Boombadotmobi
Boombadotmobi connects waste generators with waste collectors to facilitate the process of responsible waste disposal.
We do this by partnering with truck owners, find them jobs and then we regulate the final destination of waste. Our truck operators take 25% of the transaction.
With the green waste, we send it to local farmers for composting, we use construction waste to rehabilitate eroded graveled streets in townships and share recyclable waste with local community members.
We then send customers pictures of the final destination of their waste.
Situated in the north of Johannesburg, South Africa, Diepsloot Township is home to many Africans from different walks of life. It boasts a population of over 500 thousands with at least 30 percent keeping formal jobs and earning between the $120 to $800 thresholds per month (Add the Black Tax). The remaining majority is either unemployed or informally entrepreneurs living from hand to month. This dynamics means Diepsloot township and many other townships have their priorities set on getting the bread, how their kids are going to survive the next day and every. This then leaves the question of the environment exposed to all sorts of hazards and contamination. Major among them is illegal dumping. Because the majority of illegally dumped waste does not come from within the townships, local truck owners have identified an opportunity to make profit from informally collecting waste from the suburbs and dump it in the townships. With the desperation of earning a living, another problem is created. This has led to community parks, rivers and other public spaces turned into dumping.Because local community members are concerned with immediate pressing family or household challenges, the well being of the environment is of less interest to many.
To address the scourge of illegal dumping through the formalization of truck owners that enables the regulation of waste disposal. To create a sustainable solution for waste disposal that allows truck owners (our partners) to do business that benefits both themselves and their communities. Thus we view our solution in this component:
- We create a platform for sustainable waste disposal. This will allows our organization to have control over what happens with the waste while the truck owner makes a profit through the waste collection.
- We train and educate our truck partners of the importance of responsible waste disposal. These assist our organization in not just providing economic stability to our partners but the further instilling environmental values for future generations.
- Because we are data oriented organization to measure our social impact in the communities we serve, we have introduced an App in which our truck partners can receive jobs. This further helps us with introducing a new way of doing business with those who would have otherwise been still business in the traditional fashion.
Boombadotmobi aims to achieve a zero illegal dumping in Diepsloot and surrounding townships. We believe the key to unlocking the circular economy in the townships is through a collaborative approach with existing stakeholders; truck owners, farmers and community members. Given the nature and variety of the waste we collect, we believe the organization has the potential to explore new opportunities in which waste by-products can be created for profit, thus creating sustainable jobs for local community members. This will further provide prospects to participate in the economy not just as township residents but as South African citizens in a continent where illegal dumping is visible. The creation of waste by-products introduces the prospects of new partners in the Engineering and Technology space and this would mean finding more innovative ways to impact the communities we serve.
- Enable small and new businesses, especially in untapped communities, to prosper and create good jobs through access to capital, networks, and technology
Both the entrepreneurial spirit and high unemployment rate is visible in
the township of Diepsloot, South Africa. Also visibly evident is the performing of doing business outside the government bylaws which poses potential risks risks. Doing business in the environmental space remains very important to observation the international environmental bylaws. For an example, illegal dumping affects the well being of the people, especially children, where it is performed. With this in mind, we believe those who spot opportunities, especially where opportunities exist, should not be discouraged but be empowered to doing business right way so their businesses environmentally benefit everyone.
- Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in one or, ideally, several communities, which is poised for further growth
