UPSHIFT is designed for youth empowerment, building the capacity of youth to take an entrepreneurial approach to social change by adapting the hands-on, learn-while-doing elements of a business incubator. An important capacity building activity for UPSHIFT is the incubation phase where the qualified teams are eligible for a ‘seed fund’ to empower them to kick start their proposed activities and to help accelerate the transition from idea to reality. UPSHIFT is part of program “By Youth For Youth” which builds personal strength and professional readiness, empowering Vietnam’s most marginalized youth to identify, analyze issues, develop and lead projects to address these issues
The overall purpose of the project is engagement vulnerable youth in learning activities that help build their abilities through team work, critical thinking, entrepreneurial and job seeking skills by networking, interacting and engaging with ‘to be’ and already established young entrepreneurs.

UPSHIFT currently is supported by UNICEF - long term partners of the child protection programme, education programme and Ho Chi Minh City Programme Partnerships Office, including the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology (DoST) and CSO run social protection centres and organisations, such as Thao Dan Social Protection Organisation as well as vocational skills training schools, such as Nhan Dao Vocational School, will be mobilised to ensure that most vulnerable adolescents and young people get the necessary support and motivation to participate in and benefit from UPSHIFT.
Private sector and other partners may also be mobilised via VYE to support or donate venue space or supply sponsors, while media and communication partners may be mobilised to help tell the story of UPSHIFT in Viet Nam to the local business community.
The main challenge was the difficulties in contact the social protection centres and regional shelters.
These communities are closed and private, they don’t want to connect with media and other organization especially international organization. Social protection centres request government permission or introduction letter to approach.
Besides, the lack of acknowledgement and mindset about social standard of vulnarable/marginalized youth. Make it hard for them to understand the concept and going far in UPSHIFT. Many 14 – 24 year olds marginalized people just had elementary education level, and they didn’t even understand what is right or wrong in social standard

UPSHIFT targets adolescents girls and boys, focus young women aged 12 -24 from the most vulnerable communities in Vietnam, with a special emphasis on out of school youth, migrant youth, youth living in poverty, with reduced mobility, and other marginalized groups.
