Smart fitness and exercise technology for brain health
- Pre-Seed
There is scientific evidence that regular physical activity improves brain health and can prevent brain disorders, but physical ability to exercise and participation decline with age. Our smart MedExercise® system enables daily exercise training at the bedside and home to facilitate general and brain fitness in ageing population.
Regular physical exercise has been shown to enhance brain plasticity, increase brain blood flow and improve cognitive function, which is associated with reduced signs of depression and risk of dementia. While numerous health effects of exercise on brain function are known, person’s capacity to be sufficiently physically active is diminished due to ageing, extra weight and chronic diseases, including brain disorders. Exercise programs and self-managed training in aged persons and patients typically have very low participation. Our MedExercise® solution aims to scale up participation and consistency of exercise therapy to improve brain health.
The benefits of aerobic exercise for brain fitness, including psychological effects to reduce anxiety and improve mood, were demonstrated in numerous clinical and population studies. However, regular participation in exercise programs is low, particular in aged and clinical populations. The MedExercise® technology was scientifically developed to improve engagement in cardio training by using smart hardware at the patient’s bedside and home (Ref. 1, 2, 3 and 4). If implemented on a large scale, the users will have smart tool for daily training, regardless their physical ability and geographical location. It will facilitate regular exercise and improve brain health.
The health benefits MedExercise® system will be achieved by facilitating daily exercise training as preventive and therapeutic intervention in brain disorders. Inexpensive and compact MedExercise® hardware will be sold to users for application at the bedside and home. Integrating the hardware with digital content such as virtual reality and video games will provide motivation to exercise regularly, while its networkability will be used to control users’ activity by healthcare professionals at distance, if required. Large networks of connected devices can be managed by healthcare providers.

Cycling exercisers are the only fitness machines enabling cardio training it sitting users. The uniqueness of MedExercise® hardware is due to sliding pedals allowing the whole range of linear motion for each foot so that reproducing leg movements pertinent to natural walking. Smooth linear motion of pedals was the toughest challenge in the development of working prototypes, which was resolved by applying advanced materials and represents our IP. Wireless sensors in the pedals are tracking the user’s leg activity, making the hardware connectable to smart devices and networks to motivate users and control their activity at distance.
Therapeutic exercise such as cardio training was shown as an effective intervention in most chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and COPD. Unfortunately, the current clinic-based model of exercise therapy is unsustainable and remains vastly underutilized. Patient transportation and high costs up to $180 per session are considered as the main barriers. In contrast, our MedExercise® system facilitates delivery of therapeutic exercise at home. The system is based on unique MedExercise® hardware, which is connected training devices allowing personalization and online management of therapy, while reducing the number of trips to the clinic and costs.
Inexpensive ($200-300) and compact MedExercise® hardware will be affordable home-based solution for people, having difficulty to participate in conventional physical activities. They will be able to purchase or hire hardware, download associated apps and connect to the networks of users. Low cost online supervision by healthcare professionals will be available, if required.

MDXD is raising equity financing to produce and implement MedExercise® system.
The healthcare industry is the most regulated. Slow traction is expected for new technologies, which is a major limiting factor for implementation of MedExercise® system.

The MedExercise® system is human-centered technology aiming to solve, arguably, the biggest health problem of 21st century, which is global pandemic of physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle. The Solve Challenge can provide us with independent feedback on our technology and, if successful, will help to organize pilots, scaling and implementing this technology.
CAM Metal Products (NSW, Australia) is our current manufacturing partner, who also provides warehousing. The Balmain Hospital in Sydney assisted with clinical trials.
The MedExercise® is a new type of hardware, which has yet to have analogues of the market.
