ORO NATION COVID 19 AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
My name is Katherine Sayid Adamu, the C.E.O. Edu Adams Global foundation.
i was born into a polygamus family of sixteen (16) children. I lost my parents at a very tender age which led to my inability to conclude my primary education . At this point, i have to go into petty trading and begging so as to pay my fees in view of my desire to be educated. This is what drove my passion to looking out for the less privilege in the society.
As a woman, i have faced a lot of discrimination from my immediate society, my distance relatives felt i was a girl and shouldn't be sent to school, and in the university, some of my lecturers believe that defiling me was the only way i can pass their exams. in all of these bad experiences, i have choosen to live and work for humanity.
I am currently committed to sensitizing the public, most especially the rural dwellers on the dangers of covid 19 and measures to stay safe. I am also committed to ensuring the rural people, especially the elderly and the widows have some food to eat while under lock down in view of the dangers of the current pandemic.
I'm proposing to go on massive sensitization campaign and palliative sharing aimed at reducing the effect of the pandemic
The specific problem i am working to solve is the sensitization of the public on the dangers of corona virus and provision of palliatives to help reduce the effect of hunger, most especially in the rural communities.
The scale of the covid 19 pandemic within my community and the world over is high and increasing on daily basis. The number of people affected by covid 19 pandemic cannot be ascertain at the moment in view of its increasing nature.
My projects focuses on sensitization of the public, most especially the local community and palliatives sharing to the elderly widows and the less priviledge in the local community.
Our palliatives includes: Cash, Assorted food items, sanitisers and liquid soap for hand washing.
We went into acquiring educative jingles which were used in a rented van with public address system as an additional measure for our sensitization program.
local media were also used for this sensitization too.
My project serve the five local government of Oron which includes : okobo , oron, urue offong oruko, udung uko and mbo local government areas, which made up the oron federal constituency, and the entire public at large. That is why we tagged it Oro Nation covid 19 awareness/ sensitization campaign.
Oron is the Riverine area of Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria, with little or no development impact despite the massive oil extraction from the region.
Our campaign serves men, women, widows, the less privilege and the public at large.
We took out a specific time and date to meet with the widows of Eyo Abasi community, during this soul touching meeting , we share palliatives for the elderly widow and single mothers.
in this meeting we shared cash, assorted food items, sanitisers, and hand wash to reduce their suffering.
- Elevating issues and their projects by building awareness and driving action to solve the most difficult problems of our world
My project on corona virus sensitization is an action driven primarily to educate the local communty on how to stay safe and secure in the face of the most deadly pandemic.
It is community driven, with the support of the community leaders.
Covid 19 is the most difficult problem of our world today in view of the way it kills, with no known solution on site.
We advocate, all hands must be on deck.
We share palliatives on the other hand to reduce the effect of the pandemic and alleviate hunger.
I was in the local market to purchase some food items in the month of march 2020, when i notice that the locals were not observing any form of safety measures as spelt out by the government of my country.
This drew my curiosity to taking sample of ideas by questioning them on what they know about corona virus. To my amazement, 95% of those i spoke to were completely ignorant of what corona virus was, and some were in complete denial.
I took a second walk to the beach market, and the responses were even worse, and this gave me a sleepless night over the plight of my community in the face of a deadly virus. These were what provoked my rise to action, through sensitization projects.
In the process of sensitization, we discovered that part of the problems was hunger, and so, we decided to add palliatives sharing to our campaign strategy.
sharing of palliatives is one of the strategy that helpsto draw the attention of the local community, who weren't ready to listen to us at first.
We also took palliatives to the widows and single mothers, to help alleviate their sufferings during the lock down period.
Basically, I am very passionate about service to humanity, which is my major drive.
Covid 19 project is very important to me because it's a project that helps to save lives.
My greatest motivation is God and humanity. My second motivation is the love i have for community. I am so drawn and close to my community and i enjoy serving them too.
I use my projects to prove to my community that, what a man can do, a woman can do better.
And I'm happy to see that my community love and support me.
I am a woman community leader, with a good relationship with my male counterparts, this places me in a vantage position to serve my people.
I have the vocal abilities and strength to serve.
We work as a group and as much as possible do engage the community people to be part of our programmes.
When I came up with the covid 19 sanitisation project, i put a call across to the government of my state, telling him about my proposed project, they responded positively and promised to help, but at the dying minutes, they send me a mail that my project was not budgeted for. It was such a frustrating moment for me, but I promise myself, I was not going to quit.
Immediately, I sprang into action, put a call across to friends and family, ask for volunteers, and to the glory of God, cash donations were sent across and i made sure i came up with a powerful campaign that was so impactful.
Like i said earlier, i don't work alone, most of my projects are done, using the community leaders and local chiefs, they play a key role in ensuring their subjects are called to order.
I always make sure i engage the services of those who are qualified to handle or partner with, this helps to ensure greater outcome.
One of my favourite experience was my ability to engage in peace process of the two warring communities.
I achieved this through several meetings with the village head and community leaders.
I provided a borehole facility for this same displaced community to ensure they have a good drinking water, and alleviate their sufferings.
- Nonprofit
What makes my project innovative and impactful is my ability to change the mentality of the rural public from living in denial of the presence of corona virus in our community, to embracing the laid down safety measures by the government.
My covid 19 awareness campaign has help in teaching the people who were totally ignorant of the dangers of the virus, how to maintain a sustainable healthy lifestyle.
Palliatives sharing on the other hand has helped to reduce hunger, while giving hope to the beneficiaries , that there's someone somewhere who cares about them.
They collectively showed some high level of love and appreciation.
My sanitization programe outcome is expected to change the perception of people about safety consciousness while reducing the dangers of increasing deads due to corona virus pandemic.
sharing of palliatives to the poor widows and single mothers in terms of food, sanitizers, liquid soap and cash was to reduce hunger.
Provision of borehole for the people of Udung okung community has immensely improve safety living in this community.
The borehole has reduced the suffering of the rural dwellers who had to walk for quite a distance to fetch their drinking water, and it's the best gift you can give any community at this pandemic era . It is a well known fact that, constant washing of hands with soap and water is an important measures for staying safe at this pandemic era, the very reason we included liquid soaps as one of the items we shared out as palliatives.

currently, my covid 19 sanitation campaign project covers 5 local govt of oron federal constituency, and so, approximately , over 500,000 people were covered, and is still covering through jingles announcement.
the second phase of the campaign which was specifically targeted at widows and singe mothers had about 550 widows and 100 single mothers in attendance.
In one year from now, we intend to double these current number.
in five years time , we will be serving thousands of global public.
this will be possible if we are financially enabled.
My goals for the next one year basically is to ensure that the poor and displaced Udung Okung community are provided with the basic life sustaining facilities to improve their livelihood.
This will start by providing desk to the community schools, providing them with a moderate bathroom and toilet facilities too. These were their most pressing request to me.
My long term goals is engaging the widows and single mothers in basic skills acquisition programmes. This is to ensure they have a sustainable means of livelihood.
Also, I am currently working on a yearly essay competition, this will help us place the winners on a scholarship scheme, through to tertiary level. This scholarship project is intended to span through many years.
The most important aspect of my goal is in its sustainability and dependability.
Basically, financing these projects are the major challenges to me.
Another major challenge i have is satisfying and spreading these essential projects to go round every community as should be.
We also have vehicular problems in view of the fact that, most of what i do requires movement to the interior villages, these villages have very poor road networks, and so we do have to rent some big trucks to achieve our goals. Also, items like public address systems are rented along side the trucks needed to convey them.
Also, some communities can be very frustrating due to illiteracy level and the feeling that, you must touch lives individually, or you haven't done enough, so in this case, I use the community and youth leaders to bring them to order.
I have provided a borehole facility to the displaced community of Udung okung.
I've provideddesk to a primary school in Udesi village, where students were sitting on the bare floor to learn, thereby falling sick all the time.
I have provided palliatives for the widows and single mothersin this covid 19 era.
I have been campaigning to educate the people on the dangers of corona virus, and I'm still working on campaigns.
All these are done through community engagement, donations from friends and kind hearted individuals.
My key beneficiaries are the poor, men, women and children.
I am hoping someday, i will be able to get some funds through grants and every other legal means to fund my proposed projects.
No funds has been raised for now.
Looking forward to your support please.
I am praying for a minimum grant of at least two hundred thousand US dollars ($200,000) .
This will help me achieve some of my long term project plans.
