Owning The Light
- Pre-Seed
OTL is an online video-selfie series profiling individuals working in the arts and creative sectors. We identify roles – such as lighting technicians and scriptwriters – and the individuals in them, bringing them to the fore while introducing the next generation to career options they may not be aware exist.
There is limited knowledge about arts and culture sector careers, and subsequently the people occupying them. This then leads to the continued perception that only a white male can be a sound engineer, scriptwriter, archivist and score composer. By showing an updated view of those participating in the creative economy, we aim to solve the lack of diverse representation, and thus encourage new entrants into the arts and/or creative sector.
- It is what I needed when I was considering my higher education and career options.
- It also integrates well with other education platforms, and formal education (secondary & tertiary): Whether it is school career days, career learning online platforms and career databases.
TOC: If young people, in the career consideration stage, are exposed to and consume the OTL videos, then there will be greater diverse participation in the creative economy.
It provides a space for arts and creative practitioners - via episodes published online - to take up their moment in the spotlight, while giving those individuals who want to do similar work an opportunity to get a better understanding of what the job is and what it takes to do it!
I'd like to see more women participating in the myriad of career options available - including those with large gender biases such as sound engineer, producer, cinematographer, etc.

The problem it aims to solve is unique/untapped. Alternatively, it hasn't been considered important enough until now.
People are at every layer of it: From the motivation (access to information and representation), to the methodology (video selfies), to the desired outcomes (participation).
