Sustainably Sourced Fish Feed Combats Overfishing

NovFeed is a 2021 Solver, whose proprietary technology replaces traditional fish and soybean fish feed formulations with a protein-based feed developed from organic waste; this results in land, water, and energy savings. They were initially awarded the Minderoo Prize to End Global Overfishing, worth 25 thousand dollars, at Solve Challenge Finals in September 2021. At Solve at MIT in May 2022, they were awarded a further 50 thousand dollars in follow-on funding. The funding has been transformational for NovFeed: the team said that without the funding supplied from Solve’s partners, they would not have been able to move out of the university lab where they were originally working, set up their own lab, buy necessary equipment, and accordingly scale up production of their product.
