Women and Girls Digital Champions
Over 3.6 million Rwandan students and 94,600 teachers are out of school today due to COVID-19. The schools closure carry high social and economic costs for people across communities (UNESCO 2020) like Interrupted learning, confusion and stress for teachers, parents and child unprepared for distance and home schooling, GAP in childcare, increased exposure to violence and exploitation and Social isolation. However, substantial evidence shows that the most affected are women and girls (Women Win). IshuriOnline is committed to strengthening the capacities of 2,200 girls and young women students and teachers to access quality distance and home schooling education while also equipping them to accelerate E-learning integration in Rwandan schools. Accessing IshuriOnline blended learning (asynchronous and synchronous) system will reduce the barriers that prevent girls and young women from reaching key learning milestones while also mitigating the impact of traditional teaching and school closure.
According to INESCO, The pandemic has disrupted learning for 9 out of 10 students around the world (87%). The adoption of distance learning is far behind in low and emerging economies. Over 3.6 millions Rwandan and 94,600 teachers are out of school due to COVID-19. this crisis compound existing inequalities and disproportionately affect women and girls in education and if we don’t keep the doors open for education, it will be a challenge to ensure children and youth return and stay in school when schools reopen after closures. This is especially true of protracted closures and when economic shocks place pressure on children to work and generate income for financially distressed families and the teachers as well. Other challenged includes interrupted learning, confusion and stress for teachers, gap in child care, increased exposure to violence and exploitation, Social isolation, as well as Working parents who decided to leave their jobs and take care of their children. This results in wage loss and tend to negatively impact productivity
By bringing women and girls at the center of quality distance and homeschooling in Rwandan communities to address the effects of COVID-19 on education, IshuriOnline has built a blended learning management system(LMS) to strengthen the capacity of 2200 women and girls in education to accelerate the adoption of distance learning in their homes and schools while also mitigating the effects of traditional teaching and school closure
Ishurionline will work with 2,200 women and young girls who are currently out of quality education (2,000 students, 200 teachers) and will impact the lives of 55,000 households in 30 districts of Rwanda (1 Digital Champion to 25 households),
Women targeted should have education background with at least 1 year experience in teaching while young girls are students in high school (11 years to 22 years old) who have the passion to become IshuriOnline Digital Champions. the two groups targeted will be prepared for a self-regulated learning and working environment to transform themselves from self‐actualization to goal‐realization. this will be evidenced by working condition and benefits improved among the 200 women teachers, while 2,000 gain opportunities offered by the ecosystem that integrate elearning systems in the communities
As we develop this solution, IshuriOnline has 25 teachers already registered 70% are women and have participated in the design of different solutions as well as conducting the user experience at learn.ishurionline.rw
- Reduce the barriers that prevent girls and young women—especially those living in conflict and emergency situations—from reaching key learning milestones
The problem the intervention is addressing is the lack of capacity to adopt distance and homeschooling and its social& Economic impact on the communities. The solution to equip 2200 women and girls respond to the government efforts to keep the doors open for education. the beneficiaries (2,200 women and young girls) will be given the opportunity to build their digital competencies while also impacting the communities. Our ultimate outcome is to reduce the barriers that prevent girls and young women to reach their learning objectives while also solving community problems as they explore E-learning as a hidden opportunity
- Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in one or, ideally, several communities, which is poised for further growth
- A new application of an existing technology
Young Girls and women (Teachers, and Children) are given an opportunity to develop interractive learning while also gaining skills and competencies to drive the transformational agenda in Rwandan Education to keep the learning open for education. 2200 women and young girls targeted in this project will become digital champions while also building a community of global learners in IshuriOnline learning and advance the status of schools' migration to E-learning.
