Innovative Education Solution for the Coming Millennium

English World brings classroom instruction to where the learners are using personalized video tutorial. Students shall be tutored for English proficiency to usher full access to the rich resources available online rendered in English language. Knowledge learned through video class shall also be passed to others using same video tutorial.

Most private schools and universities in Cambodia are adopting various strains of curriculum implemented within the confines of their respective school system while the public school’s curriculum is struggling to cope up with the international standards for their students to become competitive. Cities and provincial capitals may have professionally trained educators but poor villages still have teachers who have not finished formal educational training and cannot read and understand English language.

English World (EW) shall develop English video class tutorial to help intelligent and diligent students from poor villages become English proficient with the intention that it would open gates of opportunities for them to be at par with the students studying in the cities and provincial capitals, and eventually become internationally competitive.

EW shall use the available online technology particularly GoAnimate4schools to produce short video lessons that will serve as teacher’s standard guide to teach English. The teacher shall manage the students to listen and follow the instructions in the video class. There will be listening, speaking, writing and practice workshops facilitated by the teacher. A seminar workshop shall be conducted to the teachers using the video so that they could teach effectively to their students.

Khmer students would love to learn English and those who managed to communicate in English had proven to have improved their employability status. Learning English shall also open gates of educational advancements to students who will diligently seek specialized skills that would usher to international competency. Advance studies using online platform are becoming popular nowadays but are presented in English language. English video tutorial could open gates of opportunities to underprivileged Khmer students in poor villages.

This program can also be offered to other countries that desire to learn English language and become at par with the rest of English speaking countries.

Among the Southeast Asian Countries, Cambodia is one of the countries that depend so much on expat educators to train the future internationally competitive leaders of the country. Most expats, and even educated Khmer educators, prefer the more convenient and cosmopolitan centers like Phnom Penh and other major cities in the country where amenities abound.  As such, a lot of students from poor villages ended up learning from teachers who has no formal educational training thus learning is very discouraging that leads older students to opt migration to neighboring countries to work and earn. 

Khmer students love to study and learn despite meager conditions. Those who managed to learn little English from Christian missionaries serving in poor villages had proven themselves to be capable and competitive. The little English they knew opened gateways of opportunities for them to learn more as they started to communicate to wider communities.

English World will create English curriculum using video class tutorial to talented students in poor villages. The hunger for knowledge and desire for growth are good catalysts for learning. While learning they could also earn when they teach others using the same video tutorial

The program is comprised of 6 modules that are designed to be finished in 3 years (middle or senior high school levels). After finishing the program the students can already read, write, speak and achieve high level of comprehension on English language. Those who finished the program can already tutor other students effectively using the same video lessons. On the first year, the program shall be piloted in one selected district in one of the provinces in Cambodia. On the second year, the program shall be implemented in the whole province.  On the third year, it will be implemented nationwide.

The project shall use the online GoAnimate4schools video production tools that can be tailored in accordance to the needs of the students and the teachers/facilitators. The tools are so simple to use and requires only time, dedication and minimal capital investment to start the project. What makes the project unique is that the learning is not confined in the “online” platform but would be applied in real time learning activities with live teachers/facilitators. The teachers/facilitators can teach the modules while learning at the same time as they listen and practice what the video will teach. 

The project is one of the most needed solutions to usher hope to the disadvantaged youth group in the poor villages of Cambodia. Utilizing teacher facilitated video class system would ensure highly standardized curriculum implementation while concurrently empowering the local Khmer teachers to teach students with proficiency. The project can also cover more students in a shorter span of time as “video class guide” can be reproduced to as many copies needed targeting to reach even the most remote schools in the country. The video guide can be easily edited and modified to fit user needs as it progresses.

The solution shall be presented to the Ministry of Education of Cambodia to be piloted in a selected district level during the first year of implementation. In the second year, the solution shall be introduced to the whole province and to the whole country in the third year. The project shall empower public school teachers, religious centers and interested groups/individuals to become teachers/facilitators at a very affordable cost (maybe as low as $2/student/month). Learning English in Cambodia would cost currently from $10-$40/student/month.

English World team needs to raise $120,000 during the video creations (research stage) for the monthly allowance of 10 researchers, office space rental, utility expenses, administrative expenses, office expenses cost plus the acquisition cost of 5 desktop computers.

During the pilot stage, the team needs to raise another $200,000. The team shall add 2 additional staff as training coordinators and acquire 2 motorcycles. Videos and Master workbooks copy shall also be produced for the teachers/facilitators and students.

 The project can also gain a maximum of $40,000 revenue for the use of the video materials.

On the second year the team shall raise additional $200,000 for the operational cost and reproduction of videos/master workbooks but can also raise revenue around $1,000,000.

On the third year onward the project shall become self-sufficient and would venture further in partnering with open universities for distance learning program.

Raising startup capital to sustain the first 3 years of operation is the major factor limiting the ability of our solution to succeed.

Human need is the mother of all inventions. The need to usher Cambodian youth to become internationally competitive is needed so that they could be considered as a potent source for the work force of the future. Their deep desires to study and learn need to be given due course especially among the less privileged students in the poor and remote villages in the country. Khmer students need a break to learn English language using simple technology but yet still underutilized in the country so that they could be prepared to join the workforce of the millennium.
