Dairy product improvement
Problems
Ethiopia is first livestock number in Africa but very low productivity which produce only a maximum of 2 liters/day due to many reasons mainly due to genetic factor. Although Artificial insemination for dairy cattle genetic improvement started before 40 years there are only 1 to 2% cross breeds due to inefficient/ poor artificial insemination (AI) service delivery. On the other hand there is poor husbandry and input supply practices and no advisory services in the sector.
Solutions
Use of digital or camera assisted artificial insemination (AI) and provide training to dairy farmers and technicians to improve AI service
Provide advisory service on dairy husbandry and input supply.
Provide practical training to farmers
If scaled up it will benefit in
Improve dairy cattle productivity where by increase income of dairy farmers It will also increase access of nutritious food to children and women there by improve health
The specific problems i want to solve are avoid skill gaps of artificial insemination service though use of digital/camera assisted artificial insemination and use of portable ultrasound to identify solve fertility problems in dairy cattle. Technicians are inefficient in their service. There is extended calving interval and productivity is very low, Dairy cattle are manged poorly and productivity is low. this can be tackled through training and coaching on the day to day husbandry practices. My solution is able to solve these problems and increase productivity of dairy cattle to benefit the farmers and consumers of the dairy products in Ethiopia.
Establish efficient Artificial insemination (AI) center, Establish dairy consultancy firm
Improve breeding practice, improve husbandry practice, improve input supply to the dairy sector.
This is done though use of skilled service providers to provide efficient service of AI, Use of camera assisted AI gun and use of portable ultrasound to solve infertility problems
The solution is efficient service provision to dairy farmers. In doing so provide advise and consultancy services. diary cattle improvement and proved husbandry practice will have an impact in reducing greenhouse gas emission by reducing productivity per cow. The solution will be address by announcing the new solution to the sector , phone call and regular visit to the customers.
- Promote the shift towards low-impact, diverse, and nutritious diets, including low-carbon protein options
The identified challenges and the proposed solutions are directly related with sustainable Food systems challenge as they all relate with food system and are responsible for sustainable milk and milk product supply which are high protein sources and are related to develop people which are resilient to climate change and is capable to reduce livestock number by improving productivity per individual which reduces dairy contribution of methane to the atmosphere.
- Concept: An idea being explored for its feasibility to build a product, service, or business model based on that idea
- A new application of an existing technology
The competitors in this sector are government extension workers and Artificial insemination (AI) providers for dairy sector. No private sector is involved yet in Ethiopia. If there are some only concentrated to the capital city , Addis ababa. All competitors in this sector are professionally at low level only 1 to 6 months trained technicians who do not well understand the physiology of animals only trained how to operate the AI procedure. Professionals in this team are a masters ranged from diploma to masters level and have trained special practical training in and outside the country.
On the other hand the solution will use digital application of AI camera to provide efficient AI service. And portable ultrasound to identify infertility problems and provide treatment solutions.
What is more, there will be coaching and contentious contacts with customers.
The technology i will use include new application of an existing technology. The new technologies i will use are use of camera assisted artificial insemination gun /catheter which make easy for the work of artificial insemination in dairy cattle as well as identifying reproductive problems and the status of heat period and portable ultrasound which is used to identify reproductive health problems in dairy cattle.
The camera assisted AI gun/catheter is use visualized disposition of semen in the cows' reproductive tract. In this case one is able to see where the catheter is to deposit the semen. The advantage is not only limited to this but it also can visualize the abnormalities of the vagina and the exact heat stage of the animal. the video and image are given bellow.

currently only around 50 people
in one year time around 650,600 people will be served
In five years around 2,200,000 people will be benefited
Within the next five years the goal is to ensure food security and reduce malnutrition of the people .
this will be done by improving income if dairy cattle farmers and increase access of nutritious food to the people
Lack of Equipment used to improve the sector, financial problem and skill gaps. Lack of connection between service providers and producers and consumers.
The lack of equipment and materials will be overcomes by searching the grants to purchase. And the skill gas will be solved by training and the lack of linage will be solved by establishing business to business (B2B) meetings, workshops and adverts
