COVID 19 PREVENTION

The problem am committed to solving is the prevention of the COVID 19 from entering Sierra Leone as Liberia and Guinea has recorded cases. The solution we are proposing is complement Government's efforts in intensifying the Infection, Peevention and Countrol(IPC).This involve washing of hands, social distancing, avoidnace or overcrowing, compliance to the resolutions of the State of emergency of the Government.The solution will provide Veronica buckets, sanitizers, tissues,soap,masks, thermometers for temperator screening, and enforcement of social distancing.The solution will positively change lives when globally scaled up as it will prevent the incidence of the COVID19 in non affected areas and will seeve as a prevention for reoccurence in future.In that most of the pandemics like EBOLA and COVID19 are prevented by using disinfectants and good hygiene practices, the experience will ceeate impact to prevent furture incidences of Pandemics.

The COVID19 has affected one hundred and eighty six countries remaining only eleven countries that are at high risks. Our Country Sierra Leone is among the Countries that are on the high risk level as our neighbouring Countries of Liberia and Guinea have recorded cases of the COVID 19.The Government has slammed a Public State of Emergency with resolutions to intensify the peevention of the COVID 19 in the country. The Ministry of Health and Sanitationisnon a public awareness and sensitisation with support of many stakeholders of both public and private sectors in the Infection, Prevention and Control(IPC). With the experience of the EBOLA scourge from 2013 to 2015 inclusive , it killed over 5000 people and left many survivors that are facing social and wdonomic challenges. The solution will prevent about seven million people in Sierra Leone from contracting the COVID19.

Our solution is the Infection, Prevention and Control(IPC) measures to prevent the COVID 19 from entering our Country as our neighbouring countries of Guinea and Liberia have recorded cases.The solution is a simple approach to disinfecting people from contracting the COVID 19. This involves the washing of hands with soap and water, sanitizing the hands, sensitisation of people to peactice social distancing, overcrowding , reduce movements and report early any sick cases for treatment.The solution will prevent the contacting of people and thereby reducing the chances of contracting  and spreading the disease in the Country.The solution uses only locally available materials of veronica buckets, soap, hand sanitizers, tissues, thermometers, and adhereance to the resolutions of social distancing and overcrowding.

The solution will target the 250,000 population of Kambia District.This includes women, men and children that are living in the hard to reach areas that are close to the border of the Republic of Guinea. The experience of the EBOLA pandemic that ravaged the country and the Kambia District has clearly menifested the need to provide this solution to prevent the incidence of the COVID 19 through the Infection , Prevention and Countrol activities.The target population will be engaged by sensitisation and public awareness raising through the local radio stations, Banners, leaflets, flyers, focus group discussions with a controlled number of people sitting ar a distance to avoid touching of each other.The solution will prevent the incidence and occurence of the disease . The enforcement of the resolutions which includes no over loading in public transports, no devotions in schools, closure of educational institutions, no beaches visitations, closure of night clubs and night trading, no gathering in funrals ,wedings and effective social distancing. By the strict adherence of the local population to these resolutions it will surely prevent the ocurence of the COVID19.

The solution is well aligned to the problem and the target population as it has been practiced during the EBOLA sourge and produced positive results by ensing the EBOLA in record timing without causing much destruction in the country as  whole. The simplicity of the Solution and the availability of the materials needed for the solution and preparedness  , compliance of the target population, it has a good fit to the problem and solution by preventing the COVID 19 from affecting the local population. In general ut is a preventive approach rather than a curative approach that is not available.

Our solution is unique as it has been used during the prevention of EBOLA in our country and it produced positive resultsby ending the scourge in a cost effective manner.

This is a new application of an existing technology as the recommendation was made by the World Health Oraganisation as an Infection, Prevention and Control approach towards the prevention of PANDEMICS.

During the EBOLA scourge in Sierra Leone, this solution was tried and successfully prevented the greater population from contracting the EBOLA, and shortly the EBOLA ended and  the transmission was eradicated completely .It was less expensive and was widely accepted by the local population.Currently the same solution is widly propogated by the World Health Organisation and our Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

The solution has a theory of change / logical framework of which the variables are practically interlocking.

Activities

Practice of Infection, Prevention and Control(IPC)

This includes:

placement of veronica buckets, soap,and hand sanitizers, tissues in public places like markets, lorry parks, health centers, offices, shops for effective hand washing

enforcement of the social distancing by not fathering for social activities like wedings, funerals, night clubs, beaches .

drastic reduction of movements to other countries that has recorded cases by closung of the borders

reporting of strangers that visits the communities to authorities for screening and if possible quarantine them for 14 days.

The solution will target 250 thousand people for noe and in the next one year it will scale up to 400 thousand people and in the next five years it will serve 800 thiusand if at all a pandemic occurs again.

With the success story of the solution in peeventing the COVID 19 it will be replicated elsewhere when ever a pandemic structs.

Financial unavialability will be the only barrier.

The community will see the need to contribute to save their lives if there is no donor.

During the advent of the EBOLA in our country our staff and volunteers were working in different institutions and actively participated in various capacities including contact tracers, social mobilizers, Gender desk, infection, prevention and control, secretary to the Command Cenrer. All of us have acquireda waelth of experience in handling epidemics and pandemics. As the transmission of the COVID 19 is similar to the EBOLA, we will use our experience to prevent the occurence and transmission.

We are collaborating with the Kambia District Council , the District Health Management Team (DHMT)to implement this solution. By extension the District security apparatus for enforcement and compliance of the social distancing and resolutions.

The COVID 19 has created panic, fear , uncertainty in the Sierra Leonean population as our neighbouring countries have recorded cases of COVID 19. There is every need to source funds to complement the Government to provide these items for the Infection , Prorection and Control (IPC).

In order to achieve the objective of zero infection of the COVID 19 in our district and by extension our country, we will collarborare with pressue groups like the traders unions, drivers unions, bike riders union, market women associations, youth groups, and local authorities to implement this project.
