CodeOut
- Pre-Seed
Code Out is committed to increasing social welfare in Bangladesh by providing a platform for impoverished youth to learn computer programming. Through the skill of computer programming Code Out aims to increase literacy, employment and gender equality in Bangladesh.
Code Out commits to creating a hands-on, in-person computer programming course for youth in Bangladesh. This instruction will equip them with skills that will enhance employment opportunities in the growing technology industry. Nearly one-third of the population in Bangladesh lives under its national poverty line, and Code Out’s training will assist in increasing the employment potential of youth in skilled jobs that can contribute to lifting them out of poverty. Code Out will partner with Bangladesh based non-profit organizations such as BRAC and schools such as Notre Dame College and Aga Khan School, to assist with program outreach and service delivery. Code Out will also work with universities in the United States to recruit student volunteers as instructors in the program.
According to the World Bank, 31.5% of the population in Bangladesh lives under the national poverty line of two dollars per day with citizens on average generating $67.40 per month in income. In Bangladesh, the Information Communication Technology industry has evolved to create three hundred million dollars in revenue yearly, which is why opportunities that Code Out hopes to create are essential to improving social welfare.
Code Out’s goal is to empower youth by teaching them computer programming skills. Code Out will focus on achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals. We aim to address eliminating poverty (Goal 1), ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all (Goal 4), achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls (Goal 5), and promoting productive employment and decent work for all (Goal 8). To be successful, Code Out will create a computer programming curriculum that will be taught to youth participants after their school day has ended. Code Out will partner with BRAC and Notre Dame College in Dhaka to enroll low socioeconomic youth participants as these institutions serve this population.

Bangladesh currently has computer training institutions, like NewHorizons, that offer computer programming classes. These programs are costly, commercialized, and do not teach computer programming skills at the rudimentary level needed for youth. CodeOut aims to teach youth computer programming and empower them through this skill, at a cost based on financial need. CodeOut hopes to learn from organizations such as Laboratoria and TheirWorld that teach computer programming.

To address our goals while being economically sustainable within Code Out, we would like to open our training opportunities to all children of all socioeconomic statuses. Students of higher socioeconomic status backgrounds will be charged for their participation. By charging a fee to students who can afford to pay, we will be able to cover the cost of impoverished children who cannot. More specifically, to determine which students will pay, those children that are already served by NGOs because of their financial status, will be eligible for a waived fee. Essentially, the fee that one family pays will support other Code Out students who are financially constraine
