Online Courses for deafs

Signa is a platform that provides online courses for deafs, helping them to get prepared for their professional activities through contents created in sign language and subtitles, with their culture and their teaching methodology.

Online education is exponentially growing and helping more and more people everyday to develop different job skills. People who can’t relocate, people who have no time, people who can’t afford to invest in a classroom education. However, online education is not available for more than 360 million deaf people from all over the world. This is because they can not read fluently and the video classes do not have subtitles and sign language. To communicate and acquire knowledge, many of the deaf depend on sign language.

We have been having student taking our courses to rich a job dream, to get a better job or to prepare themselves for a autonomy job. Those were feedbacks given straight from them.
Also, according to a brazilian research made by i.Social and Catho, in 2015, one of the biggest reason of the enterprise not attending the quota's law is the lack of trained people with desabilites in the market.

Our solution will bring new perspectives about career opportunities for the deaf. They will have greater choice in their pursuit for professional activities because of the new learning opportunities available to them and not just what the market currently gives to them by their underestimation. The beneficiaries are deaf people who uses sign language e/or depends on subtitles on video lessons, within the age around 15 to 49. We have been already implementing it through an online accessible platform with courses created by own deaf people from the community with a specific knowledge and fluency in sign language.

There is no other big player in the world creating a online education plataform focus on deaf people, wich can eficially comunicate to them and teach new ideas and conceptions on their own language, sign language. Because of the lack of accessible elearing platforms in the market, we are creating our own. We are also becaming expecialized in market for deaf people, what does not exist any model to follow to.

Since the beggining, Signa has been envolving the deaf community in all the validation process until now. We have changed our proposal and the solution because of the interviews that we did with them. They have been involved in the process of the new platform construction and all our courses topics are chosen by them. Besides that, we select deaf teachers priority to create the courses, sharing a knowledge and abilities that they already have.

Our target market will have access to our tecnology through paying a small amount for each course they want to take. For those one's who can not pay for our service, we also offer 2 free courses and we have the plan to work on a B2B business model, where the companies wich wants to comunicate to deaf people or hire them will sponsor the courses.

So far, we have sustained ourselves with some governamental equity free investments. Recently, we have grown our revenue after a business model changing. For the next months our plan is sustain ourselves with our revenue complemented to the money from the accelerator programs we are in. After three months, when we grow our student base, we are going to start to explore a B2B model, to start to maintain our business and have the possibilite to provide free courses for those who can not afford it.

One factor is the design of our plataform. We are about to launch a new one with a better user experience for the deafs. Other limiting is the fact that e-learning education / online courses are still an unknown conception by the deafs. We have been working to educate the market about this.

Leandro da Cunha is in charge of the marketing, probably one of the few people in the world especializing himself in marketing for deafs. Icaro Rezende is our CTO with 8 years experiencie in tecnology business. Manolo Torres is our COO, interpreteur, fluent in sign language, with 20 years experience.
