Sampingan
Sampingan is changing the future of work. More than 60% of jobs in Indonesia are informal, resulting in the blue-collar workforce being underemployed and often underpaid. We are committed to providing everyone with equal access to additional earning opportunities.
Equal access to earning opportunities by connecting the underemployed, blue-collar workforce to simple, non-binding jobs and tasks that can result in additional income for them.
We are talking about a class of people whose monthly per-capita consumption falls under $200 but aspire to invest in gold, stay-at-home mothers who want to do more than wait for their children to come home by running their own small reselling business. These are the people who would take on sporadic jobs in order to have just a bit more cash to hold on to.
The Indonesian population today is made up of 30% middle-class and 45% aspiring middle class. Assuming half of them are productive working population, and that 30% of the workforce is underemployed, the size of population Sampingan can have an impact on comes to nearly 30 million people. Today, Sampingan has provided earning opportunities to over 150,000 agents across 25 cities in Indonesia.
Underemployment stems from the big informal sector in Indonesia, which constitutes mainly of agriculture and construction jobs. It is estimated that around 60% of employment in the country can be considered informal. The practice of informal jobs has resulted in much of the workforce having a low and unstable income, making it difficult for low-income families difficult meet even basic needs, and often working sporadic jobs in order to earn more cash. This is where Sampingan comes in. Our solution is in the form of what these people need: earning opportunities.

Sampingan focuses on the Indonesian blue-collar workforce, which mainly consists of low-skilled labour. To help them earn more, Sampingan provides opportunities that do not require complex administrative pre-requisites (which they may not have) nor specific skills. Our tasks are concrete enough to provide a sense of accomplishment, but simple enough for anyone to complete.
The population that we are serving is no longer just looking for a job in its traditional sense. They are seeking to, first and foremost, earn more. This does not necessarily mean a new permanent job that binds them with a long-term contract with little to no clear earning increments. What they need is the opportunity to have additional sources of income.
We are providing our agents access to task-based, time-based, and reseller earning opportunities, leveraging multiple sources of income and opening doors to options that were not previously possible for them. Sampingan agents can choose to complete however many jobs they'd like at all times.
To businesses, we are allowing them a platform where they can continue to operate and scale efficiently by tapping into a massive amount of workforce, anytime, on their demand.
Currently, we have three types of earning opportunities available in our platform:
1. Task-based: pay-per-performance system, where the agents will be paid based on the approved task that is already passed our validation
2. Time-Based: temporary jobs from various industries;
3. Reseller: Sampingan's agents can purchase products and gain profit by reselling it to consumers.
We ensure that our agents able to use our platform to find their preferred jobs (task-based, time-based, or becoming reseller) that are suitable for them and also use our platform as their working and payment system. Any jobs or new products that are available from our clients are immediately available for our agents to choose to work on.
Any of these can be done in a few simple steps:
1. Agents discover the jobs or products;
2. Agent apply for jobs (for task and time-based) or purchase the products (reseller);
3. Agents can immediately start working on the task or to resell the products once they arrive, and can start earning.
- Increase opportunities for people - especially those traditionally left behind and most marginalized – to access digital and 21st century skills, meet employer demands, and access the jobs of today and tomorrow
- Upskill, reskill, or retrain workers in the industries most affected by technological transformations
- Growth
At our core, Sampingan wishes to cater to the underserved blue-collar workforce. While most talk of productivity discusses access to job opportunities, Sampingan focuses on access to earning opportunities; our goal is for everyone to earn what they need to earn, as opposed to merely working more jobs.
Commonly, when consumer products promote productivity, the products offered come in the form of the actual hand tools (faster machines, better tools), or, these days, "productive" loans for them to kickstart their small-to-medium businesses. We are not an outsourcing company; we are an income platform. Sampingan is innovative because we lead them to where it really matters: the additional income.

Currently, we have more than 150,000 active agents joined our workforce and deployed within 25 cities in Indonesia. In the next five years, we aim to serve 4 million population within Indonesia and 1 million in other Southeast Asia countries.
As a short term goal, we aim to improve and upskill the work quality of Sampingan's workforce to meet the job requirements.
Further, we believe that everyone should get equal access to jobs and earning opportunities and that is why we plan to expand our business to other Southeast Asia countries as our long term goal.
For our short term goal, we are lack of capacity and technical knowledge in the industries where we deployed our agents. In order to achieve this goal, we need to come up with standardization or working module, so it can help our agents to understand the business in the industry. In parallel, we believe that these outputs will benefit both to our agents in terms of increasing their qualifications and experiences and to the business, in which they have workers that know the business.
For the expansion of our business, we see that the challenge would be to understand the local regulations, especially employment regulation. This will be the first thing that we need to explore before tapping into this market.
Supports from and partnership with local governments and business actors in certain industries will be vital to achieving our short term goal, since they know the business practice and have technical knowledge on this. With this support, they can help us to build and create such standardization and the working module for our workforce.
On the other hand, legal support and introduction to the governments from the country where we expand our business will be useful for us to understand the concept of employment regulations in such countries before starting our business.

Since the establishment in September 2019, we have grown from a team of 3 to 42 full-time employees, 16 contract employees, 7 interns and 12 daily workers based in three big cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta.
Sampingan happened to graduate from Antler‘s startup program and was founded by three people, Wisnu Nugrahadi, Margana Mohamad, and Dimas Pramudya, graduates of Universitas Padjadjaran. Both Wisnu and Dimas were Senior Managers at Gojek before they left to found Sampingan. Margana owns and has experience in running an outsourcing business.
Sampingan has served over 90 companies from global consumer-goods to tech giants in Indonesia.
We help the enterprises, including SMEs, to scale by providing them with manpower support from our pre-vetted workforces, such as field workers, event staff, in-site workers, and logistics officers.
In addition to this, we also offer managed services to create a solution for business in certain industries by utilizing our workforce and Sampingan app. For example, we provide e-commerce companies with data tagging service for e-commerce companies and retail audit for FMCG companies.
Currently, we support our financial by raising investment and selling our services to enterprises. Our business model allows us to charge service fees for the works that we have provided to them.
Our current focus is to improve the quality of works and upskill the job performance of our workforce talents. With US$100,000, we plan to organise training programmes attended by experts and professionals from many industries to educate our workforce. After the training programme, we also aim to use this grant to create a standardization or working module for each industry which can be used by our agents as a baseline when they do the jobs.
