Global University Business Club Limited
Global University Business Club Ltd is a newly created public limited company in Uganda engaged in replication into community/commercialization of students’ university-based projects—intervening in improving societal well-being & enhancing graduates’ labour market transition. The selectionof the Projects to be facilitated will be an online activity akin to Harpercollins: https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/
The Club itself is engaged in: a SACCO scheme – that we look forward to graduate/scale up into a Bank - targeting the mobilization of savings, firstly, from university communities [students and staff]; Making food solar dryers – to reduce Africa’s abnormally high post harvest losses due to poor drying and storage systems; and Plastics waste recycling and making quality plastic chairs with metal frame – making top quality plastic chairs with metal frame—engraved with the Club’s name, which will the single hugest Company's advertisement channel.
Global University Business Club Limited addresses: Uganda's disheartening Graduates' unemployment which is also global challenge; and poverty among communities surrounding universities – SDGs 4, 8 and 1. The initiative attends to the folly of Uganda’s/Africa’s education that Babyetsiza (2011) observes this in Destined To Triumph, saying: “… what is return in investment in education in Uganda/Africa given that the [country/] continent has remained crawling technologically when the rest of the world is running” (https://www.amazon.com/Destined-Triumph-Mr-Julius-Babyetsiza/dp/1461035791). A kindred folly is: “A research done and the findings not disseminated—and later on implemented—is a research not done.” In order that Babyetsiza(2019)’s action research study [https://journals.co.za/content/journal/10520/EJC-1b11317bee] is not caught in the folly of Uganda/Africa’s education, he has engineered the founding of “Global University Business Club (GlobalUBC) Limited,” envisaged to have presence in a hordes of universities—in Uganda and globally.
The Company’s Vision is becoming the best avenue for a university to be most relevant in the market place. The Mission is to carry on credible businesses through replication into community and commercialization of students’ university-based projects that will intervene in improving societal well-being by way of enhancing students’ and graduates’ transition to the labour market: entrepreneurship, self-employment and employability.
The proposed solution is captured in Global University Business Club’s:
- Goal - of providing the best avenue for a university to be most relevant in the market place;
- Mission - to carry on credible businesses that will intervene in improving societal well-being through enhancing students’ and graduates’ transition to the labour market, entrepreneurship, self-employment and employability through replication into community and commercialisation of students’ university-based projects;
- Values - Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Character, Democracy, Legitimacy, and Citizenship; and
- Objectives
- To carry on credible businesses that will intervene in improving societal well-being through enhancing students’ and graduates;
- To replicate into community and commercialise students’ university-based projects; and
- To enhance student’s transition to the labour market, entrepreneurship, self-employment and employability through.
For leading and showing the way to students’ university-based projects’ replication into community and commercialized, the Company plans to engage in the following business activities [to start with]:
- A SACCO Scheme – that we look forward to graduate/scale up into a Bank;
- Making/building solar dryers – to reduce Africa's abnormally high post-harvest losses due to poor drying and storage systems.
- Plastics waste recycling and making plastic chairs with metal frame – making top quality plastic chairs with metal frame.
The solutions attend to SDGs 4, 8 and 1. The relevance of the initiative is to improve the lives of people, including the poverty-stricken, with university being at centre of providing solutions. The Club will address Uganda’s grand challenge currently, youth/graduates’ unemployment problem—GlobalUBC Ltd’s very first set of beneficiaries are tertiary education graduates, who finish universities and other tertiary education institutions, and for years and years, search for elusive jobs, at the end of which they retort to engaging into social evils to make ends meet—engaging or joining wrong groups such as terrorist bands. It is for same reasons, they scramble at any cost, daring to fatally be tortured doing odd jobs in Middle East and in the West. The majority these who are risking their lives, are unemployed tertiary education graduates. In Uganda, according to 2013 statistics, unemployment rate was 83%—of course, currently the situation is grimmer.
The second set of beneficiaries is Uganda/Africa masses, including universities’ surrounding communities. A university and surrounding communities in Uganda/Africa are more or less mutually exclusive—it is not uncommon to find households and communities living on under less than $1 per day among populations in the vicinity of a university.
- Enable small and new businesses, especially in untapped communities, to prosper and create good jobs through access to capital, networks, and technology
Firstly, as said earlier in "Who does your solution serve, ..."
Secondly, founding of GlobalUBC is informed by Julius Babyetsiza’s PhD study: “Gainful self-employment among tertiary education graduates in uganda: an action research study of Ankole Western University’s programme of skilling students and alumni.” Here is journal article: https://journals.co.za/content/journal/10520/EJC-1b11317bee
The study’s structure deployed Stephen Kemmis’ cyclical model of: plan, act, observe, and reflect. This informed a new study, entitled: “Learning by doing for gainful self-employment among students and graduates in Uganda through entrepreneurship clubs and societies: an action research of AWU and its surrounding communities”:

- Prototype: A venture or organization building and testing its product, service, or business model
- A new business model or process
The folly of Uganda’s/Africa’s education is observed by Babyetsiza (2011) saying: “… what is return in investment in education in Uganda/Africa given that the [country/] continent has remained crawling technologically when the rest of the world is running” – available here: (https://www.amazon.com/Destined-Triumph-Mr-Julius-Babyetsiza/dp/1461035791). A kindred folly is: “A research done and the findings not disseminated—and later on implemented—is a research not done.” In order that Babyetsiza(2019)’s action research study is not caught in the folly of Uganda/Africa’s education, he has engineered the founding of GlobalUBC) Limited.
This solution innovative because it's product of research. Founding of Global University Business Club is informed by two studies. Babyetsiza (2019)’s PhD action research study, whose plausible journal article can be seen here: https://journals.co.za/content/journal/10520/EJC-1b11317bee -
Babyetsiza (2019)’s PhD action research study inform a new study, entitled: “Learning by doing for gainful self-employment among students and graduates in Uganda through entrepreneurship clubs and societies: an action research of AWU and its surrounding communities.” The “Conceptualization” was presented at the 6th International Conference on Social Sciences 2019 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia”:

The Club is an active laboratory for Mr Babyetsiza’s PhD study as well as an avenue for living the PhD when completed—the completion is envisaged by the end of this year, 2020.
Selection of the students’ university-based projects for replication into community/commercialization to be funded - is another innovation - it will be largely a digital activity akin to Harpercollins: https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/
GlobalUBC Limited's main product/service is replication into community and commercialization of students’ university-based projects. The selecton of the projects to be funded will be powered by a digital activity akin to harpercollins: https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/ . The case in point is Julius Babyetsiza's publication of book Destined To Triumph (2011), available here: https://www.amazon.com/Destined-Triumph-Mr-Julius-Babyetsiza/dp/1461035791 . Mr Babyetsiza first submitted the book to harpercollins' https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/. Each account at this harpercollins' site is allowed to display on one's Shelf at most five (5) books of other authors - those one has read and liked. So the more one's book appears on other people's Shelves, the more it goes up in ranks. Babyetsiza's "Destined To Triumph," when he submitted it, it started in the 6,000th something rank. Within 5 months, it had climbed to 31st rank. At the end of each month, Harpercollins picks books standing in the 1st to 5th ranks, offers the authors contracts and publishes the books.
In like manner, university students will upload the concepts of their projects that are replicatable into community or commercialisable to a facility similar to harpercollins' https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/ that GlobalUBC Limited is the process of designing. The best project will displayed by the system.
As such, the digital system plus the activity in the GlobalUBC Ltd's business model below, shall be used to select the projects to fund with
GlobalUBC's SACCO's resources:
At least the said above technology, the digital activity, of selecting the best book projects to be supported by publishing them, has worked for harpercollins: https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/ - HarperCollins Publishers L.L.C. is one of the world's largest publishing companies and is one of the the 5 top English-language publishing companies - https://blog.reedsy.com/largest-book-publishers/

Global University Business Club (GlobalUBC) Limited” is a public limited company that envisages to have presence in as universities in Uganda and globally as possible. However, at prototype stage, we are focusing on Ugandan universities. There are 54 licensed universities by the Uganda National Council for Higher education. The hugest, Makerere Univesity has 40,000 plus students while the smaller one might have 1,000 students - prudently, we can put the average student body in a university to 10,000 students. This gives total students body to 540,000 students in the country.
Makerere University has staff body [both academic and none academic] of 3,000 plus employees. The smaller universities have to the tune of 100 employees. Prudently, the average can be put to 500 employees in a university - this give: 500 x 54 = 27,000. The sum of students and employees is 567,000.00 - and this is what the prototype stage is targeting - at least in SACCO Scheme.
In the next one year, we shall have:
=> operations full powered by the digital facility similar to harpercollins https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/
=> Have fully constituted evaluation body, from universities in Uganda, for evaluating students' projects that should be supported.
=> Having at least a handful of students' projects replicated in the community
=> Have the SACCO Scheme full; and the Food dryer activity fully operational
=> Started the process of setting up the Plastics Waste Recycling Plant for making quality plastic chairs with metal frame
In the next five years, we shall have in place:
=> A full functional Plastics Waste Recycling Plant and making quality plastic chairs with metal frame
=> In process of scaling up the SACCO into a Bank
=> A good number of students' projects replicated in the community with evidence of cubing down graduates' unemployment and communities' uplifting speaking for itself.
The barriers to accomplish the goal listed above:
- All the requirements for legal structures of GlobalUBC Ltd have been submitted to Uganda’s companies registration Bureau, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, and the company is waiting to be issued the Certificate of Incorporation – be we certain we shall get it but the process is slow.
- In the intervening period, some staff and students of Ankole Western University and Bishop Stuart University have so far bought 51 shares. As a public limited Company, GlobalUBC Ltd is planning to allot 1,000,000 shares, each UGX20,000 [approx. 5.46 USD] – thus, looking forward to raising UGX20,000,000,000 [5,464,960USD] from the sale of shares. But are moving slowly, because we want to first popularize the Company among universities, who are the core stakeholders - we are moving slowly because of the logistical constraints cause be lack of finances.
- Operation constraints due lack of finances to start on the business activities of the Club itself, not students replication into community/commercialize their project, in particular the following: SACCO scheme; Making food solar dryers; and Plastics waste recycling and making quality plastic chairs with metal frame.
- With Certificate of Incorporation – be it slow, but we certain we shall get it.
- Selling the Club among other university, we are trying with mouth-to-month and social media channels. We have introduced GlobalUBC Limited to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Innovation & Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, the world leader in the kindred initiatives, and they applauded the innovation saying:
“… This sounds like an incredible project that will undoubtedly help a number of individuals in their career transitions. … We encourage [you] to keep us updated on your progress and if there is an opportunity for us to greater support you. This is something we strive to have the means to do in the future!” - We have sought the hand of MIT and she has pledged us her support if we could find resources that it takes. As such, we have included MIT in GlobalUBC Ltd's Management/Leadership Team.
- We are readying to the Prospectus to go public - all the requirements for legal structures of GlobalUBC Ltd have been submitted to Uganda’s companies registration bureau, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, and the company is waiting to be issued the Certificate of Incorporation. In the intervening period, some staff and students of Ankole Western University and Bishop Stuart University have bought 51 shares.
