Kirumba farmer's association
PROBLEM: Job accessibility and food security in marginalized populations.
APPROACH:
Teaching the community how to carry out modern farming by use of cheap modern faming methods for example making there own organic fertilisers ,organic agrophosphates with use of environment free resources , practicing indoor farming ,how to deal with the changing weather conditions.
Strengthening institutional framework for promotion of agriculture.
Improving market access for agricultural products .
SOLUTION EFFECT. With the 1 .27m people (08/05/2020) who have lost there jobs due to Covid 19 and the174.3m people who were unemployed before the pandemic . We think and hope this number will greatly reduce if people involve in agriculture on a scale of 6/10.
Globally over 3m people are unemployed and the numbers are increasing rapidly due to Covid 19.
There is in equal access to income and employment opportunities hence high rate of poverty. Over 70% homes in rural areas present social , economic challenges. The outlook is bleak to marginalized groups such as women ,young children and segment of rural population.
In short to medium term , improved income generating and employment opportunities in rural areas is primarily in agriculture. However traditional farming methods and low levels of crop diversification combined with weather changes results in poor yield.
So our aim is at enhancing food security in homes and creating surplus for sale by solving all these limiting factors in agricultural sector.
As kirumba farmer's association we decided to solve all the limitations in the sector of agriculture by creating awareness of modern and cheap farming methods.
We teach communities on how to ;
Make there own organic fertilisers and these make plants resistant to changing weather and increase the yields of agriculture.
Make organic agrophosphates which kill pests.
We are trying to improve market access for agricultural products.
With our cheap measures we have made a small population benefit from agriculture compared to our target . This is because such alternative approaches have received little support upto date.
Marginalized groups include women ,young people and segments of rural population and these are the major groups we working to directly improve. As a group we do farming majorly crop production but before we made this group the majority of people in it were suffering low agricultural yields attributed to by pests and diseases ,weather changes ,unfertile soils and weather changes ,lack of access to market both locally and globally ,so we decided to form a group to fight this . However not that the entire community was covered ( not even a 1/4of our target). Though bad kirumba farmer's association we organise free sensitization programs teaching other farmer's on how they can benefit out of agriculture though we can't reach the target due to lack of support.
Our solution will be able to increase on the yields ,create market for farmer's .
- Equip workers with technological and digital literacy as well as the durable skills needed to stay apace with the changing job market
We as kirumba farmer's association we believe people have kept a blind eye to agriculture because of its associated problem .However we believe that if the population is equiped with these modern ,cheap and accessible means they will get involved in agriculture hence job creation.
- Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in one or, ideally, several communities, which is poised for further growth
- A new business model or process
Competitors include companies which make inorganic fertilisers , inorganic agrophosphates but our are organic meaning they are eco_friendly ,cheap since most of what we use are environmental provided free resources. So we hope even people living under poverty line will be in position to use our methods since we teach and raw materials to use are in there environment
Our solution is a new application of existing technology . Agrophosphates and fertilisers are there in farmer's input surplus shops but these can not be managed by the marginalized people . So we as kirumba farmer's association we decided to come up with better ,cheap and eco_friendly solutions which can be accessed or utilised by the marginalized people.
Our solution uses accepted technology we're farmer's use plants and other free resources to make extract that are used as fertilisers , agrophosphates to kill pests and diseases and use of tins to make spraying pumps that enable these farmer's water there planta in dry seasons.
- Manufacturing Technology
Our theory of change is promoting cheap , accessible, eco friendly and easy to use methods of farming . This aims at creating solutions to people leaving under poverty line ( marginalized population)

- Uganda
Currently it serves over 2000 farmer's
In one year we hope to serve 1m people
And in next 5 years we hope to be serving over 10m people
Our goals in next year is at least to reach out to over a million people
Our key steps in implementing the project.
1. Participatory selection of the selected groups.
2. Supporting farmer's groups in improving there production and market for there produce.
Our greatest barrier has been funds because our major target population are people living under poverty line.
Other barriers include people's bias towards agriculture ,lack of market for the products and land were to carry agriculture.
We are planning on solving the issue of funds by applying for grants .
The issue of bias will be by use if public figures who are doing the same and gave benefited and the issues of market we are trying to put forums linking farmer's to consumers.
- Nonprofit
None
We are a group of 30 farmers
I and my team have been in agriculture for over 10 years and we started using this method bof farming 2 years ago so with experience we have in agriculture we can deliver quality and life changing agricultural skills
None
We will provide our customers with skills to make there own agrophosphates , fertilisers ,create for them access to market and this will be done by sensitizing the selected target groups.
Farmers need these services because of the challenges ( low yields ,lack of market) they are facing now .
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
We expect to bring in money to fund our work in future through our sales of our agricultural products ,grants and donations .
We are applying to solve because our association is in existence but our covered group is far below our targeted population and this attributed to by lack of funds in our association
- Product/service distribution
- Funding and revenue model
- Marketing, media, and exposure
We need partnership in funding because of the financial problems bwe are suffering in our association
We need partnership in marketing as this will create market for most of the farmers products.
MIT faculty ,solve members and organisation .
These potential partners can help in financing and creating market for our products.
Our team will use the prize and move in refugee camps and equip these people with small skill which can be money generating to them ,do counseling and guidance to them as a model of bringing hope back to them ,provide medical attention and provide them with free food .
I and my team will use those funds to help teach ladies small skills and get them start there own jobs since they are part of the marginalized population
Yes ,because our target as kirumba farmer's association is to create jobs and food security to the disadvantaged
Yes ,i and my other friend ( Higenyi Erisa) we designed a prototype for a tablet that give online classes which are simple to understand to the ilterate and which we hope can improve literacy
