Girl child friendly school Environment
1. The problem to be solved is girl children usually drop out of school when they reach adolescent stage and start menstration, schools do not have adequate services to address this: for example no separate latrines for boys and girls. As a result girl children go for early marriages.
The proposed solution is to provide privacy and sanitary services, wash rooms for adolescent girls coupled with adolescent sexual and reproductive health education and counseling by senior women teachers
The solution will improve on equal participation of women and men in development and decision making globally. It will also improve on literacy levels of women
Communities don’t understand their role in WaSH promotion in their schools and the importance of Education especially to girl child who are seen as ‘value for cows’(pride price)
Senior woman and Man teachers have little knowledge on their roles and responsibilities and as well Health committees are absent in all schools
Limited approaches to WaSH promotion in schools coupled with Over 65% of the schools have latrine/toilet pupils stance ratio above 1:70
The solution is to provide separate latrines/toilets and wash rooms for girls, provide sanitary pads and access to safe water and soap.
Train Senior women teachers to give counseling to adolescent girls
Improved child friendly learning environments and processes to promote equity in access to primary education.
Improved education planning and monitoring at school, sub county and district levels.
it only needs trainings
The target population in girls in rural schools who drop out before completing primary level. Their needs are understood through community voices and school records.
The solution will address their needs through increased understanding and planning for WaSH in schools by the stakeholders, increased availability of information/data on state of WaSH in schools
increased retention of girl child in schools.
- Increase the number of girls and young women participating in formal and informal learning and training
High rates of girl child school drop out due to bad school environments, therefore by improving on the friendly environment, girl children will find it good for them to continue with education
- Growth: An organization with an established product, service, or business model rolled out in one or, ideally, several communities, which is poised for further growth
- A new application of an existing technology
Its innovative because it targets to increase on the number of girls completing primary school
The technology/ approach is existing
The technology/approach is used by Netherlands development organization SNV in Uganda and has yielded positive results.
- Behavioral Technology
The solution has analyzed the finding and shared them with schools according to the extent to which they affect learning. Special focus will be given to the girl child needs.
