Malizataka
The site of uncollected garbage is common in Kibera slums, and as a resident of Kibera I hate the site of it. These uncollected garbage form the breeding grounds for infectious deseases like cholera, diarrhea, bilharzia among others.
We have come up with malizataka. Malizataka is an sms based garbage collection and management application. The application contains the mapping of garbage collectors and their location. Users dial up a code that we provide to report garbage, the data sent will contain precise GPS location for the garbage reported.
The report is then broadcast-ed to the nearest garbage collectors who will go collect the garbage and take a photo or video proof that we will then use to pay them and award then points
We will charge for every garbage reported. This is what we are going to use to pay the garbage collectors and also sustain our project
The site of uncollected garbage is common in Kibera slums. According to research published by PLOS|ONE(Mortality Trends Observed in Population-Based Surveillance of an Urban Slum Settlement, Kibera, Kenya, 2007–2010), close to 1000 people die of diarrhea, cholera and hygiene related diseases annually. These number have greatly increased. Most garbage collectors are unequipped to collect garbage and manage waste past their communities. Lack of information on where garbage is and lack of resources to reach and collect the garbage is a challenge. The society also looks down on people who undertake garbage collection as a career neglecting the fact of how important that activity helps the community
We are serving the Kibera population. We are mainly engaging youth around Kibera. We are making garbage collection a collective responsibility. Any member of the community has a responsibility to help up track, report and locate uncollected garbage. We have made this easier using our application which available to any cellphone user. They just have to dial a code that sends GPS timestamp of the location from which the code was dialed. We then train, mentor and provide necessary equipped to the relevant youth groups at a subsidized fee. We charge a small fee for dialing a the garbage reporting code. This will ensure clean environment contributed to memebers of the society
Cellphone driven garbage reporting app. Users report uncollected garbage whenever they spot one by dialing a code that is connected to our servers. the code sends a precise GPS coordinates of the location form which the user sent the code. We then use the coordinate to inform the youth groups that partner with us and give rent them our garbage collection equipment s. The information is also available to all garbage collectors. Whoever collects the garbage provides photo or video proof and that is used to add points to them which then raises they chances of being notified and awarded of garbage collection tenders. We charge a small fee for the reporting of which is charged automatically by the service provider in form of airtime. We use this to sustain our program
- Prevent infectious disease outbreaks and vector-borne illnesses
- Reduce the incidence of NCDs from air pollution, lack of exercise, or unhealthy food
- Prototype
- New application of an existing technology
There has not been any application of SMS and automation in solving the garbage problem in Kibera. We are created an "Uber-like" system in the garbage collection industry
We are using short messaging technology, internet and automation. These are well proven technology.
- Indigenous Knowledge
Users use SMS to send instant information about garbage around their location. These users pay for these services. Garbage collectors use this information to collect garbage as a source of employment, earn revenue and improve their standards of living. The environment becomes clean and free from hazards that could cause diseases

A currently serving about 100 people. Am planning to serve up to 1000 people next year. Am planning to serve up to 500000 people in the next five years. This includes youths, women, elders and people living in urban areas
Our goal in the next five is to expand our services to at least three East African countries, serve up to 500000 people.
We are also planning to scale to accommodate more youths for training on employment and entrepreneurship opportunity. Transform them form job seekers to job creator
Messaging service is currently a bit expensive. We lack enough resources to reach more youths and to expand our garbage collection services beyond Kibera.
By partnering with Service providers we will be able to lower the cost of sending SMS, We are also looking for investors and partners for financial assistance to enable us acquire more resources and reach more youths in and beyond Kibera
