Mobile Maternal Care Hub
85% Ugandan women face unintended, abandoned & unofficial pregnancies, of which 65% live in villages and hard to reach areas leading to high levels of unplanned births, unsafe abortions, maternal injury and death, because adolescent girls and young women are involved in premarital sex, they are never married or unofficially married with high risk for maternal mortality since they have no health insurance and also live in villages or hard to reach areas, most of them are abandoned because the pregnancy was not official so men tend to withdraw their responsibility for taking care.
This solution will develop a digital app acting as a mobile maternal care hub managed by trained unemployed health workers as ambassadors of maternal health care for women in discussion. This will be scaled globally to unofficially married women who have sex and fall victims of unintended, abandoned & unofficial pregnancies hence lacking maternal health care.
85% of women in Kasese are very poor, this increases their chances of being engaged in relationships for material gain, in so doing, they end up having premarital sex that leads to unintended, abandoned & unofficial pregnancy with men who are not ready to take up responsibility. This therefore expose them to several risks like unsafe abortions, maternal death, unsafe delivery and lack of maternal health education. at least 15% of the 85% find their way abroad for employment that can earn them good money which exposes them to mental slavery. while abroad, they are seen to be normal human beings with feelings for sex and when they have sex they also fall victims of unintended, abandoned & unofficial pregnancies and this is too risky for them as they have no insurance to access maternal health care especially when they are not officially married. It is observed that use of contraceptives in Uganda is very low. Only 5% of these women are able to use modern contraceptive methods and the rest do not use contraceptives yet they do not want to become pregnant but become pregnant by mistake and unsafe abortion poses significant costs that is nearly
US$150 per abortion.
A Mobile Maternal care hub is a solution that will use an integrated digital app for women facing unintended, abandoned & unofficial pregnancies that will provide an intersection for maternal health care services between unofficially married women and mobile professional health workers working as an independent body providing maternal health care services to the local community and hard to reach areas. The digital app will use a GPS system to give location and send a signal for the required services and an alert will be sent to the available health care personnel's for a quick intervention.
2. The digital app will also provide maternal health education and care for new born babies and will give warning messages for certain health conditions, give recommendations for maternal services, career guidance and cancelling for a safe pregnancy environment with reduced stress and anxiety.
3. The solution will transform lives of unofficially married women who are victims of unintended, abandoned & unofficial pregnancies and transition from unsafe births to safe births even with no care from men who impregnated them. The unemployed health professionals will also transition their livelihood from idleness to resourceful health practices working as ambassadors of change in promoting maternal health.
This solution will impact lives of poor women who are not able to access proper maternal services yet they have a right to sex so that they receive equal treatment without discrimination because every life matter irrespective of their situation and background. This will build confidence within unofficially married women so that they have safe births and care for their new born diseases and build a strong next generation of new born babies.
