Pandemic Index Generator
We are solving the issue of ill preparedness and lack of direction when dealing with pandemics. Our solution is an algorithm with a series of three sequential sub-level algorithms that provide a virus threat level along with characteristics, necessary and recommended protocols, and a comprehensive plan. Each of these will be dependent upon the characteristics of the virus and the country in question. If this solution were to be implemented across the globe, not only would every country be aware of how dangerous and/or the virus is, they will also have a plan and all the necessary information to facilitate necessary countermeasures as well as a plan by which they can operate to minimize the number of cases and deaths.
The specific problem I am solving is the lack of preparation, proper allocation of resources, and planning in response to pandemics. From the local hospitals that lack basic resources such as masks to entire nations failing to institute proper procedure in a timely matter, it has become all too evident that there needs to be a more efficient and accurate method of counteracting pandemics. Due to a lacking system, people all over the globe have been affected both medically, socially, and economically. Examples can be found in COVID-19. Countries such as South Korea were preemptive in their countermeasures and thus were able to mitigate the number of cases and deaths. The United Kingdom suffered from a high number of cases, however, due to proper planning, was able to maintain a stable economy. Countries such as Italy and the United states failed to take such measures in time. With the Pandemic Index Generator, such consequences could have been avoided or at the very least, lessened.
This solution is essentially an algorithm. You input data regarding factors such as demographics, population density, methods of transmission, observable symptoms, and death rates and the algorithm will output first, a virus threat level that will be in the category between 1-5. From this point one would enter the threat level and the country concerned and from this point forward the algorithm extends a detailed plan that addresses how countries ought to respond to a pandemic or the threat of a pandemic over time. This algorithm will take into account available facilities for care and research, populations at risk, available resources, and possible economic impacts among a host of other factors to create a personalized and realistic plan for each and every country.
By definition, a pandemic is potentially a global threat. In that sense, this solution serves everybody as it will help them to prepare for and deal with a pandemic threat with a comprehensive plan which will firstly streamline the process by which countries will address the issue, and second, will overall mitigate the chances of large scale death.
The challenge at hand is not necessarily, how does one cure a virus, but how does one address a pandemic? This solution addresses that problem. By first creating a threat level then creating a plan that is based off a country’s available resources and demographics rather than models from countries that were successful in staving off a massive outbreak, but could be fundamentally different. The fact that the target population is everybody, but that the whole population will be judged on a specific and needs based scale rather than a universal model guarantees the most efficient answer.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea
- A new application of an existing technology
What makes this solution innovative is that it utilizes existing technology to create an unprecedented system. Whilst it is the case that countries know about viruses and patterns, in addition to having set procedures in the event of a pandemic, simply put there is no set methodology, much less such an efficient means of coming to one. Standard solutions are usually plans that are designed for countries to counter specific viruses either based on precedent or models from other countries. This algorithm takes it a step beyond. Essentially it is the question of whether we give a man a fish, or we teach him to fish. By compiling all the knowledge into a database then picking ideal information based on specifics of a virus, a Pandemic Index Generator (PIG) solution has the advantage of creating the most optimal solution within the shortest amount of time. This time is invaluable in both preparation and action against the virus. In addition, by creating a system of threat levels, it becomes far more simple for both people and governments to understand the level of danger, and thus will either alleviate unnecessary panic or provide a clear and solid measurement as to the gravity of the situation.
The core technology that powers my solution is artificial intelligence with simulation based analysis.
One example of this technology would be weather prediction programs. These programs take in information from external databases to structure an environment and once certain factors are inputted by meteorologists, they create a prediction based on the inputted information to come up with a model. This is the technology that was used to design the Lorentz effect.

The solution is still in its conceptual stages and thus it does not serve anyone, within one year and five years however, it will benefit everyone infected or at risk of being infected in the event of a pandemic, and far afterwards as well as it will contribute to economic stability as well.
Our primary barriers are that of funding and expertise. The latter may be acquired via the former, which would greatly aid in verification and accuracy in each step of the algorithm.
