CareMother- KAWACH
During pandemic essential services of pregnancy and childcare are affected. Recent LANCET publication also mentioned possible significant increase in mortalities due to lack of pregnancy care services. 1500+ expecting mothers and 20+ hospitals we spoke during the lockdown gave us insights on issues. Technology solutions that address issues of access to services and information are most coveted at this time. “Mother-KAWACH” is a call to action software plugin for pregnant women, parents, online communities, hospitals and other healthcare providers, to address the above mentioned problems through a mobile app, web platform and a helpline number. KAWACH (meaning SHIELD) and is an acronym for “Know-how & risk assessment, What not to miss, Awareness on self-care, Childcare and finding a safe Hospital for delivery’. Mother-Kawach being a software plugin can scale globally quickly through partners and online presence.
In our experience of working closely with pregnant women over the last few months during the country wide lockdown, we have obtained valuable insights on the impact on expecting mothers and the extent of their vulnerability. Interactions with over a 1500 pregnant women in the last 3 months through both offline and online communication channels we understood that mothers with access to smart phones were worried about common pregnancy related morbidities and how to manage them from home; sought advice on investigations to be conducted and / or interpretation of test results. With mothers living in tribal areas and urban slums, almost half the queries were on myths and misconceptions related to Covid-19. About a third were confused and unaware of which hospital facility they could visit for delivery. More than half were not following the required nutrition and care for their pregnancy.
The problem we are trying to solve is the limited availability of essential health services and medical advice for pregnancy and child care in the time of Covid, the anxiety experienced by pregnant women and parents for the safety of the mother and baby, and absence of authentic information channel on the disease and on keeping safe.

“Mother-KAWACH” is a call to action software plugin and is meant for pregnant women, parents, online communities, hospitals and other healthcare providers. 'KAWACH' means shield in Hindi and is an acronym for:
A) Know-how - info on COVID-19, specifically for pregnant women, including “Don’t Panic- Protect” video series by a leading Gynaecologist
B) Assessment - AI-based risk assessment tool for COVID
B) What not to miss during pregnancy including essential tests that should be done, mandatory immunizations and doctor consultations, customised for every user based on their expected date of delivery
C) Awareness of self-care practices, dos and donts, and self-care kit based on the expected date of delivery
D) Childcare: Information on how to keep the newborn baby/ child safe from Coronavirus, necessary vaccinations and guidelines based on the child’s age
E) Hospital with a safe mark near me: Map of the safe-marked birthing facilities near users using GPS location.
KAWACH tool will easily integrate with health services, including a web plugin for service providers using AI-NLP (Dialogue flow); USSD service for feature phones; and an API library to integrate with mobile app. The tool will engage with mothers directly to inform, advise and support.

Our solution serves the following customer groups:
a) Expecting mothers and parents
b) Hospitals and online communities of parents
c) National and international NGOs and government
Mother KAWACH has been designed based on the needs of these groups, and in consultation with our partners. The tool is aimed at ensuring continuity of care for pregnant women and babies, with access to authentic information, support and advice. The software plugin will allow access to information on Covid, with video content such a series by an experienced Ob/Gyn on pregnancy care and myth busters during Covid. AI based risk assessment tool will allow mothers to screen for Covid symptoms and take action early. The guide on 'what not to miss' will inform users on essential tests and vaccinations that pregnant women and newborn must take as per their stage/age. Content in the form of videos and articles on self care along with home care devices that can be used for self-monitoring will be available for pregnant women. Moreover, a list of hospitals near the user that are safe for delivery will be available to support mothers and avoid difficulties in hospital access when in labour.
Mother KAWACH fits in effectively as a solution that focuses on preventative and mitigation measures that strengthen access to affordable primary healthcare systems during the pandemic, and impacts all stakeholders of a health system. Target group of pregnant women and new born are most vulnerable during the epidemic given the disruption in MCH services because of reallocation of resources towards Covid related surveillance, control and treatment. Mother KAWACH can be an effective tool to inform, educate, guide and advice mothers and parents on preventive aspects and avoid emergency situations, while allowing optimal use of health providers and health care institutions.
- Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in one or, ideally, several communities, which is poised for further growth
- A new application of an existing technology
Mother Kawach is a unique solution which solves the current problem of expecting mothers beyond just information. It’s Call-to-Action nature provides direct outcome to the questions expectant mothers have, e.g. what not to miss in particular weeks during a pandemic is shared once they enter the expected date of delivery. Such a comprehensive solution in simplest form which can be offered from any website, USSD(feature phone) and app is not available currently. There are several mobile and tech applications already in use by governments in India and by individuals on MCH and specific to Covid. However integrating these apps with existing technology solutions is always a challenge. A software plugin in the other hand solves this issue by allowing users to access information through a website or their phone.
Self Monitoring Kit we offer covers the deep aspects of ANC and fetal monitoring which are accepted by doctors as their standard practice. It also auto-interprets the results using AI which is appreciated by family and doctors both.
Value Proposition:
1. Do it yourself software and kit for expecting mother and partner avoiding hospital visits and infection fear
2. Safe Hospital near the user to know place for delivery
3. Increased outcome of virtual consultation with health parameters data and revenue
4. Support during panic situation and emergency

Mother-Kawach offers simple and conversational interface for expecting mothers and family using AI/ML (Natural Language Processing) with Google's Dialogflow. This also makes Mother-Kawach accessible from various platforms. Example of what not to miss during a particular week of pregnancy during pandemic is informed to mothers in simplest form: https://fetosense-alpha.firebaseapp.com/#/tools. At backend it uses firebase from google.
Under self care component of Mother Kawach, we offer an android app for expecting mothers and parents along with wireless self monitoring fetal doppler. We have built our own algorithms and interface for a test called Non-Stress test for fetal monitoring. It is an improvement on our existing product "fetosense" which is built for clinics and home visits. In self-monitoring auto interpretation is provided along with link to physicians.
Mother Kawach onboards clinics/hospitals on CareMother platform. It hosts these clinics with safety mark based on their standard practices. This will help users to find the nearest facility for delivery which is safe during pandemic. Further this will enable clinics/hospitals earn revenue by supporting self monitoring expecting mothers and parents.
Our solution primarily works on technology base of Android, Flutter, Firebase and Dialogflow. All of them are open source and hence widely available.
Fetosense: wireless doppler for fetal monitoring is already functional and 2019's MIT Solve winner as well. We have deployed 60+ clinics in last 8 months.https://caremother.in/offering/fetosensehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPis8PALD_o&feature=emb_logo

The Problem:
The problem we are trying to solve is the limited availability of essential health services and medical advice for pregnancy and child care in the time of Covid, the anxiety experienced by pregnant women and parents for the safety of the mother and baby, and absence of authentic information channel on the disease and on keeping safe.
The Solution:
CareMother is an innovative pregnancy care solution is aimed at ensuring quality care for every pregnancy. Meant for last mile care delivery by frontline health workers, CareMother has benefited over 40,000 pregnant women till date, trained 250+ health workers and partnered with over 25 health care organisations in a span of 5 years. With the onset of Coronavirus in India and restricted doorstep health services, we improvised our solution as CareMother Kawach that ensures continuity of care for pregnant women and parents by providing remote access to information and medical advice, and empowering mothers to care for themselves. Being a plugin software solution it allows access from the web and integrates easily with existing health systems and apps, thereby being inclusive in coverage and reach.
The Elevate Prize will enable us to develop our solution and forge the partnerships with hospitals and health care organisations required to reach our target customers. It will also help us obtain the expertise required and the strategic support to develop relevant content and support the health system with remote care options for pregnant women and parents.

The AI for Humanity Prize will be used to develop our Kawach solution and contextualise to the area being served. Being a plugin software and the design allow it to be used widely across any geography, hence we will use the support to scale our solution in global south, where pregnant women face similar situation of a disrupted health system and lack of antenatal care.
We will use the support to expand our team to bring in experts in required technology area, content developers and marketing experts to reach our target customer group. We aim to reach a million pregnant women and parents after the initial pilot phase.
Mother Kawach is aimed at pregnant and lactating women that have been rendered vulnerable during the pandemic, and aims to reach 1million women and parents in the couple of years.
Pregnant women and parents living in rural and tribal parts of India, and in urban slums are particularly vulnerable during this pandemic. Their dependence on the government health system for antenatal and post natal care is high, and is an unserved need in this time, when most resources are being re-directed towards Covid-19 prevention, testing and treatment. They are left without any source of health care and are progressing through their pregnancy without the mandatory antenatal care. Research has shown that only 21% of pregnant women in India receive basic antenatal care (IFA, 4 ANC check up and immunisation) and during a pandemic this is further reduced due to non-availability of health workers owing to the lockdown and health centres being inaccessible for regular services.
