Integrating sports in the lives of corporate 9-5 employees
sports, health, mental stability, productivity, motivation, net working hours, better quality of life, less medical issues,cost-benefit studies
1- Technology has taken over our lives in the most aggressive way in all aspects of our daily interactions. Although this was meant to make our lives easier with less stress, however in many cases the opposite has happened. I believe that when an employee's physical and mental health are compromised, it costs the employer more money and effort to rectify that on several levels. I aim to propose a solution in efforts to mitigate these costs and minimize the need for it altogether.
2- I believe that implementing an athletic-corporate program in workplaces can and will have positive effects on the issue mentioned above. Allowing for mandatory exercise time within working hours as well as providing the logistical means for that to take place will add to the employee's overall productivity, will decrease his/her overall stress levels, will decrease chances for physical and mental illnesses that will in turn decrease the corporation's need to cater to medical insurance requests from sick employees with overall productivity issues. When an employee feels that the corporation he/she are working for care for their physical and mental stability, this will derive more motivation to provide the employer with higher levels of commitment and productivity levels. Regular physical activity on a daily basis ensures elongated physical and mental health versus being in a sedentary inactive state.
3- The benefits of sports are literally endless and are all positive, however the biggest impact in my opinion is that sports induce 'happy hormones' like endorphins and create a sense of overall satisfaction and accomplishment. Sports are a wonderful way to deal with daily frustrations or stress. When an employer has happier healthier more relaxed employees, the quality of the services or goods they provide the corporation with in turn will be increased. And adversely the amount of money corporate companies pay to cater to their employee's health bills will decrease. Creating healthier content employees globally will have positive effects on the entire world eventually.
- Human + Machine
Up until now balancing sports into a typical hectic 9-5 job including the commute hours and having to run a family contributes to adding stress more than relieving mainly because it is done outside of working hours. If employees are forced to take an "exercise break" every day, daily stress will go down significantly. When a person knows that they will be able to fit an exercise program within their working day as part of their basic employee rights/benefits, the motivation to be more committed to this job/employer will increase as will the overall health of that person.
This solution requires the assistance of technology to a good extent. Depending on the available work-space of course, but I would say having a treadmill/elliptical/stationary bike to be used in a rotation among colleagues on the same floor/office space with a flat screen TV and wireless headphones or of course having a fully functional gym along with a plan with the HR and the relevant departments to implement a proper work-out plan should be sufficient.
