Misinformation and disinformation pose a challenge to development, governance, public health, and human security efforts around the world Kijiji Cha Amani is a workflow and technology platform designed to counter the spread of false information through transparency and early mitigation of conflict in North Kivu, DRC. After receive good information, the village in high tension of conflicts took decision to make safe their life. In disease cases,  We are reducing their ability to follow rumors against health workers.

In North, The number of armed groups has increased 80. For the last 20 months, eastern Congo has been fighting the longest and most complex Ebola epidemic in DRC’s history. It has also been the most lethal, killing 2,276 people, COVID-19 disease appeared in March and we have now 5 cases. Health workers became targets and the capture of resources allocated by the international community became an objective of militian groups. 

The population estimated at more than 5.8 million habitats could be the basis for producing true information to alert in time the security services and health workers. 

The province has more than 10 ethnic groups which live since 1994 under tensions, prejudices and violence until creating armed groups for self-defense having for source The Rumors and the bad information.

We collect rumors and alerts from our 110 peace zones by our community ambassadors from telephone SMS via a free number available, a whatsapp or our facebook page. We think about the verification process and then come back to the person in good time and see if they can take the necessary precautions to save lives. At the same time, we move the information up to the competent services and then we post it on the Map to facilitate the one who wants to continue and become for us reference documentation.

We target the entire population of North Kivu, in particular our base which has 1100 members (10 per peace area). They receive the real information around the disease. This helped us to lower the tension against the health workers who were prey to rumors and sabotage. In the Rutshuru Territory where peace is fragile we have succeeded in facilitating peaceful re-cohabitation between two Nande and Hutu communities through exchanges between peace areas.

At the same time rumors and misinformation is a problem in our region, the population often retains the truth, but it can sometimes be silent because they do not trust the person who may have a solution. A rumor which changes each time to produce hatred in a community. Our system facilitates the population to express themselves freely because we guarantee them total protection of the source and facilitate their rapid verification.

We think our solution is innovative because it facilitates the population to know the truth and reduce violence in our communities

We use the mobile phone with a capacity to produce more than 330 SMS per day and update our website to facilitate anyone who wants to deepen the information or give a solution

We think that when we would have disseminated our project and the culture of verification of information by our 9000 people, within 5 years. More around 1 Million civilians in North Kivu, will have the mentality to learn, to alert in time and save the health, security and human rights system

Our obstacles are at the village level the multiplicity of armed groups can hinder us from reaching all the villages, financial and material difficulties, the impracticability of certain roads during the rainy seasons.

For the issue of armed groups, this is among the main objectives of our struggle, we train our community ambassadors on the negotiation processes, For the financial aspect, we use the means we have to reach our bases. For the issue of mobility in the rain, our community ambassadors use bicycles and bagged covers for activities.

We coordinate Genocide prevention and conflict management projects in more than 5 countries with different ones. We are THE SENTINEL PROJECT with Unahakika in Kenya, Kijiji Cha Amani in DRC, Hagiga Wahid in South Sudan, Maymar and Iraq. Every non-profit project is registred in his country

Until we do not have enough means to finance the project, we still use a simple Excel model to produce a financial report. The means we have help us to print t-shirts, pay for internet connection and SMS communication card and bikes

Among our Community Ambassadors there are women. We would like to put these women in village telephones to alert us to sexual violence, epidemic evolution, rumors. Here with us are the women who are looking for food for the family, are more in the fields and often far from the familliers, they undergo situations which they do not often meet, but they can produce them in all confidentiality if they seek help.
