Heathy City Dhaka
Problem:
Traditional, unplanned and ineffective drainage systems of Dhaka city has created so many problems like frequent storm water flooding, water pollution, breakout of water borne and vector borne disease like Dengue, odouring, air pollution, soil pollution, financial loss and so on.
Solution :
Installation of equipment like improved and specialised mechanical conveyor belt system on the bed/floor of the drains to transport all the sewage/waste mechanically mainly to prevent drain blockages daily ,a dumping station and sewage treatment plants at the end point of this drainage system which will solve all the related problems.
Positive Changes :
1. No blockage inside the drains.
2. No/less waterlogging in the city due to rainfalls and drain blockages.
3. No/less mixing of sewage with surface water will lead no/less water pollution.
4. No/less breakout water borne diseases.
5.Saving the rivers beside Dhaka.
6.Scope of controlled treatment and recycling of municipal wastes.
7.Lessening the huge economic loss.
Ineffective drainage system is one of the major problems of Dhaka city.
Frequent storm water flooding leads to road damages, transportation hampering, industrial production hampering and so on and thus it becomes a cause of crore and crore TK loss every year.
Prothom Alo says,"If no step taken to control waterlogging in Dhaka city, it will cause 11000 crore TK loss by the year of 2050"
Prothom Alo also says that water, air, environment pollutions have caused financial loss of 42000 crore TK in the year of 2017.
Recently, immediately after waterlogging problem, Dengue has rapidly broken out over the Dhaka city.I think, clear water of the storm flood was the most suitable site for the reproduction and grow out of the vector of Dengue.
Moreover, DW report says that thousands of people die in the city due to pollution every year.
Rivers like Buriganga etc are being polluted in an uncontrollable way. Thus ecosystems and natural resources of Dhaka city are in the verge of destruction.
In fact,so many unknown problems related to drainage systems of the sewages and other wastes all together has made Dhaka as one of the worst cities in the world.
Since Dhaka is my capital city,I have to go Dhaka frequently. There I witness the sufferings of the people due to environmental pollution, traffic jam, waterlogging and so on.Then I feel proud of my village thinking about its fresh air, water, soil, plants, rivers etc.
I think, by managing the sewage of Dhaka city properly,my solution will address the needs of the dwellers of the city to a great extent.
To solve the problems stated above, the steps and measures of my solution are:
1.To install improved and specialised mechanical conveyor belt system on the bed/floor of municipal drains of all roads and streets of the urban area to prevent sedimentation, blockage of the drains which results in many problems like waterlogging, foul smells etc.
2.The conveyor belt system installed within the drains will work as like as the industries use conveyor belt system to transport their raw materials or other materials through the underground drain like pathways.
3.After activation, the belt will move forward and will lug forward both the liquid and solid portions of the sewage and will pass into the next drain and thus at last into the dumping station.
4.To prevent inertia of rest of the sewages on the belt at the moment activation, special structures to be used to lug forward the sewages.
5.The small and narrow road drains will pass their sewages into the nearest large road drains of large sizes by their conveyor belt systems.
6.Thus several large drains along with large the large roads will carry the total sewage of the city towards the dumping station.
7.These large drains will end into a suitable site suitably far from the city.
8.At this end point, there should have at least one complete dumping station having the facilities of waste treatment, separating the solid and the liquid portions of the wastes, sorting of the solid portion, recycling of these sorted solids, treatment plants for the waste water and some others.
9.So, the recycling industries should be sited near to it.
10.These conveyor belts of different drains may be activated keeping the best harmony among these at a certain periods of the day for certain hours recommended after proper experimental activities being performed.
11.To prevent heavy storm flooding in the city immediate and sufficient pumping equipment near the dumping site may be done.
12.To prevent irresponsible dumping of waste water without minimal treatment by the industries, the government can install industrial conveyor belt drains connected to all the industries which fall into a special dumping station can be named as industrial dumping station. Eventually, these industries have to treat these partial treated or untreated waste water in the final dumping station with their own expenses determined by the government on basis of the percentage of their waste production after performing effective surveys.
