Survenus
Every year infectious diseases outbreaks kill more than 6 Million people and cause losses of Billion of Dollars to world economies, showing no signs of slowing down. Survenus is a web platform that aggregates all the meaningful information, available in hundreds of data sources, about disease outbreaks and related environmental and socioeconomical factors, acting as the single layer for analytics, simulation and forecast of their evolution and risks associated, removing uncertainty from outbreak management and increasing our understanding and resiliency as a society.
Nowadays, infectious diseases continue to kill millions of people and causing billions in losses every year, mainly because after all these centuries, we are still acting reactively and slowly. Our understanding about how outbreaks start and evolve is still limited, because we still act isolated. Infectious diseases don’t respect geographical boundaries or the same rules as humans, so as long as decision makers keep acting based on small and non-representative information, this reality won’t change. There is the need to build a centralized platform that can aggregate all the data possible, from different entities, cultures and countries, so that tracking and predicting outbreaks, may be become true and we can finally be proactive and turn the odds in our favour.
Survenus is a web platform that aggregates all the meaningful information, available in hundreds of data sources spread across the world without any standardisation, about disease outbreaks and related environmental and socio-economical factors. After the data gathering process, Big data techniques and state of the art machine learning algorithms are applied, to organise and extract meaningful insights from it.
The platform provides several features that fit different use-cases: a news feed where all the situation reports are published as soon as they become available, a GIS integration where it is possible to visualise and compare the situation in different geographical locations, an analytics dashboard where raw case data can be analysed and a simulator where forecast and scenario simulations can be performed, creating a single repository of information and making it possible, for the first time, to really understand how outbreaks behave and evolve, without the need for any human intervention in the process, increasing responsiveness and supporting decision making processes.
Survenus is meant to serve every single human being in the world!
Nowadays, we provide the tools and insights necessary for organisations, health agencies and governmental bodies, to define proactive strategies and implement the necessary measures to fight infectious diseases outbreaks and mitigate their effects worldwide.
The platform is being developed with feedback from those entities so that we can maximize it's impact.
Survenus is the exact answer to question "how can communities around the world prepare for, detect emerging pandemics and health security threats?" presented by the Challenge, because it leverages data, from hundreds of different sources, to extract patterns and insights that serve as an early warning system to health emergencies, allowing communities around the world to prepare and mitigate their effects. Additionally it allows competent authorities to track the evolution of those events, giving them an indispensable tool to manage the measures taken and quantify its impact in society.
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community
- A new technology
Survenus is disseminating knowledge, enabling decision makers to take the necessary actions to save lives and reduce the effects of epidemics on national economies. Additionally, this knowledge empowers scientists around the globe to push our understanding of diseases and how we relate with them.
At the centre of this revolution is automation and artificial intelligence, enabling the processing huge amounts of data every day and the extraction of insights without any human intervention, something not possible until now.
At its lower level, our platform uses of a distributed data processing system, which enables the collection, organisation, pre-processing and storage of all the data being monitored. It then uses a scheduler and several machine learning frameworks to train our proprietary models and perform automated testing. After finalised and validated by humans, the new models are made available through an inference server, that manages the underlying infrastructure and ensures, not only performance but also efficiency.
All the data is then made available through a web application, that incorporates several different visualisation tools, a notification system and afeed.
The platform core engine makes use of an Adversarial Ensemble to analyse the collected data and analyse it from different perspectives and planes. This ensemble is constituted by 5 different models, based on classical machine learning algorithms and modern neural networks, providing an in-depth analysis of specific listed features at the same it provides enough room to accommodate data variability. To support the platform, we make use of different tools like Tensorflow, Kafka and Docker.

Survenus is currently serving a few dozen of people, since we are currently starting our first pilots. In one year, we expect to have impact in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, after we close our first contract with a national health agency.
In 5 years, we expect to be working with at least 30 countries and other private organisations, aiding in the protection dozens of millions of citizens everyday.
Our goal for the next year is to establish ourselves in the market and at least double our global coverage. We intend to start working with several private organisations and at least one public health authority.
The next five years will mark the establishment period, with Survenus achieving global coverage and becoming a standard, working with market leaders in the private sector and most countries in the world.
During the next year, the biggest barriers we will face are closing the investment financing round and start working with our first governmental customer, due to bureaucracy and slow adoption rate.
In the next five years, our ambition to achieve global coverage will certainly bring cultural barriers and technical issues, due to outdated systems in some countries and the lack of standardization worldwide.
To close our investment round, we will invest the necessary effort and use the accumulated experience to ensure Survenus investment readiness.
To decrease governmental barriers, we will work with our partner network to facilitate the process and accelerate the adoption.
To ensure that cultural problems will not arise, we intend to hire locals in specific geographies.
To ensure that technical problems will not have impact on our roadmap, we will develop a training plan for all of our software team, that will follow the needs of the organisation.

Mauro is a technologist with more than 12 years of experience in the development, management and deployment of software systems at scale in several companies. In 2016, he co-founded Heptasense(heptasense.com), a top European AI Startup, where he was responsible for compliance and the development of the award winning platform. In 2019, he finished his GDPR certification in Catolica Lisbon, before he founded Survenus.
We are currently partnering with a Portuguese insurance company. We are also in conversations with the largest insurance market in the world.
We charge organisations, a monthly subscription fee, for the access to the Survenus platform. This fee is variable and is based on the geographical coverage necessary and the plan chosen by each entity. Different plans provide access to different features and different data granularity for the covered area.
Additionally, Survenus also charges consulting fees in specific cases and projects.
- Organizations (B2B)
We have a recurrent business model with a monthly subscription that we predict will enable long-term growth and sustainability. Until we reach that maturity stage, we need financing to sustain our growth and expenses, and that is why we intend to raise investment capital. It will enable us to focus on our vision and execute our strategy, given that relying on donations and grants, while representing a huge help, is also quite unpredictable and risky.
Integrating the Solve community, will help Survenus connect to other partner organisations that share the same ambition to eradicate disease outbreaks, and extend it's reach globally, enabling cooperation across continents and sparking the growth of the company.
- Product/service distribution
We look for meaningful partners that can help Survenus grow as an organisation. Cooperation in scientific research and data sharing, partners in distribution and dissemination, organisations interested in using the platform and connection with regulation bodies are some of the partnership goals we have.
- Private organisations that want to become customers (insurance, pharma, medical products, consultancy firms)
- Health agencies and governmental bodies
