graduation, the students receive support with public relations and administration. This strategy will lead to successful, sustainable hospitality projects. It not only results in a positive, healthy future for young people, but also contributes to economic development throughout the rural regions. And as the rural villages develop economically and socially, the vicious poverty circle will be broken.
The communities will educate travelers about the rich Peruvian rural culture and nature. The people of the community become proud of what they have to offer, and this leads to friendship, understanding and mutual respect between the community and tourists.
According to the 2019 Social Panorama of Latina America Report, over 191 million people are currently living in poverty in Latin America.

According to this annual study, 31,8 percent of the Latin American population is currently poor and 11,5 percent is living in extreme poverty
In 2018, 20.5% (6,765,000 people) of the population of Peru is at or below the poverty line, from which 2.8% (924,000 people) earn less than the poverty line, which is US$80 per month.
Poverty mostly affects children, adolescents, women, Indigenous people, Afro-descendant people, residents of rural areas, and those who are unemployed.
Peru has been seriously affected by Covid-19 and is hitting the country's poorest communities the hardest. The number of citizens infected with coronavirus rose to 322,710 and the death toll reached 11,682 as of Saturday July 11th. A lot of Peruvians have no savings and only one in three poor households has access to running water. Covid-19 shows that we can't wait to tackle poverty and the income inequality.
To prevent further migration, people in rural communities need to have a source of income. The problems in the slums are already serious and further migration from rural to urban will only increase problems.
NGO Mama Alice funded ‘QuinuaQ’, a hospitality training center where young people receive vocational training to become chefs, waiters, bartenders and tour guides. The center also offers internships and generates employment.
NGO Mama Alice feels urged to extend its work to rural areas to reduce migration from rural to urban areas and break the vicious circle of poverty.
Potential students from rural areas will be nominated by their communities for a scholarship to our hospitality and tourism vocational training. We select 150 highly motivated students from these nominations and we teach them over the next six months to start a hospitality project in their own communities.
In addition to cooking, tourism, tour guiding, customer orientation and hygiene, all students are individually coached in business writing. After graduating, all students are prepared to promote their community and generate income for themselves and their broader community.
NGO Mama Alice will promote sustainable and unique experiential tourism, through successful projects realized by her graduates. The NGO will also professionally manage reservations and retain a small part of the booking fees to cover costs and to enable the vocational training for future groups, ensuring the sustainability of her projects.
Since 2005 NGO Mama Alice has supported 39.455 Peruvians. We are known for our deep and broad interventions, positively changing communities from the inside-out. We empower people to seize life’s opportunities – using their newfound, improved circumstances to help others in return.
Two of the main and most frequently mentioned concerns in our communities are poverty and lack of proper education. To address these issues, NGO Mama Alice offers, amongst others, hospitality training courses through ‘QuinuaQ’, adapted to the needs of society.
We are unique in our focus of not only improving knowledge and professional skills, but also social skills and a positive self-image. While we work with the most vulnerable group of young people (between 18 and 30 years old), 80% of our graduates find a job, start their own business, or continue studying!
Excellent co-operation with the community organizations and a participatory approach are our prerequisites. In this context, the community councils propose their candidate(s) for a scholarship.
After graduation, our students start their own projects. These projects will not only generate income for the graduates, but for their entire communities, creating an enormous impact on hundreds of thousands of people.
- Elevating opportunities for all people, especially those who are traditionally left behind
The NGO Mama Alice team, headed by Frederique, is driven by a strong sense of urgency and justice and supports the most vulnerable and poor people in society. We care about the people who have the least chances in life, but who need it the most.
Our target group are the people who are most affected by poverty: children, adolescents, women, unemployed, Afro-descendant people, residents of rural areas and Indigenous people.
With this project, participating rural communities will experience that education, entrepreneurial support, and an inclusive society, make a sustainable change possible and will break the vicious cycle of poverty.
Frederique grew up in a warm, supportive family. Her mother, Alice Kallen-Frijns, was a generous and loving woman who provided attention and care to everyone. When Alice died of ALS in 2004, Frederique made the decision to follow her heart and start a foundation in her mother’s honor. And so NGO Mama Alice was born: an NGO that, with love and transparency, gives many communities the inspiration and opportunities for a better, more sustainable and loving environment.
NGO Mama Alice funded the hospitality training center ‘QuinuaQ’ to offer training, internships and workplaces for young people who lack access to the labor market. The profits are donated to NGO Mama Alice for its psychosocial and educational projects.
Something special happened in the Mama Alice training restaurant: rich Peruvians, often not very empathic towards the less fortunate, were impressed by the expertise of the well-dressed, eloquent guides, waiters, and chefs in training. The great social distance disappeared and was replaced by respect and real interaction.
Frederique realized that well-promoted and attractive tourist activities in rural areas would not only generate income and stop the need for migration, but also increase the respect and empathy between the different income groups in South America.
As a small child Frederique declared she wanted to start an orphanage. Her idea to help children then became the focus of her study and vocation. Driven by a great conviction that everyone should have a chance for happiness, she chose to dedicate her time to children living under difficult circumstances.
Based in Peru, Frederique took in street children and together they form a loving, chaotic and fun family. Despite the circumstances in which they grew up, these boys are an example of resilience, humor and perseverance. Facing the toughest conditions and greatest setbacks, these boys became her motivation and lasting faith in people and belief in a better future.
In appreciation of her loving upbringing and opportunities in life, Frederique is driven by an immense sense of wanting to give something back to society. This inspiration was infectious, spreading to NGO Mama Alice colleagues and the young people in the programs.
Seeing the impact of NGO Mama Alice and QuinuaQ with her unique working method, Frederique is highly motivated to use her innovative approach to expand and generate even more training, internships and workplaces - so the vicious circle of poverty in South America can be broken.
Frederique has developed a broad knowledge and experience of the sector through her work prior to NGO Mama Alice, as a tour guide, conductor, music therapist, teacher and communication trainer in Europe, Africa and Latin America.
For the past 15 years Frederique has led the educational and psychosocial programs from NGO Mama Alice where she is responsible for fundraising and making the connection between Peru and western countries. Frederique is the driver behind the hospitality training center. Her vision to provide training and internship opportunities and access to the labor market for hundreds of young people from poor backgrounds, resulted in the funding of ‘QuinuaQ’. Frederique is hostess in the restaurant, responsible for public relations and directing the hospitality team. She ensures that goals are achieved, that structural evaluation takes place and she creates an environment where students become responsible adults.
The most important condition for success, is working with the right people. Frederique can form partnerships across all sectors and cultures. In the Netherlands Frederique has a great network, cooperating with partners, philanthropy funds and universities. In Peru, NGO Mama Alice works together with local authorities and numerous other foundations.
Frederique has handed over the day-to-day management of NGO Mama Alice to a highly skilled Peruvian, Elba Zegarra Vila.
By winning several important prizes in the past, Frederique and her NGO have demonstrated that their work has immense impact, that the NGO is strongly committed to transparency and that its method is unique, with potential to expand.
The world collapsed for Frederique and her family when they heard that Frederique’s mother, Alice was suffering from ALS. Frederique resigned from her job and took care of her mother until Alice’s death in 2004. Frederique decided to turn her great grief into a new life, something hopeful: NGO Mama Alice.
The same way as she processed and dealt with the grief of losing her mother, she tackles the challenges in NGO Mama Alice: In what way can the current circumstances be used as an incubator for something good, something better?
Mama Alice has been offering vocational training for almost 15 years. A major problem NGO Mama Alice encountered was the lack of good internship placements where the students could gain experience.
Frederique came up with various solutions and consulted with her partners in the Netherlands, business experts and other NGOs. She researched the Peruvian market and concluded that a restaurant, tour office and ecolodges (planned for 2021) offers the best opportunities to generate internships and employment.
Plans were presented, Frederique raised the funds for the construction and the restaurant opened in April 2019. Frederique turned the problem into a success.
NGO Mama Alice offers vocational training, psychosocial care, and education to families living in extreme poverty in Ayacucho, a rural town in the Andes, one of the poorest areas of Peru. The NGO was fully dependent on donations until 2019 when Frederique, striving for sustainability and less dependency, came up with the idea of a social enterprise: ‘QuinuaQ’ – a hospitality training center - with restaurant.
The idea was discussed with her Peruvian colleagues but was so innovative that the team could not picture it.
Frederique looked for all the information and discussed her plans with experts. She learned about the challenges but became more and more convinced of the great possibility of success. By sharing every detail of the plans and involving the team in decisions, Frederique motivated all stakeholders to believe in the program. Eventually the team identified itself very much with the social enterprise and shares Frederique’s dream of expanding its activities to rural communities.
- Nonprofit
QuinuaQ’ – our hospitality training center – funded by NGO Mama Alice, is innovative and unique for Peru, for multiple reasons:
- Students are trained as waiters, bartenders, tour guides and chefs and do an internship in the center itself, thus meeting guests from the very beginning.
- Our expertise is in sustainable tourism. We ‘use’ hospitality to bridge the gap between people from different income groups and we see that they interact with each other, creating mutual respect and understanding.
NGO Mama Alice would like to expand her program and offer vocational training to young leaders in rural areas. This would be innovative and unique, for multiple reasons:
- The rural communities nominate their own candidate for a scholarship for this training. During the training the students prepare a business plan to execute in their own community. The nomination guarantees the necessary support from the community.
- We present the best business plans to the philanthropic network of NGO Mama Alice. Most of the projects are ideal for crowdfunding and we have used this medium successfully in the past.
- We introduced a new business model to the region: by taking over the PR and administration of the newly established hospitality projects (and bringing the projects online for bookings and information) in return for a small fee, we ensure the sustainability.
- Offering additional modules such as English, social media and spirituality to the hospitality training, is unique in Peru and focuses on a constant empowerment of people in the poorest communities of South America.
NGO Mama Alice wants to create change in and contribute to a stronger society. The process to change is often unpredictable and requires a learning capacity. To create and optimize social value, NGO Mama Alice has a structural evaluation system.
- Metrics for evaluating success include reports from the public schools of our students and percentages of graduates who find work or continue their studies.
- Another evaluation measure is whether our objectives will be achieved as planned within 10 years in the communities where we work. We worked for 10 years in Keiko Sofia and 11 in Junio (both slums in Ayacucho, Peru) and achieved the desired, sustainable results and we successfully applied our exit strategy.
- Our transparent evaluation and provision of information is evidenced by the fact that the Mama Alice Foundation won the PwC Transparency Award in 2006, 2014 and 2015 for best reporting of small charities.
- Every five years the target group and collaborating organizations in Peru are interviewed and the results are processed anonymously. The feedback from these interviews is of great value to evaluate and optimize our impact.
- The school in Yanama scored 4th place in a test (ECE) from the Ministry of Education out of 67 public schools in the province of Huamanga. The director of the school thanked NGO Mama Alice for the great cooperation and this impressive result.
- Frederique Kallen and NGO Mama Alice won several more awards confirming their good work and great impact:
2005 World of Difference Prize Vodafone
2005 Flair Magazine, woman of the year
2007 Margriet Magazine, Better World Woman
2012 Grahame Maher Award
2014 Silent helper Cordaid

As the number of communities increases, so will the need for support from our multi-disciplinary team (teachers, psychologists, social workers, nurses).

2021
- NGO Mama Alice plans to work with a total of 3070 people in the slums and rural communities of Peru.
- Winning the Elevate prize will enable us to expand our vocational training to 150 students / rural leaders (yearly). The projects in their communities generate income for a minimum of 3 extra people per community (e.g. organizing tours, selling agricultural products, transport).
2025
- NGO Mama Alice works with a total of 10.000 people in the slums and rural communities of Peru.
- NGO Mama Alice's work contributes to a more inclusive society in which the great social distance disappears.
- A booking site will be designed for Mama Alice, specifically for small, sustainable projects.

Barrier 1
Mama Alice offers vocational training courses for tour guide, bartender, waiter and cook. The students learn how to write a business plan and are able to set up their own business after graduation. After graduation, the youngsters want to start their hospitality project and therefore need to present themselves for a microcredit, manage the reservations and organize public relations and marketing. These three issues are not executable for most graduates and reduce their chance for success.
Barrier 2
For the success of the hospitality projects and to break the cycle of poverty in rural communities, it’s necessary that small, qualitative and sustainable hospitality projects are brought to the attention of a large audience. There is currently no widely known booking site where tourists find hospitality projects with a sustainability label.
NGO Mama Alice has a - for a small foundation - large and loyal network. For our current activities, exposure and 'being known' to the general public, was not necessary. So we focused mainly on professionalization and good local cooperation. Our network, budget and knowledge are too limited to promote widely all projects from the graduates and thus generate sufficient bookings.
Barrier 3
To raise the number of students and to develop a booking site, the budget of NGO Mama Alice will increase significantly, while the NGO wants to reduce its dependency of donations and is looking for revenue models that guarantee sustainability.
1
Students from the Hospitality vocational training receive IT lessons, to have access to technology and knowledge, to share ideas and foster innovation.
Mama Alice presents the hospitality projects to trustworthy microcredit institutions and support them in presenting on crowdfunding sites.
NGO Mama Alice will support all projects by managing the reservations and organize public relations and marketing for all graduate projects.
2
The graduate students should be given a chance to present their project to a large audience. For this purpose, a unique booking site should be designed for small, qualitative and sustainable hospitality projects. All presented hospitality projects have received the sustainability and quality label of Mama Alice. This way, the booking site visitors are only shown reliable, sustainable projects, aimed at unique experiences.
Initially, only graduates of the vocational training of NGO Mama Alice are presented. Later, other small-scale, sustainable projects are also eligible for the Mama Alice label and to be presented on the booking site.
3
It is important to reduce Mama Alice's dependence on funds and increase sustainability. This can be done with a revenue model in the booking system. If with each booking a small percentage goes to Mama Alice, the costs of public relations, administration and vocational training can be covered. The exact percentage to break even has yet to be determined.
In addition, with this revenue model, graduates give something back to society for the opportunities (free professional training, guidance and advice for startups) they received themselves.
We cannot achieve our vision for Peru, its children and its communities alone. That is why we team up and work collaboratively with public and private institutions that complement our services. Within the communities in which we work, we approach all foundations, organizations, and agencies for collaborative opportunities. We refer clients and receive referrals from other organizations. We organize workshops and campaigns together.
In Peru, NGO Mama Alice collaborates with local authorities, the Ministry of Tourism, community boards, public schools, Program Leche, the police, Reniec, universities, Defensa de Mujer and World Vision.
In the Netherlands, we have a partnership with three fundraising foundations: Stichting Mamita Alice, Stichting Kinderen van de Zon and Stichting Global Exploration. These three foundations raise funds to support our work in Peru and advise Frederique and her team where necessary.
We work together with various colleges and universities, including the Maastricht Hotel Management School and a think tank has been formed to brainstorm about ‘QuinuaQ’ – our hospitality training center.
Frederique has also built up a good relationship with various philanthropic funds which support NGO Mama Alice and in addition to financial contributions, provide her with advice and assistance.
Other benefactors are The Wild Geeze Foundation (the Netherlands) and World of Children Foundation (USA).
Since 2005, NGO Mama Alice has been receiving donations to carry out her work in Peru. NGO Mama Alice works together with three Dutch partners. Furthermore, Frederique has set up a large network of donors and funds in the Netherlands. Because of the long-term and good relationship with funds and donors, NGO Mama Alice feels assured that at least 60% of the NGO Mama Alice budget will be covered by their financial support.
The budget varies a little each year and to become less dependent on donations, NGO Mama Alice decided to start a social enterprise 'QuinuaQ'. This social enterprise runs a restaurant, a climbing park, a souvenir shop and a tour agency. In 2021 this will be expanded with ecolodges. It is QuinuaQ's goal that within 10 years, the profits of the social enterprise can cover 30% of NGO Mama Alice's budget for psychosocial and educational activities.
By winning The Elevate Prize, NGO Mama Alice can offer scholarships yearly to 150 youngsters in rural areas. Once they start their sustainable tourism and hospitality projects, NGO Mama Alice will receive a small share per booking which will allow the NGO to cover PR costs and to pay for the vocational training of new groups, ensuring sustainability.
We have experienced that we receive more brand awareness and donations since the start of our training restaurant. The special experience makes guests to want to contribute extra. We expect that eventually 5% of the NGO’s budget will be generated by donations from tourists.
A large proportion of the current activities carried out by NGO Mama Alice are made possible thanks to donations from our partners in the Netherlands:
In 2019 the Mamita Alice Foundation supported the work of NGO Mama Alice with $114,600.21, and the Children of the Sun Foundation donated $179,590.34. Both foundations transfer every quarter the budgeted amount for the next 3 months.
For more information:
NGO Mama Alice also receives support from the World of Children Education Award, This is a grant of $ 100,000 to be received in four instalments, first instalment was november 2019.
Another foundation that donates directly to NGO Mama Alice is the Wilde Ganzen Foundation. In 2019 the Wilde Ganzen Foundation donated $ 36.472 for construction activities. (www.wildeganzen.nl)
The transfers from the Netherlands by Stichting Mamita Alice Nederland, Stichting Kinderen van de Zon, Stichting Wilde Ganzen and other donors, are recorded as financial income.

The income in 2019 that was not spent in 2019, is not shown in this overview, but is shown in the balance sheet, ‘current liabilities’: total of $ 104.670,39.

5 year budget for QuinuaQ – Hospitality Training Center:

Since its opening in 2019, the social enterprise QuinuaQ, has been more successful than budgeted. It made a small profit in 2019 that has been reinvested in the building.
Every year NGO Mama Alice submits an application to its permanent partners in the Netherlands for the permanent educational and psychosocial programmes. The partners look for funds to finance the agreed budget.
Should Frederique win The Elevate Prize, NGO Mama Alice can expand her work to rural areas and break the vicious circle of poverty in various regions from Peru.
The project can be expanded to other countries in Latin America. In order to finance this, we will submit applications for donations (among others) to:
- USAID (USA)
Goal: Education for rural youth, $ 25.000,00
- National postcode lottery (Netherlands)
Goal: Vocational training for underprivileged young people and thus creating a sustainable future for rural communities, $ 100.000,00
- Mincetur (Ministerio de Comercio Exterior y Turismo, Peru)
Goal: Promoting sustainable tourism and reducing migration from rural to urban areas, $ 40.000,00
- Ford Foundation (USA)
Goal: Education for rural youth, generating employment opportunities, $ 30.000,00
- United Nations Foundation (USA)
Goal: Education and equality for disadvantaged rural youth, $ 30.000,00
Furthermore, our aim is to establish partnerships with large travel agencies, microcredit agencies, large NGOs and local organisations.
The budget 2020 for the basic programs carried out by NGO Mama Alice is: $ 267.525,01. At the end of 2019, the applications for grants were submitted to partners Mamita Alice and foundation Kinderen van de Zon and accepted by both partners.
Budget 2020 regular programs

In addition to the regular programmes, Frederique will rasie funds in Peru, the Netherlands and the USA to enable the extension of work to rural areas.
Extension work to rural areas 2020-2022
Budget estimate
- Hospitality vocational training 150 students: $ 150.000,00, (November 2020- November 2021)
- Educational training and guidance Frederique: $ 10,000.00, (October 2020 – May 2021)
- Expansion of NGO Mama Alice education and psychosocial activities to rural areas: $100,000.00 (November 2021-November 2022)
- Development booking site for sustainable hospitality projects: $100,000.00 (May 2021- December 2021)
- Public relations costs: $ 30,000.00 (December 2021 – December 2022)
Frederique and her NGO Mama Alice have been working in Peru since 2005. Her initial support to 90 children has grown over the years and NGO Mama Alice has made an impact on thousands of people.
Since a few years, Frederique dreams of a major extension of the activities to reach more people and break the cycle of poverty.
We have the steady support of our partners, various funds, and many donors which permits us to do important work in Ayacucho, one of the poorest cities in Peru. But implementation of our plans to expand to rural areas (and in the future to other regions in Latin America), requires a larger budget and a larger network.
This prize is a once of a lifetime opportunity for us, we are ready and incredibly motivated for this new step. The combination of prize money, professional management, a tailored media and marketing campaign plus access to your dynamic network, is exactly what we need to carry out our plans and support tens of thousands of people so that they can start living, instead of surviving.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we, together, could take a step towards societies where people have a better self-image, hope for a better future and have a fair income, being able to take care of their children?
We want to give opportunities to people who are normally disadvantaged, who do not receive help and who won’t be able to break the vicious circle of poverty on their own.
- Funding and revenue model
- Mentorship and/or coaching
- Marketing, media, and exposure
- Other
We would like to partner with, or receive support from, an IT company, for the design of a booking site that can be managed by NGO Mama Alice. We also hope to receive advice on how to improve our IT curriculum.
We would like to partner with trustworthy microcredit institutions so by presenting their businessplan, NGO Mama Alice graduates get a chance at microcredit.
We would like to receive support to improve and extend the reach of our marketing, (social) media and exposure. We would also very much like to receive support in developing a Mama Alice quality mark for sustainable hospitality projects.
We would like to receive coaching on developing a revenue model, reducing Mama Alice's dependence on funds and increasing sustainability.
Frederique would like to be coached in improving social media usage for the NGO and in managing the administration of the various programs that Mama Alice offers.
We would like to collaborate with travel agencies who offer unique experiences. The graduates from our vocational training will present unique projects with a guaranteed good hygiene.
The youngsters write a well thought business plan under the guidance of our experts. After graduating, they can set up a quality hospitality project with a small investment. Therefore, we would very much like to work together with microcredit organisations, so all graduates can present their business plan.
We could use help at presenting our work to the outside world, organizing campaigns. We also don't have a social media plan yet. For the promotion of all projects on our booking site and for the NGO itself, it would mean a lot if we could set up a partnership with a company that sets up our PR plan.
A partnership with an IT company is a prerequisite for the success of this project. A simple, well-functioning booking site is crucial to compete with the many booking sites. Also the maintenance and repairs will have to be outsourced, the NGO Mama Alice team does not have this knowledge.
Many NGO Mama Alice children come from families with multi-problems and have attachment problems, therefore we have a very strict volunteer policy. In this vocational training we work with young adults and would like to receive a number of expert volunteers who offer guest classes within the curriculum, such as IT and photography. The permanent NGO Mama Alice team consists, next to Frederique, of expert locals.
