Covid-19 respiratory distress

We intend to ameliorate the respiratory distress in Covid-19 infected people. We propose to achieve this aim by scavenging damaging oxygen radicals by taking twice daily the antioxidants pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ, 10 mg) to remove superoxide and N-acetylcysteine (NAC, 1200 mg) to trap hydroxyl radicals. This protocol which we established in an effort to suppress the pain of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy will alleviate the respiratory symptoms of coronavirus-infected persons. It is based on the findings that oxidative stress predicts all-cause mortality in HIV infected patients and our finding that the oxidative stress can be removed by the above mentioned PQQ/NAC therapy.

The coronavirus infection has become a global pandemic that according to estimates of NIH director will affect 100,000 to 200,000 people worldwide. Extrapolated from current death rates large numbers of fatalities are expected  stressing our health care system to its limit. In New York City lack of hospital beds has already caused tents to be erected in Central Park to accommodate overflow patients. 

Our solution will prevent/alleviate respiratory stress in people infected with the coronavirus thereby relieving stress from overcrowded hospitals. By relieving respiratory distress that often is lethal it will save lives worldwide. Our solution uses the antioxidants pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) which will be mage available in a single pill. As these are naturally occurring substances, FDA approval for their combined use is not needed. We have evaluated the safety and medical usefulness of PQQ/NAC for over ten years. PQQ/NAC is generally well tolerated and can be used by post people except of lung cancer patients whose lung cells contain the BACH 1 gene that when exposed to antioxidants promotes tumor metastasis. People on the blood thinner Eliquis need to omit NAC as the interaction of NAC with Eliquis causes severe side effects including tiredness, lack of motivation, disturbed sense of smell and touch and unusual repetitive dreaming.

The solution serves people infected by the coronavirus by alleviating/avoiding acute respiratory stress that often leads to death. We follow the news of the progress of the coronavirus pandemic daily as we do with keeping up with other medical news.

It will in healthy subjects prevent chronic diseases and prolng health span to well over 100 years which will in turn boost the benefit f the longevity economy.

Dealing with excess oxidative stress has not been found promising despite the fact that oxidative stress has long been postulated to underlie chronic disease, the free radical theory of aging has been declared dead because the difficulty to demonstrate a causal link. Fighting oxidative stress has become possible only since 1988 when we announced the presence of this microbial cofactor in animal tissue and fluids. While PQQ was granted GRAS exemption in 2016 and marketed as a nutritional supplement by Mitsubishi Chemical Gas Company, Tokyo its therapeutical potential became only recognized when we succeeded in suppressing the pain of our chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy by creating together with NAC an oxygen radical-free state.

Our technology relies on providing PQQ/NAC as a single over the counter pill that increases convenience and decreases cost. The main point in the development came with the realization that both compounds are used in excess so that covalent interaction will not decrease product potency.

Our evidence that our product works is manyfold including the findings that PQQ/NAC reverses prediabetes, prevents the onset of insulin-dependent diabetes, lowers long-term blood glucose levels as assessed by HbA1c. Also, PQQ/NAC when fed to a sunsetting dog, an animal model for early human Alzheimer's symptoms, markedly delayed the progression of symptoms. Further, PQQ/NAC healed a psoriatic lesion when also applied topically admixed to petroleum jelly for topical application which provided instant itch relief when applied to an itchy spot. PQQ/NAC also ameliorates migraine pain.

Our Solution not only will alleviate acute respiratory stress in coronavirus infected people but also render chronic diseases treatable thereby ending chronic diseases. This is because damage by oxygen radicals to oxidation sensitive tissues, nerve, stem cells and beta-cells in the islets of Langerhans is the cause for chronic diseases. 

We were unable to publish our finding as the journal we originally submitted it to made publication contingent on them being verified by another victim of the rare  mantle cell lymphoma. We were unable to come up with such person and attempted publication in two scientific journals to point out that ending chronic diseases is possible. Howerve, to our surprise the editors did not find material worth publishing in our manuscript. Now with the additional push of preventing/alleviating respiratory stress our project should be more appealing and obtain funding.

Our solution will help coronavirus infected people, presently some 100,000 that may reach 200,000 according to projections by NIH director Anthony Fauci twice that number in the coming five years. In the long run the entire world population will profit while limiting chronic diseases.

In the coming year we will attempt to  make our product , that we call Novapyrin commercially available and have it made available globally within the next five years. We have a team of national and international experts ready that will act as soon as our project is accepted.

Financing has been the major problem. We sought help from over 500 parties with skin in the fame and persons with deep pockets without success.It appears that the potential of a project based on oxygen radical chemistry  is difficult to understand for many. We requested support from the government which did not help for two reasons. They have a multi year multi million project to find an Alzheimer's disease drug that would work for Alzheimer's disease only. A swift completion of our project would render this project obsolete. Also of we were as successful as we hope to be the NIH feels it would have to endorse our product which they are not allowed to do. 

We will continue to seek funds from any imaginable source. Once obtained the resources will be used to make PQQ/NAC commercially available at minimal cost. The profit margin to keep us operational needs to be determined but the product will be less expensive than the cost of the antioxidants purchased separately. 

At present seven scientists volunteer their time to Novavule.

Life Extension

We are a non-profit organization that was entirely financed by its founder & president, myself. Volunteers paid for the antioxidants out of their own pocket causing substantial savings, approximately $100,000 for a volunteer who escaped an insulin-dependent diabetes for 10 years. 

We depend entirely on grant support which we have not received yet. We believe that an insight into how to help people comes as an obligation of scientists to society. 

We are under the impression that our project has the best chance of getting funding by Solve whose specific aim is to end pandemics. Our solution will not only end the coronavirus pandemic but also end chronic diseases which take a large toll in lives and revenue. 900,000 Americans die every year of chronic diseases inflicting a financial burden of more than $1 trillion. And the population of the USA accounts for 4.4% of the world population. A successful completion of our project will alter the health trajectory for generations. It will prevent the UA health care system from collapsing. 

We will partner with Life Extension that has an established distribution network and the Swiss company Solvias for the production of PQQ by chemical synthesis. 

We will partner with Dr. Rudolf Medicus, a long-time scientific advisor  to Novacule, an immunologist by training and PQQ/NAC volunteer who has contributed significantly with results from self-experimentation, including the vasodilatory effect of additional cannabidiol.

With regard to production of PQQ by chemical synthesis  we will partner with Dr. Pierre Martin, a compatriot and inventor of the 10-step one pot chemical synthesis who worked is now retired and worked for Solvias, Basel. With his help the speedy synthesis of PQQ is ascertained. 

We will get the production of Novapyrin, the one pill containing both PQQ and NAC off the ground. This possibility emerged only recently when we realized that the product will contain both substances in excess so that loss of activity because of adduct formation will not become an issue. Prof. Robert Rucker, a researcher at UCLA Savies with whom we often consult drew our attention that we used twice the amount of PQQ as are expected based on animal data. Also, we attempted to get rid of the residual pain of the peripheral neuropathy experienced after stressful dreams. Stress depletes glutathione. We corrected for that by doubling AC from 600 mg to 1200 mg.
