Briskila Emefesi Women Foundation(BEWOF)
The project seeks to addressed the problem of the girl child/women education as majority of the population in the project community are either school dropout or have never been to school due to some certain factors which include large family, tradition, poverty, child marriage, Gender norms and stereotypes, discrimination etc.
The programme seeks to change the negative attitude towards girls
child/women education through awareness creation among traditional and religious leaders in the community regarding the importance of girl child/women education and also provide educational support to the girl/women in the community
the actualization of the project would go a long way in improving access to improved, enhanced and quality education for the girl child/women and production of young girls/women whom are educationally sound and would in turn change the narrative and take influential positions in the society and the country at large that would cause a total transformation and reformation.
Educating girls contributes significantly to the development of a nation thus the need for the necessity in educating the girl child/women can never be over emphasized.Nigeria’s out-of-school population is the largest in the world and it is growing. Of the staggering 10.5 million out-of-school children in Nigeria today, the majority are girls/women; with majority in the northern part of the country which Bauchi State is no exception.
within the northern part of the country which Bauchi State is no exception.
Over the years, several efforts have been made to increase education and enhance the literacy rates of the girls child/women. Despite several programmes and social schemes, the problem of lack of girl/women education is persistent most especially the marginalized communities. Various surveys reveal that only half of the girls/women living in rural areas registered in school and also the school dropout ration of girls/women is significantly higher in rural areas. Women and Girls are often treated as second-class citizens in our society. They are forced to marry at a tender age because of religious, cultural and traditional beliefs. These barbaric attitudes towards female children must stop therefore the need to invest toward the girl child/women access to education.
The programme seeks to change the negative attitude towards girls child/women education through education and awareness creation among traditional and religious leaders as well as disadvantaged community regarding the importance of girl child/women education. This could change their perception that the role of women/girls in the society is limited to being home-makers who are expected to cater for and serve the men at home, and that the rightful place for a woman is the home or kitchen.
The structure below will be used to identify and implement the girl child/women education programme:
The project team will train educational committees at the community level. The committee will comprise of women leaders, youth, heads of primary and secondary schools and local government officials in the community who will be responsible for identifying the target beneficiaries. Also, the committee will facilitate and effectively manage the project.
A total of at least 100 selected girls/women in the community will be offered education workshop and have access to a trusted female mentor; at the same time, it will still be a subset of girls/women in that community who will be targeted for material and academic support based on their needs.
Miri community is located in Bauchi Local Government Area, about 7km away from the state capital. it has a population of over 10,000 consisting of men, women, youth and children who are rural farmers and herdsmen.
Miri community is one of the most neglected suburb areas in Bauchi local government area. Worst still, their daughters and women are not allowed the rights of schooling. This project seeks to directly and meaningfully improved the lives of the girl child and young women in the community as over 80% of the girl child/young in the community are not educated. In a bench mark survey, the result reveals that girls and women are denied their rights to schooling in preference to male child education. BEWOF used the focal group discussion with the women group and the girl child and later used a pairwise ranking methods to arrived at their topmost need following the need assessment survey conducted by the organization some times back. the solution will go along way in increasing the number of educated girls/women in the community which may some day become future leaders.
