KUMPUL Entrepreneur Platform
Because of geographical location, Indonesia's education and economic condition have a major difference in terms of its development. Almost most of the business activity is concentrated in Java island, proven by contributing 59.03% to the national economy in 2019 even though it occupies only 6,8% of total geographical area in Indonesia.
Kumpul partnered with more than 50 startup ecosystem builders like local coworking spaces and community partners across Indonesia. Through them, KUMPUL is trying to bridge the gap by distributing quality programs to help build the digital ecosystem and ignite the spirit of entrepreneurship in cities across Indonesia.
We use our platform called PUTIH (Program Utilization Information Hub) to capture all program quality metrics to make sure the program delivers the best outcome. Also, startup ecosystem builders across Indonesia will get equal opportunity to access high quality programs for their community.
Indonesia geographic condition as an archipelagic country (more than 17k islands) is full of culture and diversity with more than 700 languages/accents and 450 cultures. As remarkable as it looks, it becomes harder to get the knowledge spread and implemented because maintaining the same quality of facilities and access across the country is a struggle. Right now, out of 265 million people, there are more than 180 million internet users in Indonesia, but 55% is still coming from Java. This is why the income distribution and productivity differ greatly as how technological innovation diffuses within economies and interacts with market conditions matters
As digitization has reshaped society, inequalities have increased between the party that has been exposed to these knowledge's, and the one who’s not. These gaps are due to many factors, including a lack of digital entrepreneurship role models and a lack of digital skills, several recent studies show that many obstacles to business creation (e.g. lack of skills, access to finance, small and ineffective networks) carry over into the digital economy.
Partnering with a lot of institutions, KUMPUL is trying to improve this situation by embracing local players to be KUMPUL’s extension in the targeted cities.
Our mission is to distribute educational experiences, empowerment, and opportunities to individuals to shape entrepreneurs' mindset and grow the digital ecosystem through our local partners in each city. We believe that delivering quality programs consistently will help the ecosystem grow and will result in the improvement of their economy and standard of living.
Through the course of five years, we are planning to develop human resources in 5 anchor provinces covering 24 cities across Indonesia, starting from East Java through 3 stages:
- Talent development & Mentor’s training (Equip human resource in Design, Tech and Business in order to build a generation that is skillful and resilient)
- Digital Entrepreneurship Transformation (Give a proper knowledge and instill mindset of entrepreneurship. How to create solutions out of problem, build a team, and execute the ideas)
- Entrepreneurship Growth (Supporting early stage entrepreneurs to grow their business, connect them with mentors and VC)
To create a comprehensive program and distribute it to millions of people in 24 Cities, we are going to bring the government on board. Starting from East Java, and spread to another province (South Sumatera, Bali, South Sulawesi, and Yogyakarta).
Capacity building program is a joint efforts program involving local government and universities to improve the citizen’s knowledge in design, tech, and business by providing a set of curriculum of workshops with project-based tasks. The audience will be taught in a series of workshops by industry experts to enhance their knowledge and then do several projects related to their course (e.g graphic designing, data analytics, website or app developing projects) - provided by freelance service platform. At the end of the programs, they will get certificates that will allow them to get a better career or build a startup.
To transform into digital entrepreneurship and grow their entrepreneurship skills, together with Techstars and ICT Ministry, they will get courses on how to build startups (build team, MVP, legal, administration, business plans). These entrepreneurs later will get mentoring opportunities with successful startup founders and practitioners to grow and scale their business up. Potential startups will get the chance to pitch in front of venture capitals. All of these will get recorded on our platform called “PUTIH” (Program Utilization Information Hub), a tech platform developed by KUMPUL that allows us to track entrepreneurs' growth across Indonesia.
- Enable small and new businesses, especially in untapped communities, to prosper and create good jobs through access to capital, networks, and technology
Within the 24 Cities we are targeting, there are 180 million citizens, and 25% are within the age of 18-35 years old (45 million people are young generation). Among that, 80% have basic knowledge about the internet but only 18% of them have explored more on the digital opportunity and tech innovation. Within 5 years, we are planning to educate 1.5 million young generations and convert them to be digital entrepreneurs. Through this, we are hoping to improve their income by 10% every year.
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community
- A new business model or process
To achieve our goal, it is essential to build partnership with local and national government to enable us unlocking certain authority within the city to better implement the programs. But, because of the complicated bureaucracy of government at the national level, we are engaging local startup ecosystem builder directly for the faster route.
We have established partnerships with the ICT Ministry, Ministry of Tourism & Creative Economy, and East Java Governor to implement the programs. Within one to two years, we are planning to onboard another ministry as well such as the Ministry of Education.
Kumpul has already a network of over 50 coworking and community partners across Indonesia. In addition to generating interest for potential founders to startup in the digital entrepreneurship space, hundreds of mentors have been developed across at least 25 cities across Indonesia.
Kumpul, working together with their global partners, Techstars, has collaborated with the different partners in the Startup Weekend Indonesia© program, where Kumpul 5x the previous years numbers of events, allowing more than 1200 participants to participate in the program, as compared to 300 in the previous year.
Kumpul also brought the 1000StartupDigital© program, a program from the ICT Ministry to at least 15 ecosystems across Indonesia, bringing digital economy awareness to over 40,000 participants, and training hundreds of mentors within a 6 months time span.
Rather than competing with other players, our positioning is unique because we bring together the startup ecosystem builders and collaborating with them in order to achieve bigger impact.
For delivering the best outcome we connect all the data in our platform called PUTIH (Programs Utilization Information Hub), capturing 3 main factors in building startup ecosystem, Program, Place, and People
Program - PUTIH captures all program quality metric to make sure the program deliver the best outcome. The data that captured by Putih including the quality of the mentors, engagement of the program, participants feedback, and many more
Place - PUTIH will analyze the hubs/place capacity, capability, and community that match with Kumpul's program and initiatives. With PUTIH, hubs across Indonesia will get equal opportunity to access high quality program to their community.
People - Through PUTIH, Kumpul will track the entrepreneur journey from single founder until they become success/unicorn. With this data tracking Kumpul can matchmaking high quality program that meets entrepreneur needs in their stage/level
By distributing opportunity through technology, we are implement big data and artificial intelligence to help us matchmaking the performance of program quality with hubs quality.
When hubs running their desired Kumpul's program, we also measured their performance so we can drive the Hubs performance metric. By knowing hubs performance metric and program quality metric, big data and AI will generate insight and match making which program is suitable for hubs and vice versa automatically.
Also we applies machine learning to matchmaking the entrepreneur with our program. By integrate those 3 technology we believe our platform can deliver real impact to bigger audience and help Indonesia reach it's economic growth
Attached on the link bellow, the work flow of our platform, "PUTIH" (Program Utilization Information Hub)
- Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
- Big Data
- Software and Mobile Applications
Through Kumpul's digital platform (PUTIH), networks and program's curriculum designed and tested specifically to help entrepreneurs grow their business, alongside with Kumpul hubs in numerous cities in Indonesia, it will give access for communities to tech experts, quality programs, mentors, fellow aspiring entrepreneurs, and investors to help them build their businesses and impacting their area.
Through our hubs and government networks, we know that the digital small medium enterprises has become a concern for both local and national institutions, especially in rural areas where the digital knowledge and understanding are still very low. These were caused by many factors, but some that we can address are the lack of capable mentors within the area as well as the right curriculum that can match the local culture so that it will be easier to digest by them.
These activities will improve the knowledge transfer from big cities to rural areas where digital knowledge is still unfamiliar within the communities. The existence of Kumpul hubs will also act as a support system for entrepreneurs and help communities to get and share resources and knowledge. These changes will affect the environment and improve the economic conditions in that area as it will open new jobs, bring new knowledge and innovations.
In the long run, it will help the local government to have better visibility that can be reflected in more strategic policies and agendas in order to help entrepreneurs and move the regional economic activities.
PUTIH digital platform will hopefully bring more benefits to the untapped communities in the rural area, especially those who are most disadvantaged and marginalized.

In the past year we have done several capacity building program, one of them is 1000 Startup Digital, a National Movement initiated by the ICT Ministry together with KUMPUL as a strategic partner. This movement is a series of programs with the objective to create startups from zero to MVP in the course of 6 months. The program had impacted 78.853 participants with a composition of 15% programmers, 18% designers, and 67% business, spread in 10 cities, covering 7 sectors (Education, Agriculture, Tourism, Health, Fintech, Energy, and Logistics).
Another program we handle is Startup Weekend Indonesia, a program created by Techstars (global accelerator) together with KUMPUL as national coordinator, we run this program across 14 cities. In the past 6 months, we have generated 30 programs with 1.417 participants covering 9 main sectors industry. During Covid-19 we worked together with Techstars to run Global Online Startup Weekend Covid-19 in Indonesia, involving 6 hub partners and 30+ speakers and mentors. During 2 weeks, the programs had received 1200+ applicants and gathered 250+ ideas. It was the biggest Online Startup Weekend Covid-19 in Southeast Asia.
Through these programs we have increased digital entrepreneurs awareness in public, there are more than 800k users and customers impacted by the programs and 4.000+ direct jobs are created. All of these are possible because of the highly efficient team and local partners in each city that KUMPUL has.
In the next 5 years, we are targeting 24 cities, where there are 180 millions citizens. 25% are within the age of 18-35 years old (45 millions people are young generation). Among that, 80% have basic knowledge about the internet but only 18% of them have explored more on the digital opportunity and tech innovation. Within 5 years, we are planning to educate 1.5 million young generations and convert them to be digital entrepreneurs.
Data shows that 49% of the citizens are women, but women only took up 26% of all entrepreneurs in Indonesia. Empowering the young generation and developing their skills as well as their mindset will lead women to gain confidence in themselves and take up more challenges in building a business or growing their career.
To make sure that the programs are sustained, participants will fill survey data about their skills and income (before-after) and join the alumni post-program. We will record all the teams, ideas, and their reports (from mentoring sessions and weekly check-in) with our platform, PUTIH where all the documentation of the progress can be found. The platform can used by participants and partners to check on schedules and opportunities related with the programs.
In order for the systems to stay for more than five years, we are going to focus on building a digital ecosystem in each province. Develop and equip all components for the ecosystem to be ready (mentor’s training to develop skill sets to grow in each area).
Potential economic gains from digital technologies are enormous, but with new opportunities come new challenges as well. Inequalities have increased between the party that has been exposed, and who’s not. These gaps are due to many factors, including a lack of digital entrepreneurship role models and a lack of digital skills, several recent studies show that many obstacles to business creation (e.g. lack of skills, access to finance) carry over into the digital economy, which affects seniors and women more.
This was worsened by the geographic condition in Indonesia that consists of islands, as an archipelagic country (more than 17k islands) that full of culture and diversity with more than 700 languages/accents and 450 cultures. As remarkable as it looks, it becomes harder to get the knowledge spread and implemented because maintaining the same quality of facilities and access across the country is a struggle. Right now, out of 265 million people, there are more than 180 million internet users in Indonesia, but 55% is still coming from Java. This is why the income distribution and productivity differs greatly as how technological innovation diffuses within economies and interacts with market conditions matters.
However, is not the sole reason for the rising inequalities. Policies will need to be more responsive to the new dynamics of the digital economy to achieve outcomes that are more inclusive, government and private sectors have been trying to tackle these challenges but it is not enough as some of the efforts are redundant and not sustainable.
Because of geographical location it become hard to reach local society to deliver capacity building program, there are several issue like logistic, infrastructure, etc.
To achieve our goal, it is essential to build partnership with local and national government to enable us unlocking certain authority within the city to better implement the programs. But, because of the complicated bureaucracy of government at the national level, we are engaging local startup ecosystem builder directly for the faster route.
We have established partnerships with the ICT Ministry, Ministry of Tourism & Creative Economy, and East Java Governor to implement the programs.Within one to two years, we are planning to onboard another ministry as well such as the Ministry of Education. By connecting government/strategic stakeholders with local startup ecosystem builder, we can open a lot of access to the local society as well.

We have 29 full time staff, 13 part time staff, and around 150 contractors worker that work at local startup ecosystem that scattered in 24 cities across Indonesia.
Our team has experience running programs from all over the world. With our Key staff that has worked in international organizations such as Google, UN, etc., we are able to leverage on our existing networks and combined experience to run such a program.
Our lead also affiliated with Coworking Indonesia Association as the President of the association, that's why we have access to local coworking space across Indonesia.
Some of our mid level team members are also among those who have worked within organizations that have helped the remote regions of Indonesia through other growth and impact programs as well.
Additionally, many of our junior team members are from the generation of young digital talents from across Indonesia. We tend to recruit aspiring entrepreneurs and being with us helps them build their own network and understanding of what they need to grow as entrepreneurs
Kumpul has already a network of over 44 spaces and 6 community partners across Indonesia. In addition to generating interest for potential founders to startup in the digital entrepreneurship space, hundreds of mentors have been developed across at least 25 cities so far across Indonesia.
Kumpul, working together with their global partners, Techstars, has collaborated with the different partners in the Startup Weekend Indonesia© program, where Kumpul 5x the previous years numbers of events, allowing more than 1200 participants to participate in the program, as compared to 300 in the previous year.
Kumpul also brought the 1000StartupDigital© program, a program from the ICT Ministry to at least 15 ecosystems across Indonesia, bringing digital economy awareness to over 40,000 participants, and training hundreds of mentors within a 6 months timespan.
Kumpul recently partner with Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to bring BEKUP (Baparekraf for Startup) Program that will be executed in 5 different city, focused on creative economy sector.
We believe that entrepreneurs are crucial in pushing forward a country's economic development. Our vision is to distribute equal opportunities for entrepreneur's growth across Indonesia. We do that through the coworking players as they are the local startup ecosystem builders. Coworking players have very important roles during and post-crisis. Our ability to be the super-connectors, to engage relevant networks and communities is crucial in pushing forward the social and economic development.
To transform into digital entrepreneurship and grow their entrepreneurship skills, together with Techstars and ICT Ministry, we distribute their program through the local startup ecosystem builder so then local entrepreneur will get courses on how to build startups (build team, MVP, legal, administration, business plans). These entrepreneurs later will get mentoring opportunities with successful startup founders and practitioners to grow and scale their business up. Potential startups will get the chance to pitch in front of venture capitals.
- Organizations (B2B)
As a backbone and core system to support the startup ecosystem, we will raise fund for PUTIH through venture capital that focuses on a tech startup, but in parallel we craft a lot of retail product on behalf of market validation that also gain more revenue. We are also talk to corporation and government for sponsorship and projects on programs that support startup ecosystem in Indonesia.
We apply Solve because we want to expand our network, and bring more international player & curriculum to be implemented in local communities. By on-boarding more international player, we hope that we can increase capacity building program quality, resulted in increasing participant capability as well so they can reach higher level of their knowledge and implement it into society.
We want to help local startup players so they will have opportunity to grow their business therefore we try to bring more stakeholders into the startup ecosystem. Solve have network that we know by getting inside Solve's ecosystem we will have more step towards our goal.

- Solution technology
- Funding and revenue model

The World Bank stated that over the past 50 years Indonesia has sustained an average annual growth rate of 5.6% in GDP, with strong economic growth and substantial decreases in extreme poverty, which as a result enabled the country to achieve a middle-income status. The government itself has been trying to improve the economical condition of Indonesia.
Since our country is still a developing country we need to look at international player as benchmark towards more advance country, because of this fact, we try to bridge that by collaborating with international player like Techstars, the result is amazing. We know by collaborating with more international player, we can improve the level of the program more. That's why we want to collaborate with Solve, and connect as well with Solve's network.
We want to explore more about company that focused on innovation especially in Global South Country like Indonesia. Also we would love to connect with similar organization that also deliver capacity building program, in order to benchmark and improve our solution. Global fund will be important as well to boost the GDP of digitization in Indonesia, especially Indonesia is a big country with huge potential.
We are paying high attention to empowering women in entrepreneurship. According to the World Bank’s report (2016), with all the women population in Indonesia, almost 26% are considered active entrepreneurs (about 22 million). But female CEO’s are only getting 2.7% of overall funding from Venture Capital, while companies with women founders tend to outperform those with male founders by 63%. This is likely to happen because of a shortage of women in the funding industry due to the lack of training opportunities which made Indonesian women severely disadvantaged in both the economy and society.
We are establishing partnerships with a lot of organizations to create a women friendly environment where all women can comfortably learn new skills and get to see role models in this male-dominated industry. Our program by far has at least 35% female participants and we are planning to increase it to 50% in the next 5 years.
We believe that entrepreneurs are crucial in pushing forward a country's economic development. Our vision is to distribute equal opportunities for entrepreneur's growth across Indonesia. Collaborating with bigger player is always a strategic partnership for us, especially when we can learn from them. The GM Prize on Good Jobs and Inclusive Entrepreneurship is aligned with our vision, we always loved to work together with another organization with similar vision.
Our capacity building program will get recorded on our platform called PUTIH (Program Utilization Information Hubs)
In PUTIH, we will quantify the program quality by defining the most important parameter and bring hubs to the table to pick which program is suitable for their local communities. When hubs running their desired Kumpul's program, we also measured their performance and deliverables so we can derive the Hubs performance metric. By knowing hubs performance metric and program quality metric, big data and AI will generate insight and match making which program is suitable for hubs and vice versa automatically.
Also by tracking entrepreneur journey via Anak Kumpul platform, we applies machine learning to matchmaking the entrepreneur with our program. By integrate those 3 technology we believe our platform can deliver real impact to bigger audience and help Indonesia reach it's economic growth
