Lumitics
Food waste is a global problem and plagues every commercial kitchen that produces food. According to the Boston Consulting Group, globally we throw away about 1.6 billion tons of food each year.
At the kitchen level, from the point food enters a kitchen, 1/5 gets loss or wasted. Research has also shown that as much as 50% of what is being produced for buffets gets wasted. Not only is this an opportunity for environmental sustainability, this is also an economic opportunity as food or ingredients wasted represent actual dollars lost to a F&B business.
Across the food value chain, better measurement and monitoring of food loss and waste is needed because what gets measured gets managed. Currently there is no efficient and seamless process for kitchens to measure food loss and waste.
The main reason why kitchens today find it hard to tackle their food waste effectively is because they often lack visibility of their food waste situation.
How can one be expected to tackle their food waste problem effectively if they don’t even know what is being thrown away, how much is being thrown away and when this waste is being generated.
We’ve built Insight and Insight Lite, our smart food waste trackers for the hospitality and airline industry respectively, that is able to seamlessly measure and track all food waste thrown away in kitchens using sensors and our proprietary image recognition technology. The data acts as a feedback loop to empower kitchens to make better decisions in their procurement and production thus minimising their food waste.
For example, if we can tell the buffet restaurant in a hotel that for the last 30 days, their top wasted item from their lunch buffet service is ‘roast beef’ and on average they throw away 10kg of it each lunch service, they can use this data to better plan production for future buffet services.
Our solution serves large hotels and airlines. We've spend a lot of our time seeking to understand kitchen operations and the main challenges Chefs face when trying to tackle their food waste problem meaningfully.
We've built our products with Chefs and kitchen operations in mind. This is why there is a huge emphasis on our product in the seamlessly of it given that back of house kitchen operations are fast paced and busy in nature.
Our solution will give Chefs the visibility they need so they can take back control of their food waste and take actionable steps to reducing it.
- Improve supply chain practices to reduce food loss, scale new business models for producer-market connections, and create low-carbon cold chains
Our solution helps the largest food waste producers better manage their food waste and be more sustainable. Tackling food waste has a huge indirect impact on various communities and populations who are affected by climate change because food waste contributes to 6% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
- Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in one or, ideally, several communities, which is poised for further growth
- A new application of an existing technology
We do have 2 other competitors in this space - Winnows and LeanPath. While Winnows and LeanPath have a similar solution as our where we all track and measure food waste, both their solutions have a very manual identification process. Users would have to click through 5 screens on a tablet to identify whatever is being thrown away, making that a very tedious and manual process.
Our solution uses image recognition thus cutting out that whole process and making the user experience seamless which is key to kitchens which are fast paced in nature.
This single point of difference has enabled us to win over many clients who previously used Winnow/Leanpath.
