Dissolve the danger
The main problem we are trying to solve is the disposal of medical waste as we know it is a big problem to reduce the incidence of health workers. Our idea is mainly based on a mixture of acids (hydrochloric and nitric acid) and ferric chloride to dissolve medical waste (sharps and plastics). The system is a two-story building. The first floor is dedicated to waste disposal. The second contains an "acid recovery system" to purify the acid after saturating with impurities residue. To filter the fumes that are produced during the acid purification process, a "wet layer cleaning device" is used. If the solution is developed globally, it will save millions of dollars and millions of people. Our solution protects the planet in the long run, according to the SDGs.
Our challenge is disposing of the medical wastes (sharps) in a correct way to decrease infection rates with diseases. The scale of this problem is global, as many health care wastes have wounds and puncture needles annually are approximately 500-7300 workers globally. From the factors contributing to the problem related to our solution is that the traditional disposal methods are ending as a small amount of other wastes that could be very dangerous as the ash containing a high concentration of heavy metals, our solution overcome that by using the acid recovery system to recover the acids. Another factor is the occurrence of the problems of many infections among health workers. So by using our solution, that is automatic and protects them from being infected. The solution also is decreasing the spread of COVID-19 and pandemics in general through the wastes to health workers.
The idea is a complete system for the disposal of medical wastes (sharps and plastics) to slow down the spread of any pandemics and supporting the health workers as the system works automatically and the human resources in this system are managing it without being exposed to danger of being infected. The system is dissolving the wastes in a mixture of acids (one-part nitric acid, two parts of hydrochloric acid, water and ferric chloride) in a Pyrex container. The building where our system will be placed in is two-floor building, the second one is dedicated to dissolve the waste, first one has an acid recovery system and an extra water source to purify the acid after saturation with wastes. Above the roof of the building a vertical acid scrubber is placed to filter the air from the fumes could be generated during the dissolving process. The technology used in our project is AI, programming languages and Mechatronics to make our project working automatically.
The target populations are the health workers who meaningfully improved by protecting them from infection from any pandemics. We did a survey to take opinions of health workers in our project to know their needs, link: https://forms.office.com/Pages...
Our solution is entirely user-centered; right from the initial phases of development, the health workers have been involved as they were given a form asking them, our project does not result in another waste that could infect them with diseases as occur in the incineration process that results in ash with heavy metals, and the process of dissolving is faster.
Our problem is medical waste. Since the negligence in disposing of it gives an opportunity to some merchants to sell them again, as happened in India in 2004, and this was responsible for the loss of many lives. It is also one of the causes of HIV / hepatitis epidemic transmission and the spread of epidemics. Our solution is to use specific acids types in an integrated system for dissolving medical waste and final disposal. This relates to the challenge, as solutions are required to prevent the spread of epidemics and diseases and to maintain public health

- A new technology
First, as we know the health care wastes is a huge problem so, we decided to solve it. And during the searches, we find many ways that made to get rid of it. Such as the burning process is widespread, but it is hazardous. Because the toxic gases that came out from it and the ach that is toxic too. In the study in Morocco, 16 samples of hospital waste ash were collected from the crematoria of the two leading hospitals in Rabat: Ibn Sina and Sheikh Zaid. A series of tests were performed, including particle size distribution, mineral, and chemical composition, and heavy metal filtration behavior. The results showed that the samples consist mainly of P2O5 (18%), SiO2 (17%), Na2O (16%), CaO (14%), and SO3 (10%). Some of these substances are dangerous and are classified as carcinogens, so the roasting process is hazardous to the human and the environment. So we make a new solution to rid the health care wastes by using the acid instead of burning as the acid is cheaper than burning because we use the acid recovery system, and his process is filtration the acid to use it again. We use another filter for the air to filtration it from the toxic gases that came out during the process, so our project is very safe to the human and environment. And this is the only project that using the acid to rid the medical wastes.
Technology is essential in our project, as the project depends on multiple devices which are:
- the acid recovery system (Diffusion Dialysis Systems), and its task is to purify the acid after using it to recycle from waste. This has a significant economic role, as this may save in the amount of acid required to complete the process because it may make us use the acid more than once.
- The other device is Wet packed bed scrubber would use to filter the toxic gases that produced from the process. We used acid scrubber (Wet packed bed scrubber).
- We also will use Hydraulic Claw Crane to catch the sharps and put them in the glass container.
- We will use the PIR Sensor, an electronic sensor that measures infrared (IR) light radiating from objects in its field of view. They are most often used in PIR-based motion detectors. We will put it in the door to sense the vehicle in the event of approaching, and then the door is opened for entry.
- We will use AI for regulating the system
- Automatic technology: would be used in acid path gate to be opened when the acid saturated with waste impurities.
The filtration system we use in our system is vertical acid scrubber (Wet packed bed scrubber) is a proven technology to filter the fumes that emits from acids

The problem we are solving has many dimensions. One of the most important aspects that we focus on in the solution is the third goal in the goals of sustainable development, which is concerned with good health, as the problem affects public health significantly. Medical waste helps the spread of infectious diseases and serious diseases such as hepatitis and AIDS. Our project also seeks to preserve Workers in the pharmaceutical sector where we rely on technology more than human labor in our solution, as well as the thirteenth goal in the goals of sustainable development, which is centered around the climate, is contributing to eliminating climate change through the use of our project to dispose of medical waste where the widespread solution is the use of incinerators and incinerators Great risks, the most important of which are greenhouse gases and the toxic gases they produce, such as methane and carbon dioxide. So, the activities of the project have longer-term outcomes for the target population. From our aims is ending the life cycle of the wastes to decrease the infection rates unlike the incineration process that generate ashes with high concentrations of heavy metals that represent a more dangerous waste, our project had addressed that by using the acid recovery system to recover the acid after being saturated with impurities of residues. And there is a relation between the economy and the project because the project provides a tremendous economic return to the country.

Our goal for the next year is targeting Egypt for applying our idea. And that because Egypt is one of the countries most affected by the problem of medical waste. We will endeavor to do so by communicating with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Health to support and finance our project and promote our idea on social media. For the next five years we are looking for expansion applies our idea to other affected countries, such as India, for example. Medical waste problem is dangerous, and it threatens the lives of millions of people and the environment. A large 2004 study by the Indian Clinical Epidemiology Network found that more than 30% of the 3–6 billion injections administered each year were done with used equipment. The study also revealed that in almost 10% of health facilities nationwide, used syringes and needles were sold off to waste-pickers. WHO says millions of cases of hepatitis and tens of thousands of HIV infections could be prevented each year if syringe needles were disposed of safely instead of getting reused without sterilization. It says radioactive medical waste killed four people in Brazil in 1988, and similar accidents occurred before then in Algeria, Mexico and Morocco.
We are having problems getting work experience on this project. For example, in Egypt, we do not have an abundance of experts dealing with acids and many of the experiences we need in implementing the project. We are also facing financial problems because our idea is costing. This is a large sum for some developing countries. Although our project provides about () if six units are implemented against six units of PVC factories in Egypt, for example, the required amount is a relatively problematic, due to the budget allocated by some developing countries for the medical sector that needs to be increased.
About the problem of lack of expertise, the expertise we need in a significant way, we plan to start first with our projects with available expertise. In the future, we can seek the help of partners from outside the country or partners working on our project, but in a different country. The financial problems facing us for some developing countries, we are planning to request aid from business-men who are interested in our project field, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Environment, and possibly international organizations concerned with the environment and health, given the severe impact of the problem on both sides.
- Not registered as any organization
It has been our interest in this project to protect workers from the risks that may result from dealing with acid or medical waste. So we have designed our project to have most of its tasks done automatically, the project will need a supervisor and his assistant, and they switch together, and their tasks are to control the operating system from a distance, organize it and solve any problem if there is, and also the process needs delegates)drivers) to collect medical waste from hospitals and send them to the nearest place that has this system (project) and they work part-time.
Our idea relies heavily on supporting institutions and organizations where the World Health Organization, for example, plays an important role and great importance, as this organization builds hospitals and treatment places in some countries to be the first supporter of our project in terms of financial support, as well as the Ministry of Health in countries that This project will be created in it will be of great importance because it may lead to financial support or facilities or a law to prevent and criminalize disposal of medical waste and forcing hospitals to give it to representatives of waste collection for disposal in our project system, where the World Health Organization can succeed this experiment as it is with policies To bring in investors for the project, they can provide the necessary tools at a much lower cost, also in the UK, they have created a complete and comprehensive system for dealing with medical waste and disposal in a highly organized way d - according to the Environmental Protection Act. As well as ministries that are interested in the environment and institutions and organizations that are interested in the field of our idea in the countries in which we will create our project.
Our solution impact is saving money spent on the other disposal ways, spent less time, and avoid spreading the COVID-19 and other pandemics.
The hive benefactions are the hospitals, Non-Government Organizations seeking to procure quality maternal health supplies and Governments. while our customers are the Health Ministry, Environmental Ministry, World Health Organization, Swedish International Development organization, and Department for International Development.
Our Value propositions are that the reduction rate in the price compared to PVC stations in Egypt with 13% for one installment, better performance as it is faster and more efficient, works automatically, so it does not need many health workers, which lead to protect and support them. We shall access our customers through the following channels: Global distribution through our key partners (American International Health Alliance (AIHA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Department for International Development, Swedish International Development organization); Advertisement through Medical equipment/supplies companies. They need them to solve the problem of infections of many health workers. Revenue streams of the hive are the fixed cost model: One-time installment cost + consumables (recurring). Pay-as-you-go model: One-time deposit at installment + Per test revenue sharing.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
Commercial financing is the most essential thing in any project, especially if the project is big, expensive, valuable, and international like our project. So, these projects must have financial sustainability; as we said, be these kinds of projects are essential, so his activity can’t stop suddenly. The economic sustainability comes from many sources such as government (The ministry of environment and the ministry of health) and the private sector companies that owned by businessmen. The best sponsor is the government because it is more reliable than the private sector, and it will be more accessible to the users (health care facilities) to get the futures of our project for free because funded by the government.
We are applying to SOLVE as we want “dissolve the danger” to become an end-to-end solution. To achieve that, we will need mentors from various disciplines because of our solution cuts across clinical, public health, technological, and operational lines. We are confident of receiving such mentoring from Solve’s diverse cross-sector community as it is an excellent platform for us to reach out to potential partners who will join us in our mission- to dispose of the medical wastes (sharps) without exposing the health workers to many risks they deal with daily. Mentoring is crucial as we aim to commercially validate an automated preterm birth prediction system over the next year, and we want to avoid making technical and operational mistakes. The funding is from the barriers that we believe that SOLVE can help us overcome. We would apply for the AI for Humanity, BMGF Award, and the Health Worker Innovation Award as they closely relate to our work in maternal and fetal/neonatal health in India's challenging settings since 2015. If we receive funding through these prizes, we can expand our technological team to recruit more AI, Machine Learning, Data mining, and Statistics, to strengthen our outcome analysis. The Hive hopes to establish linkages with potential partners and network at the Solve 2020 event to increase funding.

Our goals from partnership summarize instability, development, Sustainable, and get knowledge. Become more stable is essential to build a successful organization, Bec. This point is Important to evolve the organization in the right way during the stable time—development to grow our project in the situation of competitive in the market. From our goals also is money to complete this project or to act in emergency situations. Also, economic funding will help us to make some changes in the future and improvement. Mainly in this phase, we are looking forward to getting experts in this field to give their suggestions and money to build real station of this project in 2021.
The phase of the partnership is essential to do an astounding project and have benefited at a low cost and exchanges our experiences. Our project is needed a very expert organization or company, and the process of selection is very difficult due to extreme competition between them and the huge numbers of their offers. Actually, our CFO is worked hard to choose the most effective and appropriate one for us. The first one is the World Health Organization, Bec. It did a lot of researches about our project field, and it will support us with their knowledge in this field. Department for International Development is from the most effective organization for funding and support the projects that related to health and medicine. It can help us on the economic side (buy devices, liquids, and other equipment). Swedish International Development organization it’s interested in many fields. It can help us on the economic side or help us publicize this project for global demand (In addition to publicizing in Egypt will be done by national companies like “Flix org” or “Fekra for Advertising”). All of these organizations are preliminary choices that can change during time or situations.
The main target that we try to get it is how to create a safe and harmless project for both the environment and people. And we get it because the project will keep the workers safe and it is will It will reduce the spread of infection. It does not leave harmful residue behind.
We have a strong vision of the use of artificial intelligence in the gate designated to pass the acid to the acid recovery system after ensuring that it is saturated with medical waste impurities. We will use artificial intelligence to calculate the saturation of acids with waste impurities and predict when we will need to transfer the acids to an acid recovery system and employ new acids. We will also use artificial intelligence to develop the acid mixture later to obtain a higher efficiency for our project. Also, the intervention of artificial intelligence will preserve the lives of the experts, a look at the danger of direct dealing with that mixture of acids and ensuring more accurate proportions. Artificial intelligence technology has been employed to provide the best efficiency from our project as well as sustainability.
The People's awards are an American awards show. They recognize people in entertainment and voted online by the general public and fans. The show has been held annually since 1975, with the winners determined initially using Gallup Polls until the switch to online voting in 2005. This award is one of our interests. Of course, we hope to win it. We must run for the award because our project aims to serve the environment and society and protect individuals from diseases caused by medical waste. Therefore, we helped the environment, health, and the state's budget on the other level, considering that the state spent a lot in the incinerators and others to get rid of waste. However, our project is a lot less budgeted.
our project needs financial resource to make the full system. Our project has an impact on many people especially health workers and our solution is more reduction in the price as compared to market options and it also works automatically that could support the workers and . This award is one of our interests. Of course, we hope to win it to could install it.
