The Autonomous Pancreas
- Pre-Seed
Our solution uses a continuous blood sugar monitor and treatment device to regulate blood sugar in insulin dependent diabetics. We aim for treatment to be affordable and prevent brain disorders that have been linked to diabetes through long term extreme glycemic conditions such as, Alzheimer's, stroke, brain aneurysms, and depression.
Our team aims to solve several brain disorders that insulin dependent diabetics have been shown to have an increased risk of obtaining due to mismanagement of blood glucose levels and the effects that long term exposure to extreme glycemic conditions have on the body. We plan to monitor and regulate blood sugar levels using a continuous C# void loop paired with a continuous glucose monitor and a bolus insulin pump. This will improve the regularity of the patients blood glucose and decrease their risk of brain disorders that have been linked to diabetes such as, aneurysms, depression, Alzheimer's, and stroke.
1.25 million U.S. individuals suffer from type 1 diabetes and an estimated 80,000 children around the globe are diagnosed each year. According to the http://www.mayoclinic.org/dise...diabetes cause issues that directly affect the brain. We designed a prototype device using acid and bases. Our device is functional and can neutralize solutions. We have graphs demonstrating the rate at which the solution was neutralized in three separate trials. This thus proves that our continuous loop solution has the potential to work and by having a device that controls glycemic conditions will prevent the associated brain related disorders with diabetes. http://www.mayoclinic.org/dise...

The closed-loop insulin delivery is an emerging technology that may transform management of type 1 diabetes. It delivers insulin in a continually glucose-responsive fashion to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia and to improve overall glucose control. Our solution will be deployed in kits that can be found at medical institutions. We hope to achieve much more with this device in the future, and further learn how new systems can transform the lives of the estimated 1.25 million U.S. individuals who suffer from type 1 diabetes and the estimated 80,000 children around the globe who are diagnosed each year.

Our solution is innovative in its use of an infinite c# void loop paired with a timer to account for the night time variable in blood sugar fluctuations. Other solutions in the diabetic field involve humans in the treatment process at every step. This includes testing, dosing, and correcting for high blood glucose. Our team's goal is to decrease stress and human error in diabetes treatment, so that risk for diabetes related brain illnesses can be prevented.
The struggles of managing type one diabetes includes: checking blood sugar on an average of four to eight times a day to manually injecting insulin via injections or utilizing a pump after every meal. If the dosage of insulin is wrong, one suffers from hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. If blood glucose is too high, additional insulin must be administered. During the course of a lifetime, diabetes management can affect quality of life. The stress of having low income can make diabetes treatment difficult. We hope to keep costs affordable with our DIY approach so diabetes management is virtually carefree for everyone.
The autonomous pancreas will be deployed as a treatment option for all diabetics, just like the pump and insulin injections are now. Our ultimate goal is to set up a company that can administer the device through hospitals and other medical institutions.

Our group members self fund this project from their joint individual incomes. As we move forward, we plan to further support ourselves with our own funds. As of now, we have constructed a basic prototype with a budget of about $200, as our model gets more advanced we will have to increase this cost, but we do not anticipate any dramatic increases. We entered this challenge not only to submit an innovative technological solution for improving treatment of diabetic brain related diseases, but also to attract sponsors who will work with us in order to make this a worldwide solution.
What we require to further develop our project, would be resources and more advanced technology. It proved to be quiet challenging to complete the basic protype and acquiring the open source chip. Another issue that we had was developing a compatible code for the chip and the device. We would also need much more expertise in the hardware area, while our group members specialize in structure, biological information, and nutrition. We have little hardware expertise and are slowed by learning it as we go.

The Solve community can give us the financial resources and the needed business partners to allow our solution to be globally available to offer a revolutionary solution that utilizes the latest technology that can be readily available and affordable for anyone. Solve also has partners with greater knowledge of computer programming and systems software which is a critical part of further development for our project. We created this project in hopes to offer a unique take on diabetes management that is a bright vision for the future.
We currently have no partners and are independently researching and funding our project. Our purpose is to develop, manfucature and sell our prodcut so that a consumer will spend money on a purchase to create a profit for ourselves and investors.
