OFSP Digital Bullet
OFSP is a solution that will promote production, preperation and consumption of orange fleshed sweet potato in the rural community. Avoidable blindness and prematurity are on the increase because of lack of Vit A in most of the rural peoples meals.
The problems are attributed to lack of access to Vit A rich foods or poor preperation of the foods.
Orange fleshed sweet potato are rich in Vit A and can be easily produced by rural households as it requires very less imputs.
The solution will take orange sweet potato production lessons to the community through visual audio means and will be explaining and demonstrating the process of growing sweet potato and how to prepare dishes and make them part of their routine meals.
Whatsaap groups will a be created and tips of on growing and use orange fleshed sweet potato will be shared.
Avoidable blindness ranks high in Malawi and africa as a whole.A national survey conducted in 2001 showed subclinical signs of vitamin A deficiency to be highly prevalent among young children. Routine supplementation with vitamin A is implemented but programmes for ensuring a more adequate intake of vitamin A rich foods for vulnerable groups, i.e. women and young children, are lacking.
Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children and increases the risk of disease and death from severe infections. In pregnant women VAD causes night blindness and may increase the risk of maternal mortality. Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem in more than half of all countries, especially in Africa and South-East Asia, hitting hardest young children and pregnant women in low-income countries
Food-based strategies are lacking to improve the micro-nutrient status of the population in a sustainable way. The current favourable agricultural context is a unique opportunity for introducing agricultural diversification for improving the nutritional quality of diets.
The nutritional status of the Malawian population remains critical. Although short-term interventions such as supplementation and fortification still need to be reinforced, investment in long-term food based strategies is urgently needed.
The Solution provides practical information on production of Orange fleshed sweet potato through video presentations and tutorials in local language on projectors .
Sharing of information among member groups through whatsapp groups on how to grow orange fleshed sweet potato, how to prepare into a variety of dishes that can be adopted as routine.
Potato vines are shared shared to the local farmers who are in groups and team leaders are chosen who are able to read local language so that the can be sharing the information to fellow members in the groups.Supervision, leadership and guidance is provided on a regular basis.
Planting during dry seasons with help of irrigation is encouraged to ensure continuity of food reserves in the households.
The solution mostly targets families in the reproductive age group and children who need alot of VIT A for immunity growth and vision.
The population in need of this is identified during visits to hospital. Martenal complications are from nutritional disorders from VIT A deficiency are a common site.Community screening has identified many children suffering from Night blindness from VIT A deficiency.
The people in the community will each have a piece of land to plant orange fleshed sweet potato and will be sharing and discussing information in their groups.
The martenal complications from nutritionl disorders will remarbly drop and avoidable blindness will be prevented providing afuture fro chidren and young mothers.
The communities will also be economically empowered as as they will be able to sell some produce through out the year
- Promote the shift towards low-impact, diverse, and nutritious diets, including low-carbon protein options
A good population does farming but mostly the produce are carbohydrates. It is easy to introduce orange fleshed sweet potatoes to them siting the benefits of Vit A to for our vision, immunity and how vital it is in pregnancy. They will easily embrace the solution as it will fall into their routine work.To add the benefits are so immerse. This being a crop that does not need much imput,it will no put any financial burden on them but on the contrary add value to their financial needs
- Pilot: An organization deploying a tested product, service, or business model in at least one community
- A new application of an existing technology
Projectors will be used to to impart information to the people on the production of sweet potato.
Smart phones will be used to share information in groups as well as recipes on foods using orange fleshed sweet potato.
The technology has worked in isolated instances in Malawi like with Perishagro that encourages agriculture diversification in other other countries.
- Audiovisual Media
- Software and Mobile Applications
The theory will completely have an impact on the problem as as it will be providing the community with power to provide a solution to problem which is right in their community. They see the blind children from Vit A deficiency everyday. Most women have exprienced martenal complications from nutritional disorders like Vit A definciency.
The community will start seeing less and cases with vit A definciency complications and this will motivate them to work even more seeing the solution is coming from themselves.
Resources wasted in helping those with the consequential complications will be reserved and this will offset budget gaps in other areas of health.
This will have profound impact to country as these debilitating diseases will be controlled and people will be productive and boost the economy.
The suplus that will be sold will make the communities financially stable

Now it serves 202000.Iwill serve 1000000 next year and 10000000 in five years
Next years' goals are to develop and translate educational material into local languages .
Procure Projectors that run on Solar Energy
Multiply orange orange fleshed sweet potato vines for seed
Form groups
In the next years
identify markets for surplus products
Open a milling and packaging company for orange fleshed sweet potato
Scale up to other parts of the country
Current barriers aere
1.Lack of seed
2.Illiteracy
3.Shartage of resources.
In the next five years
Factory Machinery
Gadgets
Will overcome these by translating materials
Procuring and Multiplying enough seed
Start irrigation
Proposal writing to request for funding towards acquisition of resources and machinery

1.Paul Gondwe.Agriculture Officer
2.Richard Chitedze.Clinical Officer
3.Chifundo Jere.Farmer
4.Peter .Seed research Officer
Paual Gondwe has graduated from College and studied Agriculture.
He is well versed in different crop production
Richard is a Clinical officer who will be able to link the clinical practice in terms of human physiology an the role of vitamin A in our body. The outcome if it is deficient.
Chifundo Jere is a Farmer who is able to pilot and explain the to the local population showing that it is a possible solution that anyone can do.
Peter is a an agriculture research officer who brings updates and new technologies in orange fleshed sweet potato production
No company so far
The business model is that first we provide seed for free which will be equal for everyone and then when they want a larger area to plant.they will be buying seed from us.
After we are well established,we will be packaging sweet potato flour and sell to the community for a profit
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
Solve has shown interest in promoting food security which is our goal.
I believe Solve has an interst in well being and willing to support a course that promotes wellbeing.
I optmstic that Solve can help us with procurement of projectors, laptops, smartphones and running costs.
- Product/service distribution
- Funding and revenue model
- Marketing, media, and exposure
Our partenership with Solve would help us excel and reach independence while being mentored by Solve
We would like to partener with organisations working in the area of Tubers like sweet potatoes to help us share knowledge.
We would also like to partner with organisations interested in orange fleshed sweet potato market
We would like also to partener with potential donors in orange fleshed sweet potato production
Malawi has a laarge number of refugees.
Food supplies are not adequate and nutritional disorders are highly prevalent.
This funding will help us introduce the solution in these areas and ensure food security is maximised and Vit A is readily available on every meal from orange fleshed sweet potato
Women are vulnerable if diets lack Vit A.Martenal complications have been from vit A deficiency in rural Malawi.
This would really support and improve maternal well-being
It is the technology that will help us take information to the communities
