Live UX Lab 60+
The Live UX Lab 60+ solves two problems. On one hand, it is a way to understand how real people use real apps in real life. Considering shifts in banking, shopping, dating, mobility and health and how fast the population is ageing, is more than crucial that apps consider older people constrains in engaging with new interfaces. And why not turn their reports into a job they can do wherever they are? This idea is a result of 16 months of ethnography with elderly people in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Live UX Lab 60+ is a platform for clients, who can find the profiles they want and hire them. The report is submitted by whatsapp, the app older people are more familiar with (printscreens, audio, text, vídeo). Clients can receive raw data through whatsapp, or they can pay for a final report (opportunity for intergerational work).
In Sao Paulo, there are a large amount of old people that are willing to work. The work becomes a health issue. It helps them giving life a purpose, promotes sociability and learning, and is also an extra income to complement retirement. Although older people feel they are in the best moment of their life and full of energy, they know there is no space for them in the formal market or in the positions they had before. They are not interested in formal jobs, but in an occupation. They would like to contribute to a better society e to make the life of next generation of older people better. This kind of work would give financial gain, better self-steam and would help industry to make better apps for older people. The m-health sector which could improve the health specifically of this population depends on learning from what they can do and do, in the approach we call "from bellow". This proposal is consequence of 16 month ethnography in a middle class neighbourhood in Sao Paulo. I worked as a voluntary WhatsApp teacher during three semesters, engage in the group work 60+ and helped to mentor his projects. I also interviewed 30 people between 50 and 80 years old, addressing topics like ageing, health and smartphones.
The solution will address their need for a paid occupation, which would provide also gains in self-steam and sociability and mental health, once it would be a challenging and learning activity. By providing UX reports, they could help the industry to provide the very apps addressing them.
It is a platform where developers/industry can choose the 60+ users they want to test their products. When user accepts the job, he/she receives the link for app download through WhatsApp. All raw data (printscreens, videos, audios e text messages) are sent by whatsapp, the app older people use the most in Brazil. If clients want an analysis, they can pay professionals to do so. This could be another opportunity for creating intergenerational work opportunities (seniors could be recruited as consultants too).
- Support underserved people in fostering entrepreneurship and creating new technologies, businesses, and jobs
- Concept
The Live UX Lab 60+ is innovative because it uses an approach 'from below'. This means that we learned about what older people use their smartphones, how far they can go, and how their usage is concentrate in WhastApp. Based on this learning, we propose to use whatsapp to deliver our two promises: new opportunity of work and better apps for older people.
Knowing this population show their identity is based on the work. They are ready to transform anything in an occupation, including curating useful information to share with their peers. The Live UX Lab 60+ transforms this time and disposition into a useful activity with income generation and improving products and services they also use.

I spend 16 months with older people, engaging in their activities, learning from what they want and what they want to do. The working as WhatsApp teacher gave me also a clear idea of WhatsApp can do but also what other apps like Google Maps and Waze and Uber changed the way older people live.
