School Banks for Girls (SBG)
The socio-cultural practices make the girl to be in a great vulnerability and risk, for reasons such as overload housework, distance to school, rape, harassment and other forms of human rights violation, a fact that which forces her to leave school so early.
Therefore ensuring financial support to a school teenager girl in oriented to education, this situation will be minimised.
This project will yield several results, but based on the single main result: economic support to girls to promote their progression to secondary education. Once financially self-sustaining girls, other transversal outcomes results are also expected: (1) discouragement of early marriages and reduction of girls’; (2) girls active participation in decision-making; (3) economic and social empowerment; (4) incentive and encouragement of other underage girls for school attendance; (5) discouragement of socio-cultural practices that inhibit the girl, through community involvement in their school progress and in the management of their funds.
Usually in Mozambique, with more emphasis in the countryside, girls have been the most disadvantaged in various fields (social, economic and cultural) especially with higher failure of school progress rate against boys. The first reason is early marriages, because they are seen as sources of income to parents and guardians. A girl is bound to be a mere house servant.
The social intervention measures to minimize this situation have been little or not available, especially in patrilineal areas where the bride price practice is the habit. As a result, in the first classes in primary school, most classrooms have the majority girls, but progressions to secondary level most classrooms are full of boys.
The perception of the project TEENAGER GIRL WE WANT is that main problems that girls face in communities such as of barrier to adequate education and their progress in schools is basically economic, which goes through socio-cultural norms.
The project will be divided into two phases. The first will consist of a research phase, which will map adolescent girls in primary education, as well as the difficulties they face in their day-to-day (Creation of a Baseline). This done, the second phase (Intervention Phase) the project will create School Banks for Girls (SBG) in schools, for groups identified through the assistance of bank institutions and local governments.
Each girl in the bank group will have her share. The girls with the best attendance and better grades will get part of their funds to conduct a profitable economic activity, with the help of the officials identified by the project. At the end of the year, the girls transiting to the secondary level will have a more of the funds for another economic activity and onward her admission to the secondary level. However, the girls that will fail class, but she did perform in attendance will have their funds, but very less comparing to the girl transiting to secondary level.
The main targets of this phase are: young girls aged 13-20, teachers, community leaders and local government authorities.
We a setting up a Community Dialogue to understand they needs. On these dialogue GADC intends to Felt they needs as the dreams and wants of that community and girls. What are they saying they want? Also intends to understand Expressed needs as are inferred by observing the actions of community members. What are they showing you they need? Each girl will be allocated their Quarterly funds according to her performance. These funds will be used for an economic activity to be held responsible by parents or guardians duly registered by the School Banks. In the second Quarter of the school year, the girls with the best attendance and better grades will get part of their funds to conduct a profitable economic activity, with the help of the officials identified by the project. At the end of the year, the girls transiting to the secondary level will have a more of the funds for another economic activity and onward her admission to the secondary level.
