RMS INNOVATIONS
The problem we're solving is that of accidental home shootings which take countless lives of innocent children every year. Our device is an external biometric trigger lock with integrated motion detection that is placed externally over the trigger guard. Our solution reduces a child's ability to get or discharge a firearm that may be unattended in a home environment.
From 2006-2016, nearly 6,885 people in the U.S. died from unintentional shootings. In 2016 alone, there were 495 incidents of accidental firearm deaths. Accidental gun deaths occur mainly in those under 25 years old. And in 2014, 2,549 children (age 0-19) died by gunshot and an additional 13,576 were injured. In the United States, over 1.69 million kids age 18 and under are living in households with loaded and unlocked firearms, setting the scene for possible tragedy if firearms are not locked and stored properly. Our solution would drastically reduce these numbers with an alternative to the traditional trigger lock. Our device will keep children out while still allowing access to the firearm in emergency situations.
The population we are serving is gun owners with children who tend to leave a firearm unlocked and unguarded in their home for emergency situations. Whether that child is very young or well into their teens not all children grow up being taught the proper way to handle or use a firearm. And with children being as curious as they are that can pose a potential threat to their safety in the confines of their own home. We have been working closely with families who believe that there should be a quick and easy way to keep firearms out in their home, yet safe for their family members and none of the current alternatives are truly build for the 21st century. Our solution fixes that by being quick, safe, and easy to use. While having features made for the 21st century such as biometric and motions detection.
Our solution is a biometric trigger lock that can register up to 5 users fingerprints through our app. The device also uses accelerometers and a gyroscope to sense any type of movement on the device to send you a notification where ever you may be. And unlike traditional gun locks which only have one rod the goes in-front of the trigger, our device has dual rods which go in-front and behind the trigger to prevent any kind of forceful disgorge. The device is also spring loaded and will eject in less than half a second after reading the proper fingerprint.
- Promote physical safety by decreasing violence or transportation accidents
- Prototype
- New application of an existing technology
Unlike anything else currently on the market this device has a small form factor, dual rod accidental discharge protection, motion detection with notifications, and a biometric fingerprint sensor.
The main technology that defines this product would be the biometric sensor that is used to unlock the device as well as the accelerometer, gyroscope, and wifi module that is used to send notifications to the user regardless of where they might be in the world.

I believe this solution address the problem of accidental shootings and I came to that realization through research and interviews I've had with gun owners themselves. After several demos, news articles and many interviews I've learned this device is something that most gun owners with children want in order to make sure their family stays safe in all situations.

Our goal within the next year would be to finish all the final touches on the device mainly safety & durability testing to ensure the device is a 100% secure and stable especially with it being a gun safety product and within the next 5 years I see this device sold in retail stores nationwide.
The main barriers keeping me from accomplishing our goals is funding and navigating channels in the gun community. I was able to build out a functioning prototype out of pocket. Although to manufacture the entire device in a finished go to market form is a bit out of reach with the current method of funding the project.
I am planning to overcome the barrier. Though applying for grants and investment which I'm currently in the process of doing.

My team and I would utilize the prize to finish our design and manufacturing process to help shorten our time frame and go to market as soon as possible. The funds would also help us get through all the testing and approvals we would need to secure the gun safety product.
